Ensure rack hooks do not contact vehicle roof rails to prevent permanent deformation damage.

Adhere to Bicycle Carrying Capacity

Do not exceed the designated carrying capacity; maximum is 3 bikes totaling 132lbs/60kg.

Regularly Check Rack Security

Periodically check and tighten all bolts and knobs for secure attachment.

Inspect and Replace Straps

Check straps for wear and replace them if frayed or worn, as worn straps are dangerous.

Usage Restrictions

Rack is not intended for off-road use, tandems, recumbents, or installation on trailers/towed vehicles.

Safety Strap Importance

Failure to use the safety strap may result in the loss of bicycles.

Vehicle Damage Prevention

Avoid opening the trunk/rear hatch with the rack installed to prevent vehicle damage.

Safe and Proper Product Use

Secure Bicycles with Strap

Always secure bicycles to the carrier using the 80" strap.

Avoid Exhaust Pipe Proximity

Keep bicycle tires away from the exhaust pipe to prevent melting and destruction.

Inspect Before and After Use

Check the SR3162 and straps before each use, and after placing bicycles, as weight may loosen straps.

Frequent Tightening Recommended

Tighten all straps and hubs regularly, especially on bumpy roads, and immediately if bicycles shift.

Remove Rack When Not In Use

Remove the SR3162 from the vehicle when it is not in use to prevent wear.

Bike Rack Installation Steps

Adjust Hub Assemblies

Loosen the two adjustable hub assemblies by untightening the knobs.

Set Upper Support Leg Angle

Adjust the upper support leg to match the vehicle angle, ensuring only it rests on glass.

Angle Bike Support Arms

Ensure the bike support arms are angled slightly upward, approximately 15 degrees.

Attach Upper Hooks

Attach upper hooks to the trunk/hatch lid edge and adjust straps for a secure fit.

Position Lateral Hooks

Place lateral hooks on the trunk/hatch lip or rear door lip, ensuring straps are at a 90° angle.

Attach Lower Hooks

Secure lower strap hooks to the trunk/hatch bottom edge, bumper underside, or frame members.

Mounting Bicycles Onto Carrier

Place Bicycles on Support Arms

Place bicycles in cradles, covering pedals closest to the vehicle to prevent scratches.

Secure Bicycles with 80 Strap

Use the 80" strap to secure each bicycle, forming figure 8s around frames and arms.

Use Additional Securing Methods

Consider using shock cord or rope to prevent wheels from turning and frames from swaying.

Tighten Bottom Straps Securely

Tighten bottom straps while applying pressure, checking tightness before and after adding bikes.

Maximum Security Knot

For maximum security, tie a simple knot at the end of the buckle strap.

Overview

The SportRack SR3162 is a 3-bike strap-on trunk-mounted bicycle carrier designed for safe and proper transportation of bicycles on the rear of a vehicle. It features adjustable hub assemblies, upper and lower support frames, bike support arms, and an 80-inch strap with a cam buckle for securing the bicycles. Rubber bumpers are included to protect the vehicle's paint.

Function Description:

The SR3162 is designed to securely transport up to three bicycles on the trunk or rear hatch of a vehicle. It attaches to the vehicle using a system of hooks and straps that are tightened to hold the carrier firmly in place. Bicycles are then placed onto the support arms and secured with the provided strap. The design aims to protect the vehicle's paint when properly mounted.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 3 bikes maximum.
  • Weight Capacity: 132 lbs (60 kg).
  • Strap Length: 80 inches.
  • Bike Support Arm Angle: Should be angled slightly upward about 15 degrees.
  • Upper Support Leg Adjustment: Max 5 1/2 inches (165 mm).

Usage Features:

  • Adjustable Hub Assemblies: Loosen and tighten two knobs to adjust the angle of the upper support leg, ensuring the carrier fits the vehicle's contour. The upper support leg may rest on glass if properly adjusted.
  • Upper Hook Attachment: Two upper hooks attach to the slot at the leading edge of the trunk or hatch lid. Strap lengths are adjusted to position the SR3162 correctly.
  • Lateral Hook Attachment: Lateral hooks are positioned to the outside edge of the trunk lip, hatch lip, or rear door lip. Straps should always be at a 90-degree angle from the attached edge.
  • Lower Hook Attachment: Two lower strap hooks can be attached to the bottom edge of the trunk/hatch, the underside of the bumper (if secure), or metal frame members under the vehicle. Alternatively, they can be attached to left and right tow hooks under the vehicle, or to holes/edges of the metal bumper behind the plastic bumper cover. It is crucial to ensure the strap does not rub against sharp objects.
  • Bicycle Placement: Bicycles are placed onto the support arms in the cradles. The pedal closest to the vehicle should be covered to prevent scratching. The position and direction of bicycles may vary based on type and frame size.
  • Bicycle Securing: Bicycles are secured to the support leg using the 80-inch strap, forming figure-8 shapes around the last bicycle frame and the SR3162 arms. Extra shock cord or rope is recommended to prevent wheels from turning and frames from swaying.
  • Safety Strap: The 80-inch strap is essential for securing bicycles. Failure to use it may result in loss of bicycles.
  • Trunk/Hatch Access: Do not open the trunk/rear hatch with the rack installed, as it may cause damage to the vehicle.
  • Vehicle Compatibility: Choose the installation illustration that most closely approximates your vehicle. Some vehicles cannot safely accept any rear deck carrier.
  • Hook Material: All hooks must be attached to metal, not fiberglass, plastic, or glass.
  • Exhaust Clearance: Do not let bicycle tires hang near the exhaust pipe, as hot exhaust can melt and destroy the tires.

Maintenance Features:

  • Strap Inspection: Check straps for wear and replace if worn, as worn straps are dangerous.
  • Bolt and Knob Tightness: Check the tightness of all bolts and knobs periodically.
  • Pre-Use Inspection: Inspect and check the SR3162 before each use, both before and after placing bicycles, as the weight may cause straps to loosen initially.
  • During Use Inspection: Tighten all straps and hubs each time the carrier and bicycles are inspected. Check tightness at regular intervals during use, more frequently on bumpy roads, and immediately if bicycles shift position.
  • Removal When Not in Use: Remove the SR3162 when not in use to avoid additional wear on both the vehicle and the carrier.
  • Strap Security: For maximum security, a simple knot should be tied at the end of the buckle after tightening.

Warnings and Limitations:

  • Ensure hooks do not contact the roof rail to prevent permanent deformation damage.
  • Do not exceed the designated carrying capacity of 3 bikes or 132 lbs (60 kg).
  • Not intended for off-road use.
  • Not intended for tandems or recumbents.
  • Do not install on a trailer or other towed vehicle.
  • Improper attachment or misuse can be hazardous and may result in damage to the SR3162, bicycles, vehicle, or vehicles driving behind.
