Overview

The document is an installation, basic programming, and operation manual for the "Star Phazer" and "StarLaser X" ultra low profile modular lightbars.

Function Description

The Star Phazer and StarLaser X are ultra low profile modular lightbars designed for emergency and warning applications. They utilize high-intensity LED lamps to provide various flashing patterns for different urgency situations, including Priority 1 (slower, less urgent), Priority 2 (moderate urgency, faster than Level 1), and Priority 3 (high urgency, faster than Level 1 or 2, and/or utilizing more lights). The lightbars are controlled through a wiring harness, with specific wires corresponding to different functions and flash patterns. They are designed for 12VDC negative ground vehicles.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power: Designed for 12VDC negative ground vehicles only. Reverse polarity can cause serious damage.
  • Wiring: Comes with a 15' 14-conductor cable (plus a shield/drain wire). All wires are color-coded and sized at the correct gauge.
  • Fusing: The red power wire must be connected to the positive terminal of the battery and fused at the battery for 125% of its rated load. All wires and switches should be rated for at least 125% of their maximum current load.
  • LED Lamps: Utilizes high-intensity LED lamps.
  • Compliance: ECE compliant mounting is possible if oriented correctly along all axes of the vehicle. SAE J595 and California Title 13 approved patterns are available, requiring proper configuration for compliance.
  • RFI Mitigation: Features a bare wire (drain/shield/ground) to help eliminate Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). Recommendations include keeping sensitive equipment at least 20" from the lightbar and power cable, avoiding running power wires alongside antenna or radio power wires, and ensuring a good connection of the black ground wire to the negative side of the battery.

Usage Features

  • Modular Design: Ultra low profile modular lightbars.
  • Flash Pattern Selection: Users can select from a variety of warning light patterns (e.g., Flicker, Singleflash, Doubleflash, Tripleflash, Quadflash, Quintflash, ECE Doubleflash, Random, Bounce, Search Lights, Rotator, Sparkle) and traffic director patterns (e.g., Standard, 6-Head TD with End Flash, California Title 13, Snake, Pop).
  • Programming: Basic pattern programming involves connecting the black wire to ground, red wire to power, activating the desired feature, briefly touching and releasing the Pattern Select Wire (red w/green stripe) to +12VDC to scroll through patterns, and disconnecting the function wire from power once the desired pattern is selected. Holding the Pattern Select Wire for specific durations allows "jumping" to shortcut patterns.
  • Advanced Programming: Optional advanced features include phase selection, head enable, changing wire functions, TD/warning pattern cycling, resetting to factory defaults, and Title 13 programming. These require consulting the "Phaser Advanced Programming Manual" available online or contacting customer service.
  • Priority Flashing Modes:
    • Priority 1 Flashing: Slower, less urgent mode, typically used when parked.
    • Priority 2 Flashing: Moderate-urgency situations (e.g., low-speed chase), faster than Level 1, overrides Priority 1 lights.
    • Priority 3 Flashing: High-urgency situations (e.g., high-speed chase), faster than Level 1 or 2, may utilize more lights, overrides both Priority 1 and Priority 2 lights.
  • Switch Control: Main control is through user-supplied switches connected to +12VDC, activating corresponding functions labeled on the Cable Assembly Checklist.

Maintenance Features

  • Warranty: LED Five Year Limited Warranty covering factory defects in material and workmanship for five years from the date of purchase. The owner is responsible for prepaid transportation costs for returning defective items. Exclusions include domes, finish, alterations affecting performance/reliability, or damage from abnormal use/service.
  • Troubleshooting: Contact Customer Service Department for questions or product returns. An RMA number is required before shipping products back for service.
  • Installation Responsibility: The installer is solely responsible for mounting, wiring, and weather-sealing, as well as ensuring secure mounting of the lightbar. The manufacturer assumes no responsibility for installation integrity or secure mounting.
  • Testing: It is crucial to test the lightbar before it is properly fused, as failure to do so will void the warranty.
  • Wiring Harness Replacement: If the provided 15' cable length is insufficient, it is recommended to replace the entire wire harness rather than splicing, to reduce connections and prevent weathering problems.
  • Power Draw: The pack draws a small current (< 0.001A) when the red wire is connected to +12VDC. For extended periods of vehicle inactivity, it is recommended to route the red wire through a switch or ignition-switched relay.
  • Pattern Select Wire: After programming, the red w/green stripe wire should be taped off to prevent accidental connection to +12VDC.

The product is proudly made in the USA and is an ISO 9001:2015 Certified Company.
