The Sentry BPRV (Back Pressure Regulator/Relief Valve) is a pressure conditioning device designed to maintain a constant pressure at the analyzer inlet, independent of source pressure fluctuations or sample flow changes. It also functions as a relief valve in the event of an over-pressure condition.
When installed in a system, the Sentry BPRV holds a constant pressure of approximately 20 psig (1.4 barg) at the analyzer inlet. If the inlet pressure rises, the regulator opens to allow excess flow to pass through to a drain. This excess flow is typically used as a grab sample. The device's ability to control pressure between 20 psig (1.4 barg) and atmosphere allows for very precise pressure control, minimizes plugging, and ensures reliability. In normal operation, there should always be a flow from the exhaust port. This flow will increase with rising source pressures and decrease with falling source pressures, unless the Sentry VREL® valve is reset to maintain the total line flow at the set point. The BPRV also acts as a fail-safe relief valve, with a relieving capacity that exceeds that of most commonly used 1/4" relief valves. Since the BPRV is continuously in service, any malfunction is immediately evident, unlike a relief valve that can freeze without outward indication until it fails in an emergency.
Basic maintenance primarily involves cleaning and/or replacement of the diaphragm. The manual provides detailed instructions for disassembly and reassembly.
