7. Wetting the Auger

When the going gets tough in heavy soil, spray some water onto the auger and into the hole.

• In clay, this makes the drilling process easier by allowing the lubricated soil ribbons to travel up the

auger flight and out of the hole.

• In sand, early use of water serves to maintain the integrity of the hole being augered and stops the

hole wall collapse.
