Maintenance Tips
To keep your SMCCO02-Z in good working
order:
¾ Perform a CO alarm test once a
week (see “Running the Normal CO
Alarm Test” on page 6).
¾ Vacuum the SMCCO02-Z cover once
a month to remove accumulated
dust.
¾ Never use detergents or solvents to
clean the alarm. Chemicals can
permanently damage or temporarily
contaminate the sensor.
¾ Avoid spraying air fresheners, hair
spray, paint, or other aerosols near
the alarm.
¾ Do not paint the unit. Paint will seal
the vents and interfere with proper
sensor operation.
Move the SMCCO02-Z to a remote
location, to prevent possible damage or
contamination of the sensor, prior to
performing any of the following:
¾ Staining or stripping floors or
furniture, painting or wall-papering.
¾ Using aerosols or adhesives.
Note: Reinstall the SMCCO02-Z as
soon as possible to ensure continuous
protection.
The following is a list of substances that,
at high levels, can damage the SMCCO02-
Z or cause temporary readings that are
not CO readings:
¾ Ethylene ¾ Ethanol
¾ Alcohol ¾ Iso-propanol
¾ Benzene ¾ Toluene
¾ Ethyl acetate ¾ Hydrogen
¾ Hydrogen sulfide ¾ Sulfur dioxide
Included in this list are most:
¾ Aerosol sprays ¾ Alcohol-based
products
¾ Paints, thinners,
solvents, and
adhesives
¾ Hair sprays,
after shaves,
and perfumes
¾ Auto exhausts
(cold start)
¾ Some cleaning
agents

About Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless,
and tasteless poison gas that can be fatal when
inhaled. CO inhibits the blood’s capacity to
carry oxygen.
Periodically review this user manual and
discuss your CO alarm emergency procedure
with your family. Never ignore a CO alarm, as
it indicates potentially dangerous CO levels. CO
alarms alert you to the presence of CO before
most people would experience symptoms of CO
poisoning, giving you time to resolve the
problem calmly.
