Overview

The World of Warcraft® Wireless MMO Mouse is a specialized gaming peripheral designed for an immersive and responsive experience, particularly within the World of Warcraft universe. Developed jointly by Blizzard Entertainment and SteelSeries, this mouse integrates advanced features for optimal gameplay, including programmable buttons, customizable settings, and wireless connectivity.

Function Description:

The primary function of this device is to serve as a high-performance gaming mouse, offering precision, speed, and extensive customization options tailored for Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games like World of Warcraft. It operates both wirelessly and wired, providing flexibility in setup. The mouse features a rechargeable battery, eliminating the need for frequent battery replacements. Its design incorporates a unique aesthetic inspired by World of Warcraft, complete with illuminated elements.

A key aspect of its functionality is the integration with the SteelSeries Engine software suite. This software unlocks the full potential of the mouse, allowing users to configure various hardware settings and program its numerous buttons. Without the SteelSeries Engine, many of the advanced features, such as programmable buttons and detailed sensitivity adjustments, would not be accessible.

The mouse is equipped with a CPI (Counts per Inch) adjustment system, which directly impacts its sensitivity. Users can switch between preset CPI settings on-the-fly using a dedicated CPI Button, allowing for quick adaptation to different in-game scenarios or personal preferences. The CPI LED indicates which sensitivity setting is currently active.

For wireless operation, the mouse communicates with a Base Station connected to the computer. This Base Station also serves as a charging dock for the mouse. Alternatively, the mouse can be connected directly to the computer via a micro-USB to USB cable for wired use and charging.

Usage Features:

Wireless and Wired Connectivity:

The mouse offers dual connectivity options. For wireless use, the Base Station must be connected to the computer via a micro-USB to USB cable. The mouse is then turned on using a switch on its underside. A small blue light on the left side of the mouse blinks periodically to confirm successful pairing and wireless operation. For a wired connection, simply connect the mouse directly to the computer using the micro-USB to USB cable. It's important to note that wireless functionality requires the Base Station to be connected to the computer.

Charging the Mouse:

The mouse utilizes a rechargeable battery. When the battery is low, a small red light on the left side of the mouse will quickly blink. To recharge, users have two options:

  1. Via Base Station: Place the mouse into the Base Station. For optimal charging speed, it is recommended to turn the mouse off using the switch on its underside.
  2. Via Wired Connection: Connect the mouse to the computer using the micro-USB to USB cable. During charging, the small light on the left side will glow a steady red. Once fully charged, the light will blink red on and off. If the mouse remains on during a wired charge, the light will glow steady red while charging and blink red on and off when fully charged. If the mouse is off but in the Base Station or wired, there will be no light indication of charging status. To prevent battery depletion during critical gameplay, it's advisable to leave the mouse in the Base Station between uses.

Resyncing:

If the mouse and Base Station lose their pairing, they can be re-synced. This involves pressing and holding a button on the underside of the Base Station for approximately 3 seconds until its lights blink. Then, the mouse is turned on, and a button next to its on/off switch is pressed and held for about 3 seconds. Upon release, the small light on the left side of the mouse will quickly blink blue, indicating that pairing is in progress. After a few seconds, the mouse and Base Station should be paired, restoring wireless functionality.

On-the-Fly CPI Adjustments:

The mouse's sensitivity, or CPI (Counts per Inch), can be adjusted directly on the device. A triangular button located under the scroll wheel, known as the CPI Button, allows users to switch between two preset CPI settings. The CPI LED, a small round light between the CPI Button and the scroll wheel, indicates which setting is active (on or off). These CPI settings are fully customizable through the SteelSeries Engine software.

Software Installation and Configuration:

To unlock the mouse's full potential, the SteelSeries Engine software must be installed. After plugging in the mouse and allowing the computer to recognize it, the Engine software can be downloaded from the SteelSeries website. The installer guides users through the setup process. It is crucial to keep the mouse plugged in during installation to ensure proper functionality. The SteelSeries Engine provides access to various settings:

  • Battery Status: The software displays a battery icon with white bars indicating the charge level. Low or red bars signify a low battery, and a lightning bolt indicates active charging.
  • Counts Per Inch (CPI): Users can precisely adjust the mouse's sensitivity in increments of 100, ranging from 100 to 8200 CPI. Higher CPI means the cursor moves further with less physical mouse movement.
  • Polling Rate: This setting determines how frequently the computer samples the mouse for information. Available rates include 125, 250, 500, and 1000 Hertz (Hz). Increasing the polling rate can improve cursor accuracy and tracking but may require more system resources.
  • ExactLift: This feature controls the lift distance—how high the mouse must be raised before it stops tracking movement. Finding the right balance is crucial; a setting that's too high might cause accidental cursor movement when repositioning the mouse, while one that's too low might lead to tracking loss.
  • Illumination: The mouse's lighting can be customized with two variables: Intensity (brightness) and Pulsation (fade speed). Setting Pulsation to "Steady" will keep the illumination constantly on.

In-Game Integration (World of Warcraft®):

The mouse is optimized for World of Warcraft®, allowing all 10 buttons to be recognized as extended Mouse Button presses within the game. This simplifies binding spells, abilities, and macros. To enable in-game integration:

  1. Launch SteelSeries Engine.
  2. Enable "In-game mode" under the mouse image and save. This ensures extended buttons only function when bound in-game. To configure within World of Warcraft®:
  3. Log into World of Warcraft® with a character.
  4. Access the 'Game Menu' (Esc or menu bar icon).
  5. Go to 'Interface' -> 'Mouse' options.
  6. Check 'Detect World of Warcraft Gaming Mouse'.
  7. Click "Okay" and "Return to game". To bind buttons in-game:
  8. Log into World of Warcraft® with a character.
  9. Access the 'Game Menu' -> 'Key Bindings'.
  10. Scroll to 'Right Action Bar commands'.
  11. Click an 'Action Bar Slot' button and press the corresponding mouse button.
  12. Repeat for all desired hotbar slots.
  13. Click "Okay" and "Return to game". After binding, spells and abilities from the spellbook (P) or macros from the macro panel (/m) can be dragged to the bound action bar slots.

Troubleshooting:

The user guide provides solutions for common issues:

  • Windows Vista/7 Settings: For potential problems on these operating systems, users are directed to a SteelSeries FAQ page for specific settings adjustments.
  • Failed Firmware Upgrade: If the mouse blinks but doesn't work after a failed firmware update (indicating bootloader mode), users are advised to finish installing the SteelSeries Engine and launch the Firmware Update Tool. Multiple retries or USB port switching may be necessary to successfully flash the firmware.
  • Extended Buttons Not Working Outside WoW: If "In-Game Mode" is enabled in the SteelSeries Engine, custom actions cannot be assigned to extended buttons in other applications. Disabling "In-Game Mode" resolves this.
  • SteelSeries Engine Not Recognizing Mouse: If the Engine displays "Please connect a SteelSeries Engine - compatible device to start" despite the mouse being connected, it might be a recognition issue from switching USB ports. Solutions include trying different USB ports, restarting the Engine, or reinstalling the Engine after plugging the mouse into the problematic port. Manual driver updates via Device Manager are also suggested.
  • Purple Side Light: A purple side LED indicates an overlap between the blue (wireless status) and red (low battery/charging status) lights, meaning the battery is low while the mouse is also searching for the Base Station.
  • Keyboard Setup Assistant on Mac: The Keyboard Setup Assistant may appear on Mac OS X when the mouse is plugged in because the OS identifies HID devices with extended buttons as irregular keyboards. Users should simply click the 'X' button to exit the assistant.

The manual emphasizes referring to the SteelSeries support website (faq.steelseries.com) for more detailed troubleshooting and information.
