3. Key concepts and terminology
Dust Size
is the diameter of a dust
particle which is
measured in microns
(µm) which is the same
as a micrometre.
PM
2.5
is particulate matter less
than 2.5 microns in
diameter such as
combustion particles.
Also called fine particles
which are hazardous to
human health.
PM

is particulate matter
less than 10 microns
in diameter such as
dust, pollen, and
mold.
Dust Density
(or Dust Concentration)
is measured in units of
mass / volume such as

or mg/m

.
Output Voltage
Sharp dust sensors
generally output a
voltage which increases
with dust density.
Sensitivity
is the change in output
voltage when the dust
density changes by

.
