Overview

This document provides operating instructions for the Sony Trinitron Color TV models KV-20HFR and KV-27HFR. It covers various aspects of the television's functionality, features, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Sony Trinitron Color TV is a multi-band receiver capable of displaying television programs. It features a new Microblack™ Trinitron picture tube, designed for high resolution and contrast. The built-in tuner supports VHF, UHF, and CATV channels, offering access to up to 125 cable channels, totaling 181 possible off-air and cable channels.

For audio, the TV includes a reflecting surround system for enhanced sound reproduction, aiming to create a live sound experience. It also incorporates MTS (Multichannel TV Sound) for receiving stereo programs and/or Second Audio Programs (SAP). External audio jacks allow for listening to sound from connected audio equipment, while variable audio output jacks enable reproduction of TV or video sound through an external audio system. Monitor output jacks facilitate VCR recording of the picture and sound being monitored on the TV.

The TV is equipped with built-in video input jacks, allowing direct hook-up to up to three VCRs or other optional equipment. An ANT/AUX button on the Remote Commander provides one-touch selection for pay cable TV when a converter is connected.

Usage Features

The television offers a range of user-friendly features. It comes with a Remote Commander for operating both the TV and a VCR from a distance. Automatic programming simplifies channel setup, allowing all receivable channels to be preset with a single button press. An on-screen display provides visual feedback for channel numbers, modes (such as "MUTING," "SLEEP," "MAIN," "SAP," "BOTH," "VIDEO," and "EXT-A"), and other settings.

A Timer/Block function allows for automatic program starting and channel blocking, useful for parental control or scheduling viewing. A Sleep timer automatically turns off the TV after approximately one hour. The Jump button enables quick switching between two channels, making it easy to track two programs alternately.

Picture quality is enhanced by the Dynamic Color™ system, which aims for superior color reproduction, natural facial tones, and dazzling whites. The Dynamic Picture™ system automatically adjusts picture contrast to reveal more detail in both bright and dark scenes. A Colorpure Filter™ is included to produce fine picture detail without color spill or noise.

Controls are located on both the front panel and the Remote Commander. Front panel controls include a POWER switch, VOLUME buttons, CHANNEL scan buttons, SURROUND button, TV/VIDEO button, SPEAKER switch, AUTO STEREO switch, TREBLE and BASS controls, BALANCE control, SHARPNESS control, BRIGHT (brightness) control, COLOR control, HUE control, PICTURE buttons, and a CABLE selector. Rear panel connections include VIDEO INPUT jacks (1, 2, 3), EXT AUDIO jacks, MONITOR OUTPUT jacks, AUDIO OUTPUT (VARIABLE) jacks, AUX terminal, TO CONVERTER terminal, and VHF/UHF antenna terminal.

The Remote Commander provides additional controls such as Channel presetting buttons (AUTO PROG, ERASE, ADD), VCR operation buttons, MUTING button, Mode select buttons (TV, VIDEO1, VIDEO2, VIDEO3, EXT-A), Channel number buttons, DISPLAY button, ENTER button, VTR/Video 8 selector, Timer Block buttons (TIMER, CLEAR, AM/PM, TIMER/BLOCK), POWER switch (for VCR), TV/VTR button, CHANNEL scan buttons (for VCR), SLEEP button, ANT/AUX button, MTS button, JUMP button, and REFLECTING SURROUND button.

Maintenance Features

For safety, the unit should only be operated on 120 V AC. It is important to ensure proper plug insertion and to unplug the unit if any liquid or solid object falls into the cabinet, or if it will not be used for several days. To disconnect the cord, pull it by the plug, not the cord itself.

Installation guidelines recommend not blocking ventilation openings to prevent internal heat build-up. The unit should not be installed in hot, humid, dusty, or vibrating environments.

Cleaning the unit should be done with a slightly damp soft cloth and a mild household detergent, avoiding strong solvents like thinner or benzine, which could damage the cabinet finish.

For future transport, it is recommended to retain the original carton and packing materials.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting section to help users resolve common picture and sound disturbances by checking symptoms and suggesting adjustments, such as adjusting picture/brightness, checking connections, or verifying channel settings. If problems persist, users are advised to contact their nearest service facility.
