INSTALLATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
GAS-FIRED CAST-IRON BOILERS FOR NATURAL AND L.P. PROPANE GASES
SENTINEL
The installation must conform to the requirements of the
authority having jurisdiction or, in the absence of such require-
ments, to the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1-lates
edition. The installation must also conform to the additional
requirements in this Slant/Fin Instruction Book.
In addition, where required by the authority having jurisdic-
tion, the installation must conform to American Society of
Mechanical Engineers Safety Code for Controls and Safety
Devices for Automatically Fired Boilers, No. CSD-1. If there
is any conflict in the above requirements, then the more
stringent requirement will apply.
This manual must be left with owner and should be hung
on or adjacent to the boiler for reference.
WARNING
This boiler, gas piping and accessories must be installed,
connected, serviced and repaired by a trained, experienced
service technician, familiar with all precautions required for
gas-fired equipment and licensed otherwise qualified, in
compliance with the authority having jurisdiction.

Overview

This document describes the Slant/Fin Sentinel™ Gas-Fired Cast-Iron Boilers for hot water systems, specifically models SE-70 through SE-245, designed for use with natural gas and LP propane. It provides comprehensive installation and operating instructions, emphasizing safety and proper setup.

Function Description:

The Slant/Fin Sentinel boilers are designed to provide hot water for heating systems. They are equipped with an automatic ignition device to light the pilot and main burners. The boilers incorporate a HydroStat control system (Model 3200-03 & 04) that manages water temperature, optimizes fuel efficiency through a "Thermal Targeting" feature, and includes safety functions like low water cut-off. The control system allows for multi-zoning with either pump zoning (using R845A or R882A/B relays) or zone valve systems (using V8043E/F zone valves), and can prioritize domestic hot water (DHW) when an indirect water heater is integrated.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Boiler Models: SE-70 to SE-245.
  • Gas Types: Natural Gas and LP Propane.
  • Chimney Requirements: Minimum height of 15 ft. from draft hood skirt to top of chimney. Inside diameter should be equal to or larger than dimension C (specified in the dimensions table). Venting must conform to ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54.
  • Clearances for Combustible Constructions: Front: 6", Rear: 6", Left Side: 6", Right Side: 12", Top (above boiler): 28", Flue Connector: 6". Hot water pipes require 1-inch clearance, with 1/2 inch at penetrations covered by non-combustible plates.
  • Electrical: Separately fused 15 Amp circuit with 14 gauge conductors. Must be electrically grounded.
  • Gas Supply Pressure: Minimum and maximum pressures are specified on the boiler rating plate.
  • Manifold Pressure (Natural Gas): Approximately 3-1/2" water column.
  • Manifold Pressure (Propane): Approximately 9-1/2" water column.
  • Water Pressure: Operating pressure between 12 psi (cold water) and 25 psi (at high limit control temperature) for boilers with 30 psi relief valves.

Usage Features:

  • HydroStat Control (Model 3200-03 & 04):
    • Dynamic Display: Shows water temperature and real-time setting verification.
    • High Limit Setting: Adjustable from 100°-220°F (factory set at 190°F).
    • Low Limit Setting: Adjustable from OFF or 110°-220°F (factory set at OFF). Required for tankless coils.
    • Economy Feature (Thermal Targeting): Factory set for 1 zone. Adjustable (OFF, LO, 1-5 zones, HI) to conserve fuel by reducing boiler water temperature based on heating load.
    • Thermal Pre-Purge: Maximizes boiler efficiency by utilizing latent heat from previous run cycles. Not recommended for boilers with tankless coils.
    • Temperature Units: Switchable between Fahrenheit (F) and Celsius (C).
    • Manual Reset Low Water Cut-Off (LWCO): Can be set to automatic (default) or manual reset mode, meeting CSD-1 code requirements.
    • Circulator Activation Options: Circulator can be activated on T/TV call only, I1/I2 call only, or both.
    • Circulator Hold Off (Enhanced Condensing Protection): Delays circulator activation until boiler reaches 125°F to reduce condensing.
    • Outdoor Reset Ready and Warm Weather Shutdown: Optional features requiring a separate kit (part no. 430423000) for advanced energy management.
  • Vent Damper: Automatic vent damper (Slant/Fin Corporation model) must be installed, either vertically or horizontally, to prevent heat loss when the boiler is not operating.
  • Multi-Zoning: Supports multiple heating zones using either circulators or zone valves, with specific wiring diagrams provided for each configuration, including indirect water heaters.
  • Air Control System: Utilizes diaphragm-type compression tanks and automatic air vents to manage system pressure and remove air.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance: Recommended periodic checks include boiler heating surfaces (cleaning), boiler controls (contacts, settings, functioning), piping (leaks), and chimney/venting system (obstructions, leaks).
  • Water Level Check: Regular monitoring of water pressure and adding water as needed. Persistent water loss indicates a potential leak or faulty air control/fill valve.
  • Annual Inspection and Cleaning: Recommended by a competent serviceperson. Includes checking for gas leaks, rechecking gas input rate, adjusting flame characteristics, and cleaning burners and flue passages.
  • Burner Cleaning: Burners can be removed for cleaning. Instructions emphasize proper dust mask and gloves due to crystalline silica in the combustion chamber.
  • Safety Checks: Regular testing of high limit control and gas valve safety shutdown.
  • Anti-freeze Protection: Discusses the use of ethylene glycol (toxic) or propylene glycol (non-toxic) for freeze protection in hydronic systems, especially when a tankless heater is present.
  • Water Treatment: Recommends consulting a reputable water treatment company to extend boiler life and prevent repairs.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides a comprehensive list of common issues (burners fail to operate, burners will not shut off, flash back, delayed ignition, fumes/gas odors, condensation) with corresponding remedies.
  • Replacement Parts: Instructions for ordering replacement parts, emphasizing the use of boiler model and serial number, and advising against attempts by unskilled personnel for complex controls.
