Sky Broadband Shield Explained

Explanation of the online security and protection service.

Overview

This document serves as a comprehensive guide for setting up, connecting, and managing your Sky Broadband Hub, model SR203UK. It is designed to help you get your broadband service up and running smoothly, connect your devices, and understand key features for optimal use and security.

The primary function of the Sky Broadband Hub is to provide internet access to your home. It acts as the central point for your broadband connection, allowing multiple devices to connect wirelessly (via Wi-Fi) or through wired Ethernet connections. The hub is designed for ease of use, with a straightforward setup process and clear indicators to help you monitor its status.

Usage Features

Activation and Initial Setup:

Your Sky Broadband Hub will not become active immediately upon receipt. There is a specific activation date, which you will find printed on the packaging box. The hub will start working at any time up to midnight on this date. It's important to wait until this date for your service to begin.

Included Components:

The box contains everything you need to set up your broadband. This includes the Sky Broadband Hub itself, some paperwork (including an important safety and product information leaflet), a grey cable, a power cable, and a microfilter. Before starting, it is crucial to read the 'Important safety and product information' leaflet to ensure safe installation and use.

Hub Overview:

The Sky Broadband Hub has several key features on its exterior. On the front, you'll find LED status lights that indicate the operational status of the hub, such as power, internet connectivity, and Wi-Fi activity. On the side, there is a WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™) button and light. This button simplifies connecting compatible devices to your Wi-Fi network without needing to manually enter the password.

The back of the hub provides all the necessary ports for connection. These include a Broadband port for connecting to your phone socket, a Telephone port (if applicable for your service), a Power port for the power cable, and multiple Ethernet ports for wired connections to devices like computers or gaming consoles. There is also a Reset button, which is used for troubleshooting or restoring factory settings.

Wi-Fi Information:

Crucially, the back of your hub also features a label with your Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password. This information is essential for connecting your devices to your wireless network. Keep this information handy during the setup process.

Finding Your Phone Socket:

The first step in connecting your hub is to locate your main phone socket. This is typically where the phone line enters your home and is usually thicker than other phone sockets. Before plugging in the hub, you must unplug anything currently connected to this socket, such as existing phone cables, broadband equipment, or splitters.

Connecting with a One-Port Phone Socket:

If your main phone socket has only one port, the setup involves a microfilter.

  1. Microfilter Installation: Take the microfilter from the box and plug it directly into your phone socket.
  2. Grey Cable Connection: Take the grey cable. Plug one of its purple ends into the purple port on your microfilter. Then, plug the other purple end into the purple port on the back of your hub (the 'Broadband' port). If you unplugged a phone cable or splitter from your phone socket, plug it into the 'Phone' port on the microfilter.
  3. Power Cable Connection: Take the power cable. Plug its blue end into the blue port on the back of your hub (the 'Power' port). Then, plug the other end into a mains power socket and switch it on. After a few minutes, the power, internet, and Wi-Fi lights on the front of your hub should turn green, indicating a successful connection.

Connecting with a Two-Port Phone Socket:

If your main phone socket has two ports, you do not need to use the microfilter.

  1. Grey Cable Connection: Take the grey cable. Plug one of its purple ends into either the left or top port of your phone socket. Then, plug the other purple end into the purple port on the back of your hub (the 'Broadband' port).
  2. Power Cable Connection: Take the power cable. Plug its blue end into the blue port on the back of your hub (the 'Power' port). Then, plug the other end into a mains power socket and switch it on. Similar to the one-port setup, the power, internet, and Wi-Fi lights on the front of your hub should turn green after a few minutes, confirming that your connection is established.

Connecting Your Devices:

Once your Sky Broadband Hub is set up and the lights are green, you can connect your devices. This includes computers, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and even your Sky TV box.

  • Connecting via Wi-Fi (Password Method):
    1. Click or tap the Wi-Fi icon on your device.
    2. Choose your network name (SSID) from the list. This is found on the back of your hub or on a separate 'Connect card' if provided.
    3. Type in your Wi-Fi password (also found on the back of your hub or Connect card).
  • Connecting via Wi-Fi (WPS Method): If your device has a WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™) button:
    1. Turn on WPS on your device.
    2. Hold the WPS button on the side of your hub for a few seconds until it starts flashing amber. If the connection is successful, the WPS light on the hub will turn green. If it remains amber or turns red, the connection was not successful, and you may need to try again or use the password method. For more detailed instructions on connecting devices, you can visit sky.com/connectdevices.

Maintenance Features

Optimal Hub Performance:

For the best performance, it is recommended to leave your Sky Broadband Hub switched on all the time. It is normal for the hub to feel warm during operation, so there's no need to worry about this.

Changing Hub Settings:

You can log in to your hub to change settings such as your Wi-Fi name or password.

  1. Accessing Hub Settings: Connect a device to your Wi-Fi network. Open a web browser and type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar.
  2. Login Credentials: The default username is admin. The password is your current Wi-Fi password (unless you have previously changed it). Be aware that changing your Wi-Fi name or password will disconnect all devices currently connected to your Wi-Fi. You will then need to re-connect them using the new credentials. For more information on managing your Wi-Fi password, visit sky.com/wifipassword.

Resetting Your Hub:

If you encounter issues or need to restore your hub to its factory settings, you can perform a reset.

  • Reset Procedure: Locate the Reset button on the back of your hub. Hold this button until the power light on the hub flashes green (this usually takes about 10 seconds). It is crucial not to unplug or switch off your hub while it is resetting. The power light will turn solid green once the reset process is complete.

Troubleshooting and Support:

If you have followed all the setup steps and your hub is still not working, you can seek further assistance.

  • My Sky App: Check the My Sky app for troubleshooting tips and support.
  • Online Help: Visit sky.com/hubsetup for additional help and guidance.

Security Features

Sky Broadband Shield:

Your Sky Broadband service includes Sky Broadband Shield, a built-in security feature designed to protect your online experience.

  • Content Control: Sky Broadband Shield allows you to control what your family can see or do online. This feature applies to any device connected to your Wi-Fi network, giving you comprehensive control over internet content.
  • Malware and Phishing Protection: It also provides protection against malware and phishing websites. These malicious sites can potentially damage your devices or attempt to steal your personal details. Sky Broadband Shield helps to block access to such sites, enhancing your online safety.
