Overview

The D4648 Cabinet Maker's Front Vise is a woodworking tool designed to be mounted on a workbench to provide clamping capabilities for various projects. It features a robust construction with a solid hardwood clamping jaw pad, ensuring secure gripping of workpieces.

Function Description:

The primary function of the D4648 Front Vise is to securely hold workpieces during woodworking operations such as sawing, planing, sanding, or carving. It operates by rotating a handle, which moves a movable jaw either toward or away from a fixed jaw. Rotating the handle clockwise brings the movable jaw closer to the fixed jaw, clamping the workpiece. Conversely, rotating the handle counterclockwise moves the movable jaw away, releasing the workpiece. This mechanism allows for quick and efficient clamping and release of materials. The vise is designed to be mounted on workbenches that are 1½" thick, providing a stable and integrated clamping solution for a woodworking setup. A notable feature is the inclusion of bench dog holes on the top of the vise jaw, which are designed to align with existing bench dog holes on the workbench. This allows for the use of bench dogs in conjunction with the vise, expanding its versatility for holding irregularly shaped or larger workpieces.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: D4648
  • Jaw Width: 13"
  • Workbench Thickness Compatibility: 1½"
  • Maximum Jaw Opening: 5⅞"
  • Weight: 13 lbs.
  • Mounting: Requires (4) #10 x 1½" wood screws (not provided) for attachment to the underside of the workbench.
  • Components: The vise assembly includes a vise handle assembly, a vise set assembly, a wooden vise face (birch), and wood screws (#8 x 1, likely for internal assembly, not mounting).

Usage Features:

  • Easy Installation: The vise comes fully assembled, simplifying the installation process. Users need to position the vise on the workbench, mark the six mounting holes, drill 1/8" pilot holes approximately 1" deep, and then secure the vise with wood screws.
  • Bench Dog Compatibility: The vise's jaw includes bench dog holes that can align with existing bench dog holes on a workbench. This feature enhances the vise's ability to hold various shapes and sizes of wood, especially when used with bench dogs.
  • Secure Clamping: The robust design and hardwood jaw pad ensure a firm grip on workpieces, preventing movement during work.
  • Smooth Operation: The vise is designed for smooth and controlled movement of the movable jaw, allowing for precise clamping adjustments.
  • Versatile Application: Suitable for a wide range of woodworking tasks, from holding small pieces for detailed work to larger boards for planing or sanding.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning Painted Parts: The painted surfaces of the vise can be easily cleaned with a damp rag to remove dust and grime.
  • Pitch Removal: For accumulated wood pitch on components, a pitch-dissolver or blade and bit cleaner is recommended for effective cleaning. This is crucial for maintaining smooth operation and preventing buildup that could impede the vise's function.
  • Leadscrew Lubrication: The leadscrew, which is responsible for moving the jaw, should be lubricated with a dry lubricant such as silicone or graphite. This type of lubricant is preferred because it will not attract sawdust, which could otherwise clog the threads and hinder operation. Regular lubrication ensures the leadscrew operates smoothly and extends its lifespan.
  • Thread Cleaning: If material builds up on the threads of the leadscrew, a thorough cleaning with a pitch-dissolver is advised to restore optimal performance. This prevents binding and ensures the vise can be opened and closed with ease.

The D4648 Cabinet Maker's Front Vise is a practical and durable tool designed to enhance the functionality of a woodworking workbench, offering reliable clamping and ease of use for various projects.
