Overview

This document describes the StarTech.com Travel A/V Adapter: 3-in-1 HDMI® to DisplayPort™, VGA or DVI (HD2DPVGADVI), a versatile solution designed to address the common challenge of connecting a laptop to various display types while traveling.

Function Description

The StarTech.com Travel A/V Adapter is a compact and portable device that allows users to connect an HDMI-enabled source device, such as an Ultrabook™ or laptop computer, to a DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA display. This 3-in-1 adapter eliminates the need to carry multiple adapters, providing a single, convenient solution for diverse display connectivity requirements encountered in different environments, such as conference rooms, hotels, or client offices. The adapter is designed to be a "hard-to-find made easy" solution, simplifying the process of connecting to various display technologies without prior knowledge of the available display type.

Usage Features

The adapter offers straightforward connectivity and operation, ensuring a seamless user experience.

Core Connectivity

The primary function of the adapter is to convert an HDMI signal from a source device into a DisplayPort, VGA, or DVI signal for output to a compatible display. This flexibility is crucial for travelers who may encounter different display interfaces.

Powering the Adapter

To ensure optimal performance, the adapter requires external power. Users should connect the integrated USB power cable to a USB power source whenever the adapter is in operation. This ensures stable signal conversion and reliable output, especially for higher resolutions or longer cable runs.

Output Selection

The adapter supports only one video output at a time. If multiple display cables are connected simultaneously, only one of the video outputs will function. This design simplifies troubleshooting and prevents signal conflicts.

  • DisplayPort or DVI Output: When connecting to a DisplayPort or DVI display, users should ensure that the VGA output button is not pushed in. This configuration directs the signal to the digital DisplayPort or DVI outputs.
  • VGA Output: When connecting to a VGA display, the VGA output button must be pushed in. This action activates the analog VGA output. It is important to note that this adapter will not output digitally encrypted content through the VGA port, which is a common limitation for analog video outputs.

System Requirements

To use the adapter, users need an HDMI-enabled video source device, such as a computer, and a DisplayPort, VGA, or DVI display with the necessary cabling. The adapter itself includes an integrated HDMI input cable and a USB power cable, simplifying setup.

Physical Interface

The adapter features a clear and intuitive layout:

  • Front View:
    • USB power cable (1): This integrated cable is used to provide power to the adapter.
    • HDMI input cable (2): This integrated cable connects to the HDMI output of the source device.
    • DisplayPort output port (3): This port allows connection to a DisplayPort display using a separate DisplayPort cable.
    • DVI output port (4): This port allows connection to a DVI display using a separate DVI cable.
    • VGA output port (5): This port allows connection to a VGA display using a separate VGA cable.
  • Rear View:
    • VGA output button (1): This button is used to toggle the VGA output on or off, as described in the "Output Selection" section.

Portability

The adapter's design emphasizes portability, making it an ideal travel companion. Its compact form factor and integrated cables reduce clutter and simplify packing, ensuring that users are always prepared for various display connectivity scenarios.

Maintenance Features

The StarTech.com Travel A/V Adapter is designed for ease of use and minimal maintenance, focusing on reliability and durability for travel.

General Care

  • Physical Handling: As a travel adapter, it is built to withstand typical travel conditions. However, users should handle it with care to prevent damage to the ports, cables, and internal components. Avoid dropping the adapter or subjecting it to excessive force.
  • Cable Management: The integrated HDMI and USB power cables should be coiled neatly when not in use to prevent tangling, kinking, or damage, which can extend their lifespan.
  • Storage: Store the adapter in a protective pouch or compartment when traveling to shield it from dust, moisture, and physical impacts that could occur in a bag or luggage.

Cleaning

  • Exterior: The exterior of the adapter can be wiped clean with a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive materials, as these can damage the plastic casing or labels.
  • Ports: Ensure that the ports remain free of dust and debris. If necessary, use compressed air to gently clear any obstructions from the DisplayPort, DVI, and VGA output ports. Avoid inserting any objects into the ports that could cause damage to the internal pins.

Software/Firmware

This adapter is a plug-and-play device and typically does not require any software installations or firmware updates. Its functionality is hardware-based, simplifying its use and eliminating the need for ongoing software maintenance.

Troubleshooting

In case of connectivity issues, users should first verify the following:

  1. Power Connection: Ensure the USB power cable is securely connected to a reliable USB power source.
  2. Cable Connections: Confirm that all video cables (HDMI input and DisplayPort/DVI/VGA output) are firmly connected to both the adapter and the respective source and display devices.
  3. Output Selection: Check the position of the VGA output button to ensure it matches the desired display type (pushed in for VGA, not pushed in for DisplayPort/DVI).
  4. Single Output: Remember that only one video output can be active at a time. Disconnect any unused display cables.
  5. Source Device: Verify that the source device (laptop, etc.) is configured to output video via HDMI and that its display settings (resolution, refresh rate) are compatible with the connected display.
  6. Display Device: Ensure the display device is powered on and set to the correct input source.
