Overview

This document describes the SMC LUBRICATOR, a device designed to lubricate compressed air for pneumatic actuators and solenoid valves.

Function Description

The LUBRICATOR introduces lubricant into compressed air, which is then supplied to pneumatic actuators and solenoid valves. This lubrication helps to reduce friction and wear in these components, extending their lifespan and ensuring smooth operation. The device features an oil adjustment valve to control the amount of lubricant dispensed. It also includes a sight dome (or sight glass in some models) to monitor the oil level. Various bowl options are available, including polycarbonate bowls, metal bowls with sight glass, and metal bowls with bowl guards, to suit different application requirements.

The device supports various thread types for port size, including M5, Rc, NPT, and G. Bowl options include standard polycarbonate, metal bowl, metal bowl with sight glass, and metal bowl with guard (steel plate). Exhaust port options include drain cock, drain cock with barb fitting, and drain cock with barb fitting for nylon tube. Flow direction can be left to right or right to left.

Usage Features

Installation: The lubricator should be installed in a location that allows for easy maintenance and monitoring. It is crucial to ensure the correct flow direction during installation to prevent malfunction. The bowl should be installed vertically with the bowl facing down. The minimum operating flow must be maintained to ensure proper lubrication.

Oil Adjustment: The oil adjustment valve allows users to regulate the amount of lubricant dispensed. Turning the oil adjustment valve counter-clockwise increases the dripping amount, while turning it clockwise reduces it. The valve has multiple rotations, and the fully closed position is further than the minimum dripping amount. The numbered scale markings on the valve are guidelines for adjusting the position.

Piping: Proper piping is essential to eliminate swarf, cutting oil, solid foreign material, and to prevent damage to the equipment. When installing piping, avoid chips and sealing materials from piping screws entering the inside of the equipment. Use sealing tapes, leaving 1.5 to 2 threads of the end of the thread exposed. Tighten screws to the recommended torque values to prevent leakage. For flexible tubing, ensure it is adequately supported to prevent excessive force on the piping.

Air Source: Use clean air. Compressed air containing chemicals, organic solvent, synthetic oil, or corrosive gases may lead to damage or malfunction. Air containing too much moisture may cause malfunction; install an air drier or aftercooler before the lubricator.

Ordering: To order, users must specify the body size (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60), thread type (M5, Rc, NPT, G), port size (01, 02, 03, 04, 06, 08, 10), mounting option (without mounting option, with bracket), bowl type (polycarbonate, metal bowl, metal bowl with sight glass, metal bowl with guard), lubricant exhaust port (drain cock, drain cock with barb fitting, drain cock with barb fitting for nylon tube), flow direction (left to right, right to left), and pressure unit (MPa, °C, psi, °F).

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance: Regular maintenance and checks should be performed to ensure proper functioning. Incorrect handling can cause damage or malfunction. The drain cock should be opened and closed regularly to prevent blockages. Periodic checks for cracks, flaws, or other deterioration on the resin bowl and sight dome are recommended. If any damage is found, replace the bowl or the sight dome.

Cleaning: The dirt in the resin bowl should be periodically cleaned. If it is inclined, dripping may not be confirmed. Remove dirt by washing instead of using a replacement. Never use washing material other than neutral detergent. Otherwise, the bowl is damaged. Use Class 1 turbine oil (without additives) ISO VG32. Other lubricants can cause damage to the device and result in malfunction.

Oil Level Management: Ensure that the internal pressure and checking that there is no internal pressure in the case, remove the oil supply plug slowly and set oil supply to "Max Level" slowly while ensuring that an oil film is not created in the oil supply orifice. For AL30-A, AL40-A, AL50-A, and AL60-A, a slight leak from the inside of the case to the oil supply orifice is normal. Loosen the oil supply plug one turn and wait a short time for pressure to release, then remove the oil supply plug. Set the oil supply to "Max Level" slowly, ensuring no oil film is created over the oil supply orifice. After oil is supplied, ensure that it is correctly positioned, the oil supply "O" ring can be returned to its previous state by gently screwing it in.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for common issues such as oil not dropping, oil mixed in air drops, and air leaks.

  • Oil does not drop: Possible causes include opposite flow direction, insufficient oil, or a damaged damper/element. Remedies include installing correctly, supplying correct oil amount, selecting the lubricator of appropriate size, replacing the damper, or replacing the element.
  • Air is mixed in oil drops: This can be caused by a siphon tube seal or oil running out. Remedies include replacing the siphon tube seal or supplying the correct amount of oil.
  • Air or oil leaks from the sight dome: This indicates a broken sight dome or O-ring. Remedies include replacing the sight dome assembly or O-ring.
  • Air leaks from lubrication plug: This indicates a broken lubrication plug O-ring. Remedy is to replace the lubrication plug assembly.
  • Air leaks between the bowl and the body: This indicates a broken bowl packing or bowl. Remedies include replacing the bowl packing or bowl assembly.

Replacement Procedure: The manual outlines detailed procedures for disassembling and assembling the sight dome, damper retainer, and lubrication plug.

  • Bowl/Sight Dome Assembly: Involves removing the bowl assembly, holding the bowl assembly by hand, rotating counter-clockwise, and using a hook spanner. For assembly, mount the sight dome assembly, rotate clockwise, and tighten to the specified torque.
  • Damper Retainer Assembly: Involves removing the damper retainer assembly by rotating counter-clockwise, using round cutting pliers. For assembly, insert the damper into the holder assembly, ensuring the correct shape (convex/concave) is matched.
  • Lubrication Plug Assembly: Involves disconnecting the lubrication plug assembly by inserting a standard driver and rotating counter-clockwise. For assembly, mount the lubrication plug assembly, insert a standard driver, and rotate clockwise to fix the lubrication plug assembly to the body, tightening to the specified torque.

Disassembly Drawing: Detailed exploded views are provided for AL10-A, AL20-A, AL30-A, AL40-A, AL50-A, and AL60-A models, showing components like the body, sight dome assembly, oil adjustment valve, bowl O-ring, bowl assembly, hook spanner flat, lubrication plug assembly, spacer, steel ball, holder assembly, damper, damper retainer assembly, bowl packing, lock button, and setting mark. Bracket assembly disassembly drawings are also included.
