Overview

This document describes the Siterwell Electronics CO., Limited Smoke Alarm Device, Model GS522 (Ref: ST522), a photoelectric smoke alarm designed for residential use.

Function Description:

The GS522 is a photoelectric smoke alarm device that detects slow smoldering fires, which typically produce thick, black smoke with little heat and can smolder for hours before igniting into flames. It does not contain radioactive material, making it environmentally harmless. The device is designed to provide an audible warning of a developing fire, sounding an alarm when it detects smoke or combustion particles in the air. It does not sense heat, flame, or gas. For optimal protection, the alarm should be installed in every room (excluding bathrooms and kitchens) and other areas of the home to ensure all occupants can hear and respond to the alarm. Minimum protection requires an alarm in hallways, living rooms, bedrooms, and children's rooms, with each unit placed in the middle of the ceiling of each room.

For typical single-story dwellings, it is recommended to install a smoke alarm on the ceiling inside each bedroom and in the hallway outside each separate sleeping area. If a bedroom area hallway is over 30 feet long, an alarm should be installed at each end. If there is a basement, an alarm should be installed on the basement ceiling at the bottom of the stairwell. For typical multi-story dwellings, the recommendation is to install an alarm on the ceiling inside each bedroom and in the hallway outside each separate sleeping area. If a bedroom area hallway exceeds 30 feet, install an alarm at each end and another at the top of a first-to-second-floor stairwell.

The device features a test button to verify its functionality. It also includes an alarm silence (Hush mode) feature to temporarily quiet nuisance alarms, such as those caused by cooking. During alarm silence, the red LED flashes once every 8 seconds. The unit automatically resets after approximately 10 minutes; if combustion particles are still present, the alarm will sound again. The silence mode can be repeatedly activated until the air is clear.

Important Safety Information:

  • The test button is the only accurate way to test the alarm's functions. Do not use any other test method.
  • Test the smoke alarm weekly to ensure proper operation.
  • If a nuisance alarm occurs, open windows or fan the air around the device to silence it.
  • This smoke alarm is intended for single-family residential use only and should not be installed in multi-family buildings (each unit needs its own alarms) or non-residential buildings. It is not a substitute for a complete alarm system.
  • Install alarms in every room and on every level of the home. Smoke may not reach the alarm in time if a fire starts in a remote part of the home, on another level, in a chimney, wall, roof, or behind a closed door.
  • The alarm horn is loud to alert individuals, but some household members may not hear it due to noise, being sound sleepers, drug/alcohol use, or hearing impairment. Specialty alarms with lights or vibrating devices may be needed for such individuals.
  • Smoke alarms have limitations; they are not foolproof and do not guarantee protection of lives or property from fire. They are not a substitute for insurance.
  • The device can fail at any time; therefore, weekly testing is required, and the unit should be replaced every 10 years.

  • Interconnectable Device: No.
  • Suitable for installation in a recreational vehicle: Yes.
  • Individual alarm indicator: Yes.
  • Alarm prevention facility: Yes.
  • Operating Temperature Range (recommended): Above 5°C and below 45°C.
  • Humidity Range (recommended): Below 85%.

Usage Features:

  • Installation:
    1. Remove the bracket from the alarm body.
    2. Press the bracket against the desired installation position and mark the installation holes with a pencil.
    3. Drill two 5mm holes at the marked spots.
    4. Insert the two plastic plugs into the holes using a hammer.
    5. Attach the bracket to the plastic plugs and secure it tightly with screws.
    6. Fit the alarm body onto the bracket and turn it clockwise until it matches well.
    7. Press the test button to verify operation. The alarm should sound 3 beeps with a 1.5-second pause, repeating until the button is released. If no sound, the alarm is defective.
    • Placement Guidelines:
      • Install in the middle of the ceiling.
      • If not possible, the distance from the wall corner should be beyond 50cm.
      • If the room or hall length exceeds 30 feet, install multiple alarms.
      • On slanting ceilings, install the alarm at least 500mm away from the highest ceiling point.
  • LED Indicators:
    • Red LED - Flashing once every 40 seconds: Indicates proper operation.
    • Red LED - Flashing once per second: Occurs when the test button is pressed or when the alarm detects smoke and goes into alarm (constant pulsating sound). Continues until air is cleared or the test button is released.
    • Red LED - Flashing once every 8 seconds: Indicates the alarm is in alarm silence (Hush mode).
    • Low Battery Indication: An intermittent "chirp" with a red LED flash once every 40 seconds. The test button can be pressed to pause this warning for 10 hours, after which it resets automatically.
    • Fault Indication: The alarm chirps every 40 seconds. Pressing the test button can temporarily pause this warning for 10 hours, but it will still detect smoke. If failures persist, the alarm must be replaced.
  • Alarm Silence (Hush Mode): When the unit is alarming, pressing the test button will pause the alarm for approximately 10 minutes. The red LED will flash every 8 seconds, indicating silence mode. This feature helps minimize nuisance alarms from cooking particles. Use this feature only when the alarm condition is known to be a nuisance, such as smoke from cooking.
  • Do Not Install In:
    • Areas with normal combustion (kitchens, near furnaces, hot water heaters). Use specialized alarms for these areas.
    • High humidity areas (bathrooms, near dishwashers/washing machines). Install at least 10 feet away.
    • Near air returns or heating/cooling supply vents. Install at least 3 feet away, as air currents can blow smoke away.
    • Rooms where temperatures fall below 5°C or rise above 45°C, or humidity is higher than 85%. These conditions reduce battery life or cause false alarms.
    • Extremely dusty, dirty, or insect-infested areas, as particles can interfere with operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Weekly Testing: Test the alarm weekly by pressing the test button to ensure proper operation.
  • Periodic Cleaning: Clean the alarm at least once a month to remove dust, dirt, and debris. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush on all sides and covers of the device.
  • Low Battery Monitor: The alarm will "chirp" approximately every 40 seconds, and the red LED will flash simultaneously for at least thirty days when the battery is low.
  • Battery Replacement: The battery is sealed and not replaceable. If the low battery chirp occurs, the alarm must be replaced with a new one.
  • Do Not Open: Do not attempt to remove the cover to clean inside, as this will affect the warranty.
  • Repair: Do not attempt to repair the alarm yourself, as it will affect the warranty. If the alarm is not operating properly and is still under warranty, return it to the original place of purchase. If out of warranty, have a licensed electrician replace it with a comparable alarm.

Fire Safety Practice:

  • Prepare an Escape Plan: Develop and practice family escape plans regularly.
    1. Familiarize everyone with the alarm sound.
    2. Determine two exits and an escape route from each room.
    3. Teach household members to touch doors for heat and use alternate exits if hot.
    4. Instruct members to crawl along the floor to avoid smoke, fumes, and gases.
    5. Establish a safe meeting place outside the building.
  • In Case of Fire:
    1. Stay calm.
    2. Evacuate the building quickly. Touch doors for heat before opening. Use alternate exits if necessary. Crawl along the floor and do not stop to collect belongings.
    3. Meet at the pre-arranged meeting place outside.
    4. Call the fire department from outside.
    5. Do not re-enter a burning building. Wait for the fire department.
