Overview

This document describes the "SENSE-ible" harness, a device designed for walking dogs.

Function Description:

The SENSE-ible harness is a dog walking aid that aims to provide a comfortable and effective way to control a dog without putting excessive pressure on its neck or restricting its movement. It is designed to be a front-clip harness, meaning the leash attaches at the dog's front (forechest), which helps to redirect the dog's attention back to the handler when it pulls, rather than allowing it to pull forward with full force. The harness is intended to be used with a leash and can initially be used in conjunction with a regular flat collar for added safety and control, especially in high-stimulus environments.

Usage Features:

Putting On the Harness:

  1. Open Snap Buckle: Begin by opening the snap buckle on the harness.
  2. Position Hand: Place your RIGHT hand over the harness label, which is located on the B strap.
  3. Place on Dog: Face your dog and place the B strap over its head and onto its back.
    • The label should be on your dog's left side.
    • The C strap and leash ring should be positioned over your dog's front (forechest).

How to Fit the Harness (Adjust 4 straps in the following order):

  1. B Strap (Important):

    • Adjust to Raise Side Rings: Adjust the B strap to raise the side rings.
    • Position Side Rings: Place the side rings in the middle of your dog's sides, specifically between your dog's back and girth.
  2. G Strap (Girth Strap):

    • Snug Fit: Adjust the G strap to achieve a snug fit, similar to a comfortable belt.
    • Buckling: Reach under your dog with your LEFT hand and grasp the G strap to buckle it.
    • Comfort Check: After buckling, check for comfort room by ensuring one finger can fit under the strap when your dog sits.
  3. C Strap (Chest Strap - Adjust Last):

    • Leash Ring Placement: Carefully adjust both sides of the C strap to position the leash ring over the dog's breast bone.
    • Avoid Over-Adjustment: Do not over-adjust this strap. Your dog needs sufficient room in the C strap to sit comfortably.
    • Strap Angle: The C strap should angle downward when your dog stands and become horizontal when your dog sits.

Checking the Fit:

  • Standing: When the dog is standing, the side rings should be higher than the leash ring, and the chest strap (C strap) should NOT be horizontal.
  • Sitting: When the dog sits, its chest expands, which naturally raises the chest strap to a horizontal position.

Common Fitting Mistakes (Wrong Fit):

  • C Strap Too Low/Tight: If the C strap is too low and too tight, it can restrict the dog's shoulders and legs.
  • Side Rings/Leash Ring Level: If the side rings and leash ring are at the same level, the fit is incorrect. The side rings should always be higher than the leash ring.

Helpful Tip for C Strap:

The C strap should have some "slack" over your dog's shoulder when you pull your leash sideways. This slack is beneficial as it provides the dog with shoulder room, allowing it to walk comfortably.

Introduction & Safety:

Initial Use with a Collar:

  • At first, it is recommended to use a regular flat collar in conjunction with the harness.
  • Leash Attachment: Clip the leash to the TOP of the ring on the harness AND to the ring on the collar.
  • Benefits of Dual Attachment:
    • Prevents the leash from pulling straps against the dog's front legs.
    • Offers an additional layer of safety for unexpected behaviors (e.g., if the harness fails or the dog slips out).
    • Prevents too much load from being placed solely on the chest strap.

Phasing Out the Collar:

  • To gradually transition away from using the collar, clip the leash to the harness and then feed the leash up through the collar.
  • High Stimulus Environments: For environments with high distractions or potential stressors, it is recommended to continue clipping the leash to the collar for enhanced control and safety.

Technical Specifications (Implied):

  • Components: The harness consists of several straps (B Strap, G Strap, C Strap), side rings, a leash ring, a snap buckle, and a label.
  • Material: While not explicitly stated, the visual representation suggests durable webbing material for the straps and metal or strong plastic for the rings and buckle.
  • Design: Front-clip design for anti-pull functionality.

Maintenance Features:

  • No specific maintenance instructions are provided in the document. However, typical maintenance for such a device would involve regular inspection for wear and tear, cleaning as needed, and ensuring all buckles and rings are in good working order.
