Overview

The SEC America 700HS Series DC-DC Converters are fully isolated power conversion units designed to deliver up to 850 Watts in demanding environments, including extreme ambient temperatures and adverse operating conditions. These converters are built for robust performance and reliability in various applications.

Function Description

The primary function of the 700HS Series is to convert a DC input voltage to a regulated DC output voltage. These units are designed to provide a stable and adjustable output, making them suitable for systems requiring precise power delivery. They incorporate several protective features to ensure safe and continuous operation, including electronic current limiting, thermal protection, and input voltage cutouts. The converters are also designed for high efficiency, minimizing power loss during conversion.

Usage Features

The 700HS Series converters offer a range of features that enhance their usability and adaptability:

  • Wide Range Input Voltage: The converters can operate effectively across a broad spectrum of input voltages, providing flexibility in power source selection.
  • Adjustable Output Voltage: Users can trim the output voltage to meet specific application requirements. This adjustment is performed internally via a potentiometer (P1) after gaining access to the internal components.
  • Remote Sense Regulation: To maintain accurate voltage at the load, especially when dealing with long output cables or high currents, the converters include remote sense terminals. This feature compensates for voltage drops in the cabling, ensuring that the voltage at the point of load remains stable and within specifications. Users are advised to run two separate twisted wires from the desired regulation points to the remote sense terminals. Even with low load currents, connecting the positive and negative output terminals to their respective sense terminals is recommended for optimal regulation.
  • Remote Turn On/Off Switching: The units can be configured for remote activation. By default, they are set to turn on automatically when source power is applied. However, users can enable a remote turn-on function by adjusting an internal jumper. In this mode, the converter will energize when a specific pin (pin H) is connected to the negative input line (pin F). This feature allows for external control over the converter's operation, which can be useful in integrated systems.
  • High Ingress Rating (IP 676): The gasket-sealed design provides a high level of protection against dust and water ingress, making these converters suitable for harsh environments where exposure to elements is a concern.
  • Low No-Load Power Consumption: The converters are designed to be energy-efficient, even when no load is connected, which helps reduce overall power consumption in standby modes.
  • I/O Bayonet Quick Connection: The input/output connector is a 9-pin bayonet type, facilitating quick and secure connections. This type of connector is robust and designed for reliable performance in demanding applications.
  • Mounting: The converters are designed for mounting on flat metal surfaces. Optimal heat transfer is achieved when a thermal transfer compound is used between the converter base and the mounting surface. The mounting flanges include slots that can accommodate hardware up to 1½ inches in diameter, providing secure installation.

Maintenance Features

The 700HS Series converters are designed with maintainability in mind, although internal adjustments require careful access:

  • Internal Accessibility for Adjustments: While the units are gasket-sealed for environmental protection, internal adjustments such as output voltage trimming and remote turn-on configuration are possible. Access is gained by removing four corner screws that secure the front connector plate. This allows the front plate to be raised, revealing the internal components for adjustment.
  • Fuse Replacement: The converters incorporate internal fuses (F1,2,3) for protection. In the event of a fuse opening, users can replace them internally. It is crucial to ensure that the power is disconnected before attempting fuse replacement and that the cause of the failure has been addressed. Only fuses of identical ratings should be used for replacement. Users are strongly cautioned against applying reversed polarity input, as this can cause permanent damage.
  • Durable Construction: The housing is made of aluminum, contributing to the unit's durability and heat dissipation capabilities.
  • Self-Resetting Protection Mechanisms: The converters feature overload shutdown and over-temperature shutdown mechanisms that are designed to be self-resetting. In the event of an overload, the unit will shut off and automatically attempt to retry operation. Similarly, if the internal thermostat detects an over-temperature condition, the unit will self-reset once conditions return to normal. This reduces the need for manual intervention in response to transient fault conditions.
  • Conduction and Convection Cooling: The design utilizes both conduction through the base plate and convection cooling, ensuring efficient heat dissipation and contributing to the longevity of the unit, even in environments where airflow might be restricted.

Overall, the SEC America 700HS Series DC-DC Converters are robust, versatile, and protected power conversion solutions suitable for a wide range of industrial and mobile applications where reliable and regulated DC power is essential.
