INSTRUCTION MANUAL PACE TRAINER MODEL (PT #90060 Sky Blue)
RACE PACE TRAINING
Congratulations on your SportCount Pace Trainer purchase!
The Pace Trainer is designed to optimize workouts for competitive athletes. Race Pace Training is a new
training technique based on the principle that the best and most effective sport training sessions should
be done at competition speeds. Traditional long workouts at slow speeds can be harmful because they
tend to reinforce bad technique habits that prevent athletes from ever reaching their fastest speed
potential. Race Pace Training does the opposite -- It reinforces muscle memory around good technique
habits necessary to win races.
Race Pace Training programs require athletes to design workouts around specific competition events and
speed goals. Typically, athletes divide the event distance they want to compete at into shorter segments,
with short rest periods between each segment. They will need to accurately record the time for each race
segment, or “Pace Lap”, and also keep track of the rest periods between Pace Laps. For example,
swimmers who want to swim a 100 meter freestyle race in under 1 minute might build their workout
around 25 meter sprints at 15 seconds each. After a short warm up swim, you would begin by swimming
a 25 meter pace lap at the 15 second pace, followed by a short rest period. The rest period should be just
long enough to catch your breath and be ready to swim another lap at speed. The cycle of pace lap and
rest time can be repeated for as long as you are able to swim close to your target pace lap time. When
you get to the point where you can’t continue swimming at your desired pace speed, it’s time to take a
longer rest or stop the workout so you can avoid falling into the slow speed/bad habit trap.
The SportCount Pace Trainer is the most efficient and convenient device for Race Pace Training
workouts. You will be able to count and time Pace Laps, keep track of rest time, and review summary
statistics at the end of your workout. It's easy to use, and because it is operated with one hand, it doesn’t
interfere with the natural flow of exercise. You should take the time to try it before you jump into your
exercise routine. Practice putting the Pace Trainer through its functions a few times. In most cases, you
will want to wear it on your index finger (either the right or left hand may be used). Make sure it is
oriented so you can comfortably reach the button with your thumb.

Overview

The SportCount Pace Trainer (Model PT #90060 Sky Blue) is a specialized device designed to optimize workouts for competitive athletes by facilitating Race Pace Training. This innovative training technique emphasizes performing sport training sessions at competition speeds, aiming to reinforce muscle memory around good technique habits essential for winning races. Unlike traditional long workouts at slow speeds, which can foster bad technique, the Pace Trainer helps athletes maintain high-performance habits.

Function Description

The core function of the Pace Trainer is to accurately time and count "Pace Laps" and manage "Rest Periods" during Race Pace Training workouts. Athletes design their workouts by dividing their event distance into shorter segments, with brief rest periods between each segment. The device allows users to precisely record the time for each Pace Lap and track the duration of rest periods.

For example, a swimmer aiming for a 100-meter freestyle race under 1 minute might structure their workout around 25-meter sprints at 15 seconds each. After a short warm-up, the swimmer would begin a 25-meter Pace Lap at the target 15-second pace, followed by a short rest period. The rest period is intended to be just long enough to recover and prepare for the next high-speed lap. This cycle of Pace Lap and rest time is repeated as long as the athlete can maintain their target pace. When the desired pace can no longer be sustained, the workout is either paused for a longer rest or ended to prevent falling into slow speed/bad habit patterns.

The Pace Trainer is operated with a single button, making it convenient for one-handed use without interfering with the natural flow of exercise. It is typically worn on the index finger, with the button positioned for comfortable thumb access.

Usage Features

  1. Power-Up: To start the Pace Trainer, press the button. The display will show all "0's," indicating it's ready for use. A battery indicator in the top right corner shows the battery status. A filled image signifies a normal battery level, while an outline indicates the battery is low and needs replacement.

  2. Timing and Counting Pace Laps:

    • Press the button to begin timing a Pace Lap. The display will show the running time.
    • Press the button again upon completing the Pace Lap. The timer will then display the Pace Lap number (e.g., "PL 1") alternating with the time of that Pace Lap. Both the Pace Lap time and number are recorded in memory and displayed alternately every 2 seconds.
  3. Timing Rest Periods:

    • When a Pace Lap is completed and the button is pressed, a second timer silently begins to track the Rest Time.
    • Pressing the button again will display the running Rest Time, alternating with the rest period number. This helps athletes manage their rest, but Rest Time data is not recorded in memory.
    • Once the target Rest Time is reached (e.g., 30 seconds), press the button to reset the timer to zeros and then press it again to start timing the next Pace Lap.
  4. Summary Mode:

    • After the final Pace Lap, quickly press the button to record its time.
    • Hold down the button for approximately 4 seconds to end the workout and enter Summary Mode. This mode allows review of Pace Lap data and can be accessed immediately or hours later.
    • In Summary Mode, the display automatically shows the TOTAL TIME, which is the combined time of all Pace Laps (excluding rest time). It alternates with the TOTAL PACE LAP count every 2 seconds. For example, it might show 32 Pace Laps with a total time of 14 minutes and 41.07 seconds.
    • Pressing the button again will display the AVERAGE PACE LAP TIME, alternating with "AVG" every 2 seconds.
    • Subsequent button presses will show INDIVIDUAL PACE LAP NUMBER AND TIME, flipping between the Pace Lap Number and its corresponding time every 2 seconds. The Pace Trainer can store up to 99 Pace Lap times. After reviewing the final Pace Lap, another button push returns the display to Total Time and Total Pace Lap Count.
  5. Timing Over 1 Hour: If elapsed time exceeds 1 hour, the display shifts to show hours, minutes, and seconds. A black bar appears over the two rightmost digits to indicate they now represent seconds. The Pace Trainer can time up to 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. After this, the display resets to 00'00.00 and restarts. If no button is pressed for 24 hours during timing, the device enters sleep mode (blank display) to save battery life, and Pace data is saved as if a reset occurred at the 24-hour mark.

  6. Reset/Turn Off: From Summary Mode, press and hold the button for 3 seconds to RESET the Pace Trainer, returning the display to zeros. This action erases all stored lap times. If left in reset or summary mode for 10 minutes, the display automatically shuts down to conserve battery life.

Maintenance Features

  1. Water-Resistance: All SportCount models are designed to withstand water pressure associated with normal swimming. After swimming, it is recommended to wash the device with fresh water and clean it with a dry cloth before storage.

  2. Temperature: Avoid exposing the SportCount to direct sunlight or very high temperatures for extended periods, as this can darken the display. Similarly, very low temperatures may cause slight time inaccuracies. These issues correct themselves once the device returns to normal temperature.

  3. Shocks: Handle the device carefully to avoid dropping it or hitting it against hard surfaces, which can cause mechanical damage.

  4. Static Electricity: The integrated circuit can be affected by static electricity. Avoid touching electronic devices and be cautious of synthetic clothing in dry weather that may generate strong static shocks.

  5. Chemicals: Do not expose the SportCount to solvents such as gasoline, alcohol, cosmetics, cleaners, paints, or similar substances, as they can damage the device.

  6. Battery Change: The battery is expected to last at least one year. When the battery indicator lights up, or the display becomes dim or blank, battery replacement is necessary. It is recommended to have a qualified technician or SportCount Inc. replace the battery with a Lithium battery CR2016 or equivalent.

  7. Warranty: The SportCount comes with a limited one-year warranty covering defects in material and workmanship from the purchase date. This warranty does not cover the battery, crystal, or band, nor damage resulting from consumer misuse rather than manufacturing defects.

  8. Service or Repair: For service or repair needs, securely pack the device and send it to the SportCount Service Center. Customer service can be contacted via phone or email for questions and additional information.
