Overview

This document describes the Sony SRS-XB33 Wireless Speaker, a portable audio device designed for robust performance and ease of use in various environments.

Function Description

The SRS-XB33 is a wireless speaker primarily designed for audio playback via Bluetooth. It supports advanced audio distribution profiles (A2DP) and audio/video remote control profiles (AVRCP), allowing users to stream music and control playback from compatible devices. The speaker also supports headset (HSP) and hands-free (HFP) profiles, enabling it for call functions. It utilizes various audio codecs including SBC, AAC, and LDAC for high-quality sound transmission.

A key feature of the SRS-XB33 is its waterproof and dustproof capabilities, rated at IPX7 for water immersion and IP6X for dust protection. This makes it suitable for outdoor use, near water, or in dusty environments. The unit is designed to withstand immersion in fresh water, tap water, pool water, and salt water, but not other liquids like soapy water or hot spring water. It is also built to endure drops from 1.22 meters onto plywood, though this does not guarantee against damage or performance deterioration in all conditions.

The speaker incorporates a passive radiator model for enhanced bass performance. It also includes a microphone, allowing for hands-free calling. Voice guidance is a prominent feature, providing audible feedback in English for various operational statuses such as Bluetooth pairing, connection status, battery level, and stereo pair functions.

The SRS-XB33 can be charged via a USB Type-C® port and can also act as a power source, charging other devices through its USB Type-A port (DC 5V, Max. 1A). This makes it a versatile companion for mobile devices. Battery life varies depending on usage, with different durations for STAMINA mode, default settings, and maximum volume with illumination.

The device is compatible with a range of Apple iPhone and iPod models running iOS 10.0 or later, and can be managed through dedicated apps available on the App Store and Google Play.

Usage Features

Wireless Connectivity: The speaker connects wirelessly via Bluetooth Specification version 5.0, offering a maximum communication range of approximately 30 meters line of sight. It operates in the 2.4 GHz band.

Voice Guidance: The speaker provides clear voice prompts for key operations:

  • "BLUETOOTH pairing" when entering pairing mode.
  • "BLUETOOTH connected" upon successful connection.
  • "BLUETOOTH disconnected" when a connection is lost.
  • Battery status updates (e.g., "Battery fully charged," "Battery about 70%," "Please charge") when the BATT button is pressed.
  • "Left/Right" when using the Stereo Pair function.

Charging and Power: The unit can be charged using a commercially available USB AC adaptor (1.5A or 3.0A output recommended). It is important to use a USB Type-C® cable that conforms to the USB standard for 3.0A charging. The supplied USB cable supports up to 1.5A. The speaker's USB Type-A port can be used to charge other devices.

Durability and Environmental Use: Its waterproof and dustproof design allows for use in challenging environments. However, users should avoid exposing the unit to high water pressure (e.g., in a shower) or high temperatures (e.g., sauna, direct hot air from a hair dryer) to prevent malfunction. The cap must be securely fastened to maintain its waterproof and dustproof integrity.

Placement: The speaker should be placed on a flat, level surface to prevent it from falling over due to its own vibrations, which could lead to injury or damage. It is not anti-magnetic, so objects susceptible to magnetism (e.g., credit cards, watches) should be kept away. Avoid placing the unit in extremely hot or cold environments (outside 5°C - 35°C), under direct sunlight, near heat sources, in a vehicle with closed windows in summer, or in excessively dusty or vibrating locations.

Safety: Prolonged skin contact with the powered-on unit may cause low-temperature injury. The product contains magnets, so individuals with pacemakers or other medical devices should consult a doctor before use and avoid placing the product close to such devices.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning and Care: To maintain the unit's water repellent and overall performance, prompt cleaning is recommended if the surface gets dirty.

  • If stained with salt, sand, sunscreen, or other foreign substances, wash the unit with fresh water (tap water) immediately.
  • After getting wet, wipe off moisture with a dry soft cloth and allow the unit to air dry. If water enters the speaker or passive radiator, sound quality may temporarily change; drain the water by placing the unit on a dry soft cloth and then air dry.
  • Do not use detergents, thinner, benzine, or alcohol for cleaning, as these can impair the fabric's water repellent function.
  • In cold regions, always wipe off moisture after use to prevent freezing.
  • Carefully remove any sand grains or foreign matter from the fabric or other parts; avoid using a vacuum cleaner, which could damage the speaker.

Battery Maintenance: Even if not used for extended periods, the battery should be charged to full capacity once every 6 months to maintain its performance and longevity. The unit has internal circuitry that automatically stops operation if used or left outside the recommended temperature range (5°C - 35°C) to protect itself. Charging may also stop or volume may reduce at high temperatures to protect the battery.

Cap Management: The cap is crucial for maintaining the waterproof and dustproof performance. Always ensure it is closed completely when using the unit. When closing, be careful not to trap foreign objects inside, as this can compromise the seal and lead to malfunction from water or dust ingress.

Software and Licensing: The product includes software under GNU General Public License (GPL) or GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). Source code for this software is available on the Sony website. Users are advised to review the End User License Agreement for the device.
