Overview

The Star Industries Model 1142 Fixed Length Spreader Bar is a crane attachment designed to safely handle loads by distributing weight evenly. It is fixed at a width of 6 feet and comes equipped with a crane picking point on top. This spreader bar is engineered to meet or exceed the requirements of ASME B30.20-2006 and is classified as Category A and Service Class 0 as defined in ASME BTH-1-2005, indicating its suitability for general lifting applications with a high level of reliability.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Model 1142 Spreader Bar is to provide multiple lifting points for a load, preventing crushing or bending that might occur if the load were lifted from a single point. By spreading the lifting points, it ensures that the load remains stable and balanced during elevation, movement, and lowering. This is particularly useful for wide or irregularly shaped objects that require support across their span. The spreader bar acts as an intermediary between the crane's hook and the load's rigging, ensuring that the lifting forces are applied in a controlled and distributed manner.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: 1142
  • Type: Fixed Length Spreader Bar
  • Width: 6 feet (fixed)
  • Empty Weight: 220 lbs.
  • Rated Load Capacity:
    • Center Hook used alone: 10,000 lbs.
    • Two end Hooks: 10,000 lbs.
    • All three Hooks: 10,000 lbs.
  • Compliance: Meets/exceeds ASME B30.20-2006 and classified as Category A and Service Class 0 per ASME BTH-1-2005.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Installation must be performed by qualified personnel and should refer to the crane operator's manual for specific instructions.
  • Pre-Operation Checks: Before each use, a thorough visual inspection of the attachment is mandatory. This includes checking for broken welds, deformation of the steel tube or other components, cracks in the steel, and ensuring swivel hooks and shackles are complete, in good condition, and that anchor screw pins or bolts are tight. All decals (Empty Weight, Read Before Using, Rated Lift Capacity) must be in place and legible.
  • Operator Qualification: The crane operator must be well-qualified, certified under OSHA requirements, and must have read and understood both the spreader bar manual and the crane operator's manual, including any specific requirements, limitations, or safety procedures.
  • Load Capacity Awareness: Users must be aware that the rated capacities of the spreader bar are for the bar itself and do not reflect the crane's capacity. The weight of the spreader bar (220 lbs.) must be deducted from the crane's lift capacity. It is crucial never to exceed the rated capacities of the spreader bar (except for testing, not exceeding 125% of rated capacity) or the crane. The load rating for slings, chains, or straps used with the spreader must equal or exceed the spreader bar's rating; otherwise, the lowest rated part of the lifting system dictates the maximum load.
  • Safe Operation Practices:
    • Ensure crane rigging is level (vertical) before elevating the load; avoid operating on a side slope.
    • Verify slings, chains, or straps are properly secured, untwisted, and untangled before lifting.
    • The load must be picked up to be equally balanced and hang level.
    • Prevent shock loading by taking up slack slowly.
    • Avoid jerking during lifts; accelerate and decelerate slowly.
    • Do not use the spreader bar to drag or pull a load.
    • Never leave suspended loads unattended.
    • Exercise caution to prevent the load from swinging or contacting obstructions.
    • Keep all personnel clear of suspended loads; maintain a 10-foot rule (no one within 10 feet of the potential fall zone).
    • The crane operator must continuously watch the load when it is in motion.
    • Limit signaling to the crane operator to one person, except for warnings of hazardous situations.
    • Do not raise or carry loads higher than necessary.
    • Never allow anyone to work under a suspended load.
  • Personnel Communication: All personnel involved in the lifting operation must understand the required hand signals and the overall plan.
  • Clear Travel Path: Ensure the travel path is clear of obstructions and that adequate clearance is maintained from all power lines.

Maintenance Features:

  • Visual Inspection: The attachment must be visually inspected before every use to identify any potential damage or wear.
  • Decal Replacement: Replacement decals for "Empty Weight," "Read Before Using," and "Rated Lift Capacity" are available from a Star dealer if they become illegible or missing.
  • Unauthorized Repairs/Modifications: Users are strictly prohibited from making any repairs or modifications to the spreader bar without written authorization from Star Industries. However, replacement of hooks, shackles, decals, and hair-pins does not require authorization.
  • Warranty: Star Products are warranted against defective workmanship and/or materials for a period specified from the date of delivery. For the Model 1142, which is likely covered under "All Star products except as noted below" (non-hydraulic), it would typically fall under a 5-year warranty. This warranty does not cover misuse, abuse, normal wear and tear, or accidental damage.
  • Warranty Claim Procedure: Product defects should be reported to the Star dealer or Star Industries in writing promptly after discovery, preferably with photographs and a written report of circumstances. Warranty claims not made within 30 days of defect discovery will be void. Star Industries will determine if the product needs to be returned for inspection/repair or if authorized repairs can be made elsewhere. A "cost of repair" estimate is required prior to authorization. Reimbursement for authorized repairs will be at the current "Star Warranty Labor Rate" and will not include off-site travel. A Warranty Claim Form must be submitted within 45 days of authorization. A return authorization number is required before returning a product for inspection/warranty.
  • Limitation of Damages: Star's warranty explicitly limits liability to the purchase price of the goods and excludes costs of installation, duty, taxes, or any other charges, as well as direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages or delay. The warranty is void if improper use, operation after discovery of defective/worn parts not approved by Star, or unauthorized alterations/repairs occur. The warranty on repaired or replaced products extends only for the remainder of the original warranty period.
  • Equipment Repairs: For any equipment repairs, users should contact Star Industries directly.
