Overview

The Premier SpraySense Anti-Bark Spray Collar is a revolutionary product designed to help dog owners gain control over their dog's problem barking by combining innovative technology with proven behavior modification techniques. Clinically proven to be 88% effective at stopping or reducing barking, the device works by emitting a burst of spray when a dog barks. This spray acts on four of the dog's five senses—hearing, sight, touch, and smell—to create an instantaneous and pain-free training process.

Kit Contents:

The kit includes:

  • A spray device with an ON/OFF switch.
  • A 24-inch adjustable nylon collar with a quick-snap buckle and a keeper (which comes attached to the collar).
  • A can of Premier-branded stain-free, hypoallergenic spray.
  • A 6-volt battery.
  • A lifetime warranty.

Device Components:

The spray device itself features a battery compartment, a fill port for the spray, a spray valve, a microphone to detect barking, and an ON/OFF switch. The nylon collar includes a quick-snap buckle for easy attachment and removal, and a keeper to secure the loose end of the strap.

Preparing the Collar:

To prepare the collar, first remove the keeper from the strap. Orient the spray device so that the fill port and spray valve are facing up, and the battery compartment is facing the user. Grasp the strap in your right hand and thread it from back to front through the ear on the right side of the device. Bring the strap around the front/face of the device and then thread it from front to back through the ear on the left. It's crucial to ensure that the strap does not cover the microphone. Once the strap is threaded, place the keeper back on the strap, with its tapered edge facing inward. Finally, attach the quick-snap buckle to the strap by feeding the free edge of the strap into the slot closest to the center, starting from the inside of the curve, and then feeding the free end through the slot on the edge of the buckle. After assembly, pass the loose strap through the keeper to prevent slipping and maintain a consistent fit.

Filling the Spray Reservoir:

To fill the spray reservoir, hold the spray device with the fill port facing up. Turn the spray can upside down and place its nozzle into the fill port. Apply firm pressure, pushing down on the can and holding for 15 seconds. Repeat this process, holding for an additional 5 seconds, to fully fill the reservoir. The device cannot be overfilled. If spray escapes during filling, increase downward pressure on the can to ensure a better seal. A full reservoir holds approximately 25 sprays. It is important to routinely refill the spray reservoir before every use to avoid teaching the dog that persistence can eliminate the spray.

Inserting the Battery:

To insert the battery, remove the battery compartment cover. Ensure that the "+" symbol on the battery aligns with the "+" symbol inside the battery compartment. Replace the compartment cover. The ON/OFF switch is located at the bottom of the device. When the battery is in and the device is ON, it is "listening" for barks. To prolong battery life, always turn the device OFF when it is not in use.

Testing the Spray Device:

Before each use, it is recommended to test the spray action. Turn the device ON and blow into the microphone to confirm that the spray mechanism is working correctly.

Fitting the Training Collar:

Before placing the collar on your dog for the first time, remove all other collars. Position the spray collar around your dog's neck so that the spray valve is directed upward toward the dog's muzzle. Adjust the collar to fit properly, allowing enough space to slip two fingers comfortably underneath. If desired, excess strap length can be trimmed, but be sure to heat-seal the cut end to prevent fraying.

Important Cautions:

  • Do not leave your dog unattended while wearing the training collar until it is accustomed to the spray device and the collar is properly fitted and working.
  • Do not use this collar while your dog is swimming or exposed to prolonged water spray. The spray device is water-resistant but not waterproof and may stop working if submerged.
  • Do not expose the spray device to freezing temperatures or conditions warmer than 110°F (43°C). Avoid leaving the device in direct sunlight, by a window, or in a car on a summer day.
  • This system is not a toy. Read all operating instructions carefully, fill the spray device only with recommended spray products, and store it away from children's reach.
  • The spray device should only be used on healthy dogs. If your dog has anxiety-based behavior or health problems, consult a veterinarian before using this training system.
  • The collar should not be left on dogs 24 hours a day; dogs should be given free time without the collar to play and relax.

Using the Collar as a Training Tool:

To observe your dog's response, place the dog in a situation where it typically barks. When the dog barks, the device should spray, surprising the dog and causing it to stop barking, perhaps by jumping, shaking its head, or sneezing. Do not yell "NO" or say anything when the dog barks. Instead, when the dog stops barking, say "good quiet." If the stimulus causing the barking is still present but the dog remains quiet, reward the desired behavior with verbal praise ("good quiet") and a food reward. This helps the dog associate "good quiet" with not barking. With repeated pairing, the dog will learn to stop barking with the verbal request for "quiet."

Removing the Collar:

Detach the collar using the quick-snap release. Remember to turn the device OFF after every use to maximize battery life.

Purchasing Spray Refills and Batteries:

Batteries, citronella, and scentless spray refills are available for purchase. Only Premier-branded spray refills should be used to fill the spray reservoir. Contact customer service for more information or check local pet stores.

Storage:

For long-term storage (more than a week), always remove the battery and empty the reservoir. To empty the reservoir, use a ballpoint pen to depress the fill port stem and release any remaining spray. This practice helps prolong the operating life of the spray mechanism.

Troubleshooting:

  • Device doesn't spray when dog barks:
    • Empty spray reservoir: Refill the reservoir as described above. Ensure firm pressure is applied to the spray can for a good seal.
    • Dead battery: Check the battery. The most common reason for malfunction is a dead battery. Turn the device OFF when not in use to extend battery life. Ensure the battery is inserted correctly, with the "+" aligned. Try several different batteries, as newly purchased ones can sometimes be weakened or expired.
  • Device sprays when you blow into the microphone, but not when dog barks:
    • Collar fit: A strap that is too tight or too loose can prevent sound waves from being picked up by the microphone. The device should be centered near the dog's Adam's apple.
    • Hair blocking microphone: Long hair can block the microphone. Try tying a bandana around the dog's neck under the collar, clipping hair shorter in the neck area, or using hair bands to hold hair away from the microphone.
  • Device sprays when dog is not barking:
    • Other collars: Remove all other collars when using the anti-bark device, as jangling dog tags, chains, and buckles can cause inappropriate sprays.
    • Collar fit: A collar that is fit too loosely may pick up other sounds, triggering the spray.
