Overview

The Speedplay Ultra Light Action Pedal System is a high-performance cycling component designed for recreational, non-competitive road riding. It features a unique cleat and pedal interface that prioritizes ease of engagement, float, and adjustability, aiming to enhance rider comfort and efficiency. The system is available in Chrome-Moly, Stainless Steel, and Titanium spindle versions, with the Titanium version having a rider weight limit.

Function Description

The core function of the Speedplay Ultra Light Action Pedal System is to provide a secure and efficient connection between a cyclist's shoe and the bicycle crank. Unlike traditional single-sided pedals, Speedplay pedals are dual-sided, allowing for easy engagement from either side. The system utilizes a cleat that attaches to the shoe and a pedal body that houses the engagement mechanism. When the cleat engages the pedal, it provides a "free float" mechanism, allowing the foot to rotate a few degrees without disengaging. This float is designed to reduce strain on the knees and other joints, promoting a more natural pedaling motion. The system also offers significant adjustability for fore-aft, side-to-side, and rotational positioning of the cleat, enabling riders to fine-tune their foot placement for optimal comfort and power transfer. The Walkable™ Cleats, a key feature, are designed with a rubberized cover that makes walking off the bike easier and more stable, protecting the cleat mechanism from wear and debris.

Usage Features

The Speedplay Ultra Light Action Pedal System is engineered for user-friendliness and adaptability.

  • Dual-Sided Entry: A primary advantage is the dual-sided pedal entry, which simplifies clipping in, especially in busy traffic or at the start of a ride. Riders can engage the pedal from either side, eliminating the need to flip the pedal into the correct orientation.
  • Walkable™ Cleats: The included Walkable™ Cleats feature a durable, rubberized cover that not only protects the cleat mechanism but also provides improved traction and stability when walking. This is a significant improvement over traditional cleats, which can be slippery and prone to damage when walking. The cleat cover also helps prevent debris from entering the cleat mechanism.
  • Adjustability: The system offers extensive adjustability to accommodate a wide range of rider biomechanics.
    • Fore-Aft Adjustment: The cleat can be moved forward or backward on the shoe sole to position the ball of the foot directly over the pedal spindle, optimizing power transfer and reducing hot spots.
    • Side-to-Side Adjustment: The cleat can be adjusted laterally to fine-tune the Q-factor (the distance between the pedals), which can help align the hips, knees, and ankles.
    • Float Adjustment: The Ultra Light Action pedals provide a non-centering free float, allowing the foot to rotate naturally without spring tension. This can be beneficial for riders with knee issues or those who prefer a less restrictive feel.
    • Leg-Length Discrepancy Shims: Speedplay offers optional Leg-Length Shim Kits that can be used to correct leg length discrepancies, further enhancing rider comfort and preventing compensatory movements.
  • Easy Engagement and Disengagement: The Ultra Light Action mechanism is designed for smooth and intuitive engagement and disengagement. Riders report a crisp, audible snap upon engagement and a consistent release.
  • Cleat Buddies: For added protection when walking in dirty or muddy conditions, the system includes Cleat Buddies. These small covers fit into the cleat cavity, preventing contamination and ensuring reliable engagement. They are easily installed, removed, and can be stored in a pocket while riding.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the Speedplay Ultra Light Action Pedal System.

  • Routine Cleat Lubrication: The cleat springs and pedal engagement edges require routine lubrication with a dry-type (PTFE) lubricant, such as Speedplay SP-LUBE, preferably every one or two rides. This prevents wear, ensures smooth engagement, and prevents the springs from binding. Wet lubricants are not recommended as they attract dirt.
  • Cleat Cleaning: If the cleat springs become clogged with debris, they must be thoroughly cleaned and relubricated to ensure proper opening and closing. Failure to do so can lead to difficult engagement, disengagement, or inadvertent release.
  • Cleat Replacement: Cleats should be replaced at least every 3000-5000 miles or whenever visible wear is apparent. When replacing cleats, all used parts should be replaced with new Ultra Light Action Walkable™ Cleat parts.
  • Pedal Bearing Lubrication: The precision bearings within the pedals require periodic greasing. Speedplay recommends greasing the pedal bearings with a pump-type grease gun at least every 2000 miles or every three months, or immediately after riding in wet, rainy, or unusually dusty conditions. A high-quality, waterproof bearing grease should be used. The pedals feature a built-in grease port for easy lubrication. Riders should look for a slight resistance when spinning the pedal; if it spins freely for more than half a turn or if grinding is detected, it needs greasing.
  • Disassembly and Reassembly: The manual provides detailed instructions for disassembling and reassembling both Chrome-Moly and Stainless Steel/Titanium pedals for maintenance. This includes removing body screws, nuts, and bearings. Specific torque values are provided for reassembly to ensure proper function and safety.
  • Needle Bearing: It is important to note that the needle bearing in the alloy sleeve (Chrome-Moly) or pedal body (Stainless Steel/Titanium) is permanently bonded and should not be removed, as this can damage the components.
  • Warning on Over-tightening: Specific warnings are given against over-tightening cleat fastening screws and pedal components, as this can lead to binding, damage, or unsafe operation.
