This document describes the SOUNDMAX SM-CSX401 Car Passive Subwoofer, a speaker system designed for in-vehicle installation. It functions as a sound emitter when connected to a head unit and amplifier.
Before installation, users are advised to thoroughly read the owner's manual, which contains crucial operating and maintenance instructions. Speakers should not be installed in locations prone to excessive heat, moisture, dust, or physical impact. Prior to mounting and connecting wires, ensure that the negative pole terminal wire is disconnected from the accumulator to prevent short circuits or fire. Metal objects (e.g., coins, tools) should never be placed inside the acoustic system to avoid short circuits.
Ensure that speaker terminals are connected to the correct outputs of the music source. Wiring should not be run outside or underneath the vehicle where it could be damaged by road hazards or moving parts. Utilize existing wire channels, sills, panels, and molding strips inside the vehicle for safe and neat wiring. Always confirm the negative pole terminal wire is disconnected from the accumulator when connecting speaker terminals. After installation, turn on components and slowly increase volume, checking all connections for proper installation and use. Avoid continuous use of the speaker system beyond its nominal power handling capacity. Keep recorded tapes, watches, and credit cards with magnetic coding away from the speaker system to protect them from magnet damage. If an appropriate mounting location cannot be found, consult a car dealer or a nearest dealer. Exercise extreme caution when working near the gas tank, gas lines, brake or hydraulic lines, and electrical wiring.
Installation kits are available from dealers or local stereo shops to facilitate installation and provide a clean, custom appearance. For installation method inquiries, consult a professional auto sound dealer/installer. Choose a location with sufficient space, air circulation, no obstructions to device operation, and no interference with car mechanical and electronic components. The speaker diffuser must move freely, and the speaker frame must be securely fastened.
For optimal performance, it is recommended to build an enclosure for the woofer. The Thiele & Small Parameters (TSP) provided in the manual (page 9) can assist in calculating the linear dimensions and volume for the most appropriate enclosure. The kit includes 8 self-tapping screws for securing the speaker inside the enclosure. Installation dimensions, including tolerance limits (1-2 mm), are provided in the unit appearance diagram.

Selecting a wire of suitable diameter is crucial. The wire diameter depends on the current in the speaker system and the required length to connect the subwoofer and amplifier. The manual includes a detailed table for wire length and corresponding AMPER ratings, showing recommended wire gauges (e.g., 16g, 14g, 12g, 10g, 8g, 4g, 0g) for various current levels and lengths up to 15.2 meters.
When connecting the woofer to the amplifier, ensure that the woofer's RMS power characteristics match those of the amplifier. Also, verify that the amplifier can operate at the subwoofer's impedance. Once all specifications match, connect the subwoofer to the amplifier and the amplifier to the car audio system.
