Do you have a question about the Stiles Ironwood DSP2500 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Ironwood DSP2500 is a double-surface planer designed and manufactured for planing two sides of a workpiece in a single operation. It is intended for use by authorized, well-trained operators only. The machine features a pressure-finger conveyor that secures workpieces firmly and uniformly, maintaining straightness and preventing movement during operation.

Function Description:

The DSP2500 efficiently planes both sides of a workpiece. The lower cutterhead flattens the workpiece, while the upper cutterhead planes it to the desired thickness. Workpieces are fed into the machine by a pressure-finger conveyor, which ensures a firm grip for heavy-duty cutting. The feed speed is variable, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of workpiece materials and requirements. The machine is equipped with hardened chrome-plated and precision-ground tables, which contribute to smooth feeding, quiet operation, and maximum wear resistance.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Max Working Width: 25 inches (635mm)
  • Max Working Thickness: 8 inches (203mm)
  • Min Working Thickness: 6/16 inches (9.5mm)
  • Min Length of Cut: 12 1/2 inches (317mm)
  • Upper Cutterhead Motor: 25 hp
  • Lower Cutterhead Motor: 20 hp
  • Feeding Cutterhead Motor: 5 hp
  • Table Rise/Fall Motor: 1/2 hp
  • Variable Feed Speed: 26-78 fpm (8-24 m/min)
  • Cutterhead Speed: 5,000 rpm
  • Cutterhead Diameter: 5 inches (126mm)
  • Cutter Knives per Head: 96 carbide inserts (6 rows of 16 inserts each)
  • Max Stock Removal: 1/2 inch (14mm) total / 1/4 inch (7mm) per head
  • Electrical: 230v / 460v (3 phase)
  • Amperage: 125 amps @ 230v / 62.5 amps @ 460v
  • Dust Port Diameter: 2 ports, 6 inches each (150mm)
  • Dust Extraction Requirements: 1,600 cfm @ 4,500 feet/min
  • Machine Dimensions (W x L x H): 105" x 45" x 68" (2667mm x 1145mm x 1725mm)
  • Gross Weight: 7000 lbs (3175 kg)

Usage Features:

  • Cutterheads: Two heavy-duty spiral cutterheads, each with six rows of 16 carbide inserts, provide a high chip-rate removal rate, superior surface finishing, and reduced noise levels.
  • Table Elevation: A 1/2-hp motor raises and lowers the table. The feed mechanism also has powered elevation for quick and easy set-ups.
  • Control Panel: Conveniently located on the infeed side, the control panel features a digital controller with keypad entry for table positioning, a digital thickness readout, LED display (inch/mm), current meters, and lighted power switches for controls.
  • Feed Speed Control: A 5 hp feed motor with variable speed control (23-65 fpm) is managed by a frequency inverter, allowing adjustment via a speed selector knob.
  • Micro-switch: An innovative micro-switch enables quick thickness settings.
  • Safety Features: The machine includes an emergency stop switch, and operators are advised to wear ear and eye protection. Safety guards must always be in place and in good working order. Warning labels are affixed to the machine to ensure safe operation.
  • Workpiece Handling: The pressure-finger conveyor ensures workpieces are held firmly and uniformly. Operators should inspect workpieces for knots, holes, or foreign materials to avoid kickback.
  • Adjustments:
    • Workpiece Thickness: The upper cutterhead height can be adjusted automatically via the digital controller or manually using a raise/lower switch. The lower cutterhead position can be adjusted with a handwheel.
    • Feed Conveyor Chain Tension: Maintained by adjusting a nut clockwise to increase tension or counterclockwise to decrease it.
    • Table Rollers: Adjusted to project about 0.1-0.2mm above the table surface using adjustment screws.
    • Hold-Down Pressure: Adjusted via a lever to control pressure on the workpiece.
    • Rear Pressure Plate: Positioned 0.3mm lower than the workpiece, adjusted via an adjustment screw and lock nut.
    • Outfeed Pressure Rollers: Load pressure adjusted via an adjustment nut and lock nut.

Maintenance Features:

  • Lubrication: Regular lubrication is required at various points, including cutterhead bearings, feed conveyor bearings, elevation unit bearings, and guideways, with specified lubricants and intervals (e.g., 720 hrs for cutterhead bearings, 240 hrs for feed conveyor bearings).
  • Inspection: Daily checks include cutterheads, chains, emergency stop, safety guards, and roller tension. Monthly checks are required for the electrical cabinet/system.
  • Periodic Cleaning: Regular vacuuming of the machine's interior is crucial to prevent wood shavings, dust, and debris from accumulating on moving parts.
  • V-Belt Tension Adjustment: V-belt tension on the cutterhead motors may loosen over time. The normal tension is 8mm deflection when pressed on its center position. Adjustments are made by loosening clamps/nuts and turning levers/screws.
  • Guideway Clearance Adjustment: Over time, clearance on the guideways may develop due to wear on the gib. This is adjusted by loosening a lock nut and tightening an adjustment screw.
  • Infeed Table Taper Gib Clearance Adjustment: Similar to guideways, clearance on the infeed table taper gib can be adjusted by loosening lock nuts and tightening an adjustment screw.
  • Oiler Adjustment: The oiler for the feed conveyor chain requires adjustment to ensure proper lubrication.
  • Tooling Maintenance: Planing knives are very sharp and require careful handling. They should be inspected before each operation, rotated when dull, and replaced when both sides are dull. Stiles Parts Dept. provides replacements.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting section for machine operation and the digital controller unit, providing possible causes and solutions for common issues.
