Why does my Shopsmith 555970 motor overheat?
    • J
      Janet WolfeAug 14, 2025
If the Shopsmith Wood Router motor overheats, it could be due to several reasons. First, ensure there's an 1/8" clearance between the bottom of the router motor and the deflector by loosening the motor and raising it. Second, you might be overworking the motor, in which case you should stop and allow it to cool. Third, check if you are taking too heavy a cut and reduce the depth-of-cut. Finally, you might be feeding stock too rapidly, so slow down your feed rate.

How to improve cut quality on Shopsmith 555970?
    • W
      Wendy ClarkAug 17, 2025
If your Shopsmith Wood Router is producing poor quality cuts, try the following: reduce the depth-of-cut on each pass, feed the workpiece into the bit at a slower rate, sharpen or replace the bit, and ensure you tighten the overarm on the MARK V Way Tubes, Gibs, or Router Motor Clamp.

What to do if depth-of-cut changes while using Shopsmith 555970 Wood Router?
    • B
      Brandon PaceAug 20, 2025
If the depth-of-cut changes while using your Shopsmith Wood Router, it could be that the bit is loose in the router motor. Make sure to tighten the bit. Alternatively, the router motor might be loose in the Motor Clamp. If so, tighten the clamp by tightening the nuts.

      Andrea YorkAug 25, 2025
If your workpiece is “burning” while using the Shopsmith Wood Router, you should sharpen or replace the bit. You can also slow down your variable speed Router Motor or purchase an electronic motor speed control for single-speed Routers.

      jonesrobertAug 30, 2025

Why won’t the Depth Control Handle hold position on my Shopsmith 555970?
    • C
      Christopher AdamsSep 3, 2025
If the Depth Control Handle on your Shopsmith Wood Router won’t hold its position when tightened, it could be due to a loose nut on the left side of the Clutch Shaft. Tighten the nut. Another cause may be a poor seating surface on the Control Handle. Unscrew the Depth Control Handle from the Clutch Hub and examine the seating surface at the end of the Handle shaft. If the surface is rounded, file a new, FLAT seating surface on the end of the Handle shaft.

What to do if Depth Control casting won’t release on Shopsmith 555970 Wood Router?
    • G
      Grant ChanSep 6, 2025
If the Depth Control casting won’t release on your Shopsmith Wood Router, it may be because the Ball Plunger is screwed in too far or is defective. Unscrew the Ball Plunger in quarter-turn increments until the casting releases from and engages the groove in the Depth Control casting shaft. If it is defective, replace the Ball Plunger.

Why does the Dovetail Slide stick on my Shopsmith Wood Router?
    • A
      Amanda MackSep 10, 2025
If the Dovetail Slide sticks or grabs on your Shopsmith Wood Router, it is likely that the brass gib is adjusted too tightly. Loosen the gib adjustment setscrews.
