Cleaning Instructions
External Cleaning
1. Use the 553-640 Vacuum Cleaner to vacuum the exterior perimeter of the detector.
2. If needed, use Solution 2000 All-Purpose Cleaner (Part No. 553-636) and the 553-638 Lint-Free Cloth to clean
the detector cover.
Note: Steps 1 and 2 are sufficient for an intitial cleaning of the detector.
Internal Cleaning
3. (See Figurel) Using a screwdriver or similar tool to press down on each tab as shown, unlatch the three outer
cover tabs and then pull off the cover.
4. (See Figure 2) Free the LED side of the smoke chamber cover by pushing the cover in the direction of the arrow
until it unlatches.
5. Turn the detector 180”. Then repeat Step 4 to unlatch the cover’s photo-diode side.
6. Using appropriate materials (553-641 Pressurized Air and 553-431 Detector Cleaning Kit), clean the inside of the
smoke chamber and its cover.

Use the foam swabs and isopropyl alcohol in the 553-431 Kit to remove remaining dust particles after cleaning
with the 553-641 Pressurized Air.
7. Snap the cover /LED side first) back onto the smoke chamber.
8. Fit the outer cover back onto the detector.

Be sure to fully seat all three prongs.
9. Using a Model 553-533 Smoke Detector Tester, check to see that the detector’s sensitivity meets specifications.

Replace detectors that fail to meet sensitivity specifications.
