When using the microphone with a balanced input, pins 2 and 3
are the audio signal carriers. When using the microphone with an
unbalanced input, use a cable wired with pin 2 as the signal carrier
and pin 3 connected to the cable shield (ground), such as the
Shure C20HZ high-impedance cable.
IMPEDANCE SELECTION
The microphone is shipped connected for low impedance oper-
ation. To change to high impedance, proceed as follows (refer to
Figure 1):
1. Remove plug element at receptacle end of microphone by
turning slotted setscrew in (counterclockwise) and carefully
withdrawing plug element from case.
2. Disconnect 2-terminal impedance selection socket from rear
of plug element.
3. Reconnect 2-terminal impedance selection socket in reverse
position so that pin 3 of plug element is inserted in socket ter-
minal “H” (White).
4. Reassemble plug element into microphone and seal setscrew
securely by turning out (clockwise).

POLARITY
All cables and microphones should be tested to ensure that they
have the same polarity. To test two microphones and/or their ca-
bles for proper polarity, connect them to an amplifier and talk or
sing into them while holding them three or four inches apart. The
sound from the speakers should be the same when talking into ei-
ther microphone or directly between them. If the sound drops dras-
tically, or if a dead spot is found when talking between the two
microphones, either the microphones or their cables have opposite
polarity.
To change the polarity of a microphone cable, either use a
Shure A15PRS phase reverser or interchange the wires connected
to pins 2 and 3 of the three-pin connector at one end of the cable.
To change the polarity of a microphone, the microphone cartridge
leads must be interchanged. This should be performed by your
dealer, the Shure Factory Service Department, or other qualified
service personnel.

Overview

The SHURE Model 565SD is a dual-impedance, unidirectional dynamic microphone, part of the UNISPHERE I 565 Series. It is designed for excellent vocal or speech reproduction, making it a popular choice for use on lecterns and stages in public auditoriums, churches, convention halls, and schools.

Function Description:

The microphone operates as a dynamic transducer, converting sound waves into electrical signals. Its unidirectional (cardioid) polar pattern ensures uniform sensitivity to sound from the front while rejecting sound from the sides and rear, which helps to minimize feedback and unwanted ambient noise. The dual-impedance capability allows the microphone to be connected to a wide range of audio inputs, from low-impedance (19 to 300 ohms) to high-impedance inputs. It features a strong, wire-mesh, spherical front grille that incorporates a highly effective wind and "pop" filter, enhancing sound clarity by reducing plosive sounds and wind noise.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Type: Dynamic
  • Frequency Response: 50 to 15,000 Hz
  • Polar Pattern: Cardioid (unidirectional), uniform with frequency, symmetrical about axis. The polar response graphs illustrate consistent rejection across various frequencies (125 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 400 Hz, 8000 Hz).
  • Impedance: Dual. Microphone rating impedance is 150 ohms (250 ohms actual) for low-impedance connection and "High" for high-impedance microphone inputs. Shipped wired for low impedance.
  • Output Level (at 1,000 Hz):
    • Low Impedance ("L"): -56.0 dB (1.6 mV)
    • High Impedance ("H"): -34.0 dB (20 mV)
    • (0 dB = 1 volt per Pascal (1 Pa = 94 dB SPL))
  • Polarity: Positive pressure on the diaphragm produces positive voltage on pin 2 (with respect to pin 3).
  • Cartridge Shock Mount: Internal rubber vibration-isolator.
  • Case: Chrome-plated die casting with steel mesh grille.
  • Dimensions: 161 mm (6 7/16 in.) long, 51 mm (2 in.) maximum diameter, 34 mm (1 11/32 in.) body diameter, 22 mm (7/8 in.) at the base, 93 mm (3 11/16 in.) from the base to the grille.
  • Net Weight (less cable): 298 grams (10.5 oz).
  • Certifications: Eligible to bear CE Marking. Conforms to European EMC Directive 89/336/EEC. Meets applicable tests and performance criteria in European Standard EN55103 (1996) parts 1 and 2, for residential (E1) and light industrial (E2) environments.

Usage Features:

  • Selectable Dual Impedance Operation: The microphone is shipped connected for low-impedance operation. Users can change to high impedance by following a simple procedure:
    1. Remove the plug element from the microphone's receptacle end by turning the slotted setscrew counterclockwise and carefully withdrawing the element.
    2. Disconnect the 2-terminal impedance selection socket from the rear of the plug element.
    3. Reconnect the 2-terminal impedance selection socket in the reverse position, ensuring that pin 3 of the plug element is inserted into socket terminal "H" (White).
    4. Reassemble the plug element into the microphone and seal the setscrew securely by turning it clockwise.
  • Silent Magnetic Reed On/Off Switch: The microphone includes a built-in magnetic reed on/off switch with a lockplate. This allows for silent operation when turning the microphone on or off.
  • Lock-on Option for Switch: To lock the switch in the ON position, the user can remove a screw on the lockplate, turn the lockplate 180°, and then reassemble and tighten the screw.
  • Cable Options:
    • Model 565SD-CN: Supplied with a 6.1 m (20 ft) XLR cable. This cable is a two-conductor shielded, rubber-jacketed, detachable cable with XLR connectors.
    • Model 565SD-LC: Supplied without a cable.
  • Connections: When using with a balanced input, pins 2 and 3 carry the audio signal. For an unbalanced input, pin 2 is the signal carrier, and pin 3 is connected to the cable shield (ground).
  • Swivel Adapter: A furnished A25D swivel adapter provides positive action, adjustable through 90° from vertical to horizontal. This permits easy removal for handheld use and is suitable for mounting on a stand with a 5/8"-27 thread.

Maintenance Features:

  • Polarity Testing: All cables and microphones should be tested for proper polarity. This can be done by connecting two microphones to an amplifier and speaking/singing into them while holding them a few inches apart. Consistent sound from the speakers indicates correct polarity. A drop in sound or a "dead spot" suggests opposite polarity.
  • Polarity Correction:
    • Microphone Cable: Polarity can be changed by using a Shure A15PRS phase reverser or by interchanging the wires connected to pins 2 and 3 of the three-pin connector at one end of the cable.
    • Microphone: To change the polarity of the microphone itself, the microphone cartridge leads must be interchanged. This procedure should be performed by a dealer, the Shure Factory Service Department, or other qualified service personnel.
