Overview

This document describes the Sony HTP-D2135 DVD Home Theatre System, a comprehensive entertainment unit designed to deliver an immersive audio-visual experience.

Function Description

The Sony HTP-D2135 is a DVD Home Theatre System that integrates a DVD player, an AM/FM tuner, and a multi-channel amplifier with a speaker system. Its primary function is to play DVDs, CDs, and other compatible media, providing surround sound for movies, music, and television. The system supports various audio formats, including Dolby Digital and DTS, to create a cinematic atmosphere in your home. It also features a progressive scan output for enhanced picture quality on compatible televisions. The built-in AM/FM tuner allows you to listen to radio broadcasts, expanding your entertainment options. The system is designed to be user-friendly, with a remote control for convenient operation and on-screen displays to guide you through various settings and functions.

Usage Features

Basic Setup and Connections: The system requires careful connection of speakers, the subwoofer, and video cables to your TV. The main unit acts as the central hub, connecting to the front, center, and surround speakers, as well as the passive subwoofer. Video output can be connected via composite, S-video, or component video cables to your television. Audio input from other devices can be connected to the system's audio input jacks. The AM/FM antennas must also be connected for radio reception.

Playing Discs: To play a disc, simply open the disc tray, place the disc with the label side up, and close the tray. The system automatically starts playback. You can control playback functions like play, pause, stop, fast forward, rewind, skip tracks, and repeat using the remote control. The system supports various disc types, including DVDs, Video CDs, and audio CDs. During DVD playback, you can access the disc menu, select chapters, change audio languages, and view subtitles. For Video CDs, you can use the PBC (Playback Control) function to navigate menus and select tracks.

Playing MP3/WMA/JPEG Discs: The system can play MP3 and WMA audio files, as well as display JPEG image files, burned onto CD-R/RW discs. When playing these discs, you can navigate through folders and files using the remote control. For MP3/WMA files, you can select tracks and control playback similar to audio CDs. For JPEG files, you can view images individually or as a slideshow, and rotate them if needed.

Radio Operation: The built-in AM/FM tuner allows you to listen to radio stations. You can manually tune to stations or use the auto scan function to find available stations. Up to 30 FM and 10 AM stations can be preset for quick access. The system displays station frequencies and preset numbers on the front panel display and on-screen.

Sound Field and Effect Settings: The system offers various sound field programs to enhance your listening experience, such as "Movie," "Music," "Game," and "Sports." These programs optimize the sound for different types of content. You can also adjust individual speaker levels (front, center, surround, subwoofer) to customize the sound balance. The "Dynamic Bass Boost" function enhances low frequencies, while the "Night Mode" reduces dynamic range for late-night viewing without disturbing others. The "Digital Cinema Sound" (DCS) feature, developed by Sony Pictures Entertainment, recreates the acoustics of a movie theater in your home.

Picture Settings: For DVD playback, you can adjust various picture parameters, including brightness, contrast, color, and hue, to optimize the image quality for your television. The progressive scan output provides a higher quality image for compatible TVs, reducing flicker and improving detail.

System Settings: The system includes a setup menu accessible via the remote control, allowing you to configure various parameters. These include:

  • Language Settings: Select the on-screen display language, disc menu language, audio language, and subtitle language.
  • Audio Setup: Configure speaker settings (size, distance, level), dynamic range compression, and digital output options.
  • Video Setup: Adjust TV type (4:3 or 16:9), progressive scan settings, and parental control levels.
  • Custom Setup: Set the background color for the menu screen.
  • Password Setup: Set a password for parental control and other restricted functions.

Parental Control: The parental control feature allows you to restrict playback of DVDs based on their rating. You can set a password and a rating level, and the system will prevent playback of discs with a rating higher than your selected level.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer function allows you to set the system to automatically turn off after a specified period (e.g., 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes).

Remote Control: The supplied remote control provides full control over all system functions, including power, disc playback, radio tuning, volume, sound settings, and menu navigation.

Maintenance Features

General Care:

  • Cleaning the Unit: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. For stubborn stains, use a lightly dampened cloth with a mild detergent solution, then wipe dry. Avoid using abrasive pads, scouring powder, or solvents like alcohol or benzene, as these can damage the finish.
  • Cleaning Discs: Wipe discs with a soft cloth from the center outwards. Do not use solvents such as benzene, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or anti-static sprays intended for vinyl LPs, as these can damage the disc.
  • Handling Discs: Hold discs by their edges to avoid fingerprints on the playing surface. Do not attach paper or stickers to discs, or write on them with a ballpoint pen.
  • Storing Discs: Store discs in their cases away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to help users resolve common issues. This includes:

  • Power Issues: Checks for power cord connection and proper outlet function.
  • No Picture/Sound: Verifies video and audio cable connections, correct input selection on the TV, and proper speaker connections.
  • Disc Playback Issues: Addresses problems like discs not playing, skipping, or distorted audio/video, suggesting cleaning the disc, checking disc compatibility, and ensuring the disc is inserted correctly.
  • Remote Control Issues: Advises checking batteries and ensuring no obstructions between the remote and the unit.
  • Radio Reception Issues: Suggests adjusting antenna position or connecting an external antenna for better reception.
  • Sound Quality Issues: Guides users to check speaker connections, adjust speaker levels, and select appropriate sound field programs.
  • On-Screen Display Issues: Helps resolve problems with the on-screen display not appearing or being incorrect.
  • Parental Control Issues: Explains how to reset the parental control password if forgotten.
