Overview

The Kenmore HEPA 220 Air Cleaning System, model 437.83236, is designed to purify the air within homes by removing various airborne pollutants. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air, indicating its capability to remove 99.97% of particulates 0.3 microns or larger in size. This system is particularly effective in enclosed spaces with doors and windows closed, providing cleaner, healthier air free of smoke particles, dust, pollen, and other pollutants. The manufacturer recommends continuous operation, 24 hours a day, for optimal air purification.

The air cleaner operates using a three-stage filtering system. The first stage involves a replaceable charcoal pre-filter (Model #83134), which helps to remove unpleasant odors and harmful gases from the air. Following this, the air passes through a replaceable ultra high-efficiency HEPA filter (Model #83139). This filter is crucial for removing pollen and most other airborne particulates that can affect individuals with allergies and respiratory problems, capturing particles as small as 0.3 microns. The final stage incorporates an electronic IONIZER. Before the air exits the cleaner, the IONIZER places a negative charge on any remaining airborne particles. This negative charge facilitates easier trapping of these particulates when they re-circulate through the system, and it also enhances the "freshness" of the indoor air. An ON/OFF switch is provided for the ionizer, allowing users to operate the air cleaner with or without this feature. If the air cleaner is placed too close to a wall or in a highly polluted area, a sediment of trapped ionized pollutants might build up on adjacent objects.

The device features a 360° air intake grille, drawing dirty air from all directions. After filtration, the purified air is dispersed upwards into the surrounding atmosphere through the air outlet. For ease of relocation, the unit is equipped with a convenient carrying handle. The control panel includes a power control switch with an indicator light, offering three speed selections: III (super) for maximum operation and fast initial cleaning, II (high) for daytime operation with a fast fan speed, and I (low) for quieter night-time operation. Additionally, there are two filter change date calendars on the control panel, serving as reminders for when to replace the pre-filter and the HEPA filter. The ionizer control switch also has an indicator light that glows when the ionizer is active. A locking mechanism on the bottom secures the base assembly.

Technical specifications for the Kenmore HEPA 220 include a diameter of 15.4 inches (38.5 cm), a height of 17.3 inches (43.3 cm), and a weight of 17 lbs. (7.7 kgs.). It operates on 120 Volts AC, 60 Hz, with an ionization voltage of 7500 Volts DC.

For initial setup, users should visually inspect the unit for any damage and remove all packaging materials. Upon first use, the pre-filter change date calendar should be set three months ahead, and the HEPA change date calendar two years ahead, to indicate future replacement times. The air cleaner should be plugged into a polarized 120 Volt AC wall outlet. It is crucial not to place the air cleaner within 3 feet of any computer or magnetically sensitive devices like floppy disks or tapes. The unit should never be operated without the HEPA filter properly installed, as this could lead to permanent motor damage.

Maintenance involves regular cleaning and filter replacement. Before any cleaning, the air cleaner must be turned OFF and unplugged. The external surfaces, especially the air intake grilles and air outlet, should be cleaned with a moistened soft cloth only; no abrasive cleaners or water should be poured or splashed onto the unit. The filter cartridge itself is not washable and should not be cleaned.

The charcoal pre-filter (Model #83134) should be changed every three months or sooner, depending on the level of air contaminants and frequency of use. The HEPA filter (Model #83139) has a usable lifetime of 1 to 3 years, also depending on air contaminant levels and usage frequency. A noticeable decrease in air volume output indicates that the HEPA filter needs replacement. It is advisable to have a spare filter available.

To replace filters, first turn off and unplug the unit. Gently place the air cleaner on its side and unscrew the locking mechanism. Remove the base assembly from the air cleaner. For pre-filter replacement, remove the filter assembly from the power head, detach the strap fastener, remove and discard the old pre-filter. Remove any plastic wrapping from the new pre-filter, wrap it around the HEPA filter, and secure it with the strap fastener. For HEPA filter replacement, follow the same initial steps, then remove and discard the used HEPA filter assembly. Unwrap the new HEPA filter, replace the pre-filter around it, and secure it. The HEPA filter assembly is designed to fit into the power head without any specific orientation. After placing the filter assembly into the power head, install the base and securely tighten the locking mechanism. Finally, adjust the filter change calendar(s) and turn the air cleaner upright for operation.

If storing the Kenmore HEPA Air Cleaning System for more than 30 days, it is recommended to remove both the primary HEPA filter and charcoal pre-filter. Discard the pre-filter and wrap the HEPA filter in an airtight plastic bag or wrap to ensure it is totally sealed. To restore service, unwrap the HEPA filter, install a new activated carbon pre-filter, and replace both filters in the air cleaner.

Sears provides a full one-year warranty covering defects in material or workmanship, offering repair or replacement free of charge. This warranty is valid in the United States or Canada and does not cover replacement HEPA filters or pre-filters.
