Product Overview
The PC-TB12N-W is a complete, self-contained, battery-operated people counter with an integral WiFi-enabled 802.11b data transmitter. This system consists of a photoelectric IR beam transmitter and receiver, which can operate up to 30 ft apart in front- or side-firing modes. The
counter will increment as the invisible IR beam is broken, regardless of the direction of traffic. The selectable group-counting feature counts groups of people as one unit, instead of counting individuals. The receiver has an integrated six-digit LCD counter for stand-alone use. This counter provides an easily installed, comprehesive network solution for local and/or central data collection.

Overview

The PC-TB12N-W is a wireless infrared (IR) beam-based people counter designed for various traffic monitoring applications. It consists of two main units: an RX (Receiver) unit and a TX (Transmitter) unit. The RX unit is distinguished by its LCD display, which shows current counts and configuration information.

Function Description:

The primary function of the PC-TB12N-W is to count people or objects passing through an infrared beam. When the IR beam between the RX and TX units is broken, the counter increments. The device can operate in two main configurations:

  • Stand-Alone Mode: In this mode, the RX unit's LCD displays the current count for two seconds when the beam is broken. The total count can also be viewed by activating the Service button. The counter can be reset, and the battery meter can be reset after battery replacement.
  • Sensor Server Mode: For more advanced data collection and analysis, the PC-TB12N-W can connect to a Sensor Server via Wi-Fi. In this setup, the sensors transmit data (counts, battery status, etc.) to the server, which then stores and processes the information. This mode allows for remote monitoring and detailed traffic analytics.

The device supports both "Front-Firing" and "Side-Firing" configurations, determining how the IR beam is oriented relative to the entry/exit point. Front-firing involves the RX and TX units facing each other across an opening, while side-firing involves them mounted on a doorframe or similar structure, with the beam running parallel to the opening.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Wireless Communication: The sensors utilize Wi-Fi (802.11 network) for communication, particularly when connected to a Sensor Server. This includes configurable SSID, channel, and authentication types (None, WEP-128, WPA2-PSK).
  • Power Modes: The device offers two power modes for the TX unit, affecting the maximum separation distance and battery life:
    • High Power: Allows separation up to 40 feet, with an approximate battery life of 1.2 years.
    • Low Power: Allows separation up to 12 feet, with an approximate battery life of 1.7 years.
  • Connectivity: Each unit includes a USB port for configuration and a Service button for activating various functions.
  • Mounting: The units are designed for surface mounting using back-plates. The back-plates attach to the desired surface, and the sensor units then snap onto the back-plates.
  • Counting Range: The sensors should be mounted 3-4 feet off the ground for general traffic counting or 4-5 feet off the ground for adult-only traffic.
  • Data Transmission: When connected to a Sensor Server, data is transmitted via UDP packets to a configurable IP address/hostname and port (default 6767).
  • Group Timeout: A configurable setting (in seconds) that allows for counting groups of people as a single unit by introducing a delay before the counter resets for the next count.

Usage Features:

  • Easy Configuration: The PC-TB12N-W is configured using the "WiFi Sensor Utility" software on a PC. Users connect the RX or TX unit via USB, activate the Service button to enter "CONFIG" mode, and then use the software to adjust settings.
  • Network Settings: Configurable IP address (dynamic or static), subnet mask, gateway, DNS, WLAN SSID, channel, and authentication type for Sensor Server integration.
  • Sensor Settings: Adjustable transmit period (affecting battery life), direction (Front-Firing or Side-Firing), power mode (High or Low for TX unit), and group timeout.
  • Status Monitoring: The RX unit's LCD display provides real-time count information. When connected to the utility, the Status tab allows verification of network connection, IP settings, and estimated battery life.
  • Troubleshooting Tools: The "Tools" tab in the utility provides ping functionality to test network connectivity and latency from both the sensor and the PC.
  • Visual Indicators: An indicator LED on each unit provides feedback on operation and service signals. The TX unit's programmed mode (Front-Firing/Side-Firing, High/Low power) is indicated by the number of LED flashes (1 to 4 flashes).
  • Mounting Flexibility: Supports both door/frame mount (Side-Firing) and opposing wall mount (Front-Firing) configurations.
  • Service Button Functions: The Service button on the RX unit allows for viewing current counts, clearing the LCD counter, and resetting the battery meter in stand-alone mode. It also sends a service signal to the Sensor Server.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The units are battery-powered, and the battery meter can be reset after battery replacement to ensure accurate monitoring of battery life.
  • Software Updates: The "Update" button in the configuration utility saves changes to the sensor, while the "Save" icon saves settings to the computer.
  • Firmware Compatibility: If used with an existing Sensor Server, the server's firmware must be version 2.6a or later to ensure compatibility with the PC-TB12N-W.
  • Cleaning: The device should be cleaned with a soft, wet cloth and mild soap or detergent. Harsh cleaners like paint remover or benzene should be avoided as they can damage the surface and lenses.
  • Tampering Warning: Any unauthorized changes or modifications to the device will void the warranty.
  • Environmental Considerations: Direct sunlight or automobile headlights can cause false counts, and heavy impact or shock can damage the hardware. The mounting surface should be sturdy to prevent misalignment.
