Usage Features
The manual outlines detailed operating procedures to ensure efficient and safe use of the concrete mixer.
Before Starting:
- Safety Chain Installation: A 12 ft. safety chain and two connecting links are provided. The chain is threaded through keyhole slots in the front post and attached to the towing vehicle.
- Oil Levels and Lubrication: Users must check oil levels in the engine and engine reduction unit before starting. Running the engine without oil voids the warranty. Trunnion bearings also need to be greased.
- Hardware Check: All hardware on the mixer and engine/motor should be checked and tightened according to the torque charts.
- Fuel: Gasoline engines require clean gasoline from a safety can. Mixing oil with gasoline is prohibited. Electric models require proper size grounded extension cords, free from damage.
Starting the Engine/Motor:
- Gasoline Engine Cold Start: Open the fuel valve, set throttle halfway, apply choke, and pull the starter rope. Once started, open the choke and adjust throttle. Operate at full throttle under load.
- Gasoline Engine Hot Start: Open fuel valve, set throttle halfway, no choke needed. Pull starter rope.
- Electric Motors: Use a proper size (3-wire grounded) extension cord, ensuring it's not routed through standing water and connections are tight. Turn motor on.
Operation:
- The drum should operate between 20-25 RPMs.
- For best results, add water first, then gravel, then cement, and finally sand. This sequence helps keep the drum clean and maintains good tumbling action.
- To discharge concrete, firmly grasp the handwheel and push up on the tilt handle to release the tilt brake. The brake must be fully engaged after discharge and before reloading.
- The engine cowl must be closed and latched during operation.
Towing:
- Before towing, check local laws.
- Ensure the hitch is securely attached to the towing vehicle and the tow pole is fully extended and bolted to the mixer.
- Safety chains must be properly attached, crossing under the tow pole with 4-5 inches of vertical slack.
- Tires should be in good condition and properly inflated: 4.80 x 12 @ 60 P.S.I. for 65CM & 75CM; 6.50 x 13 @ 35 P.S.I. for 95CM & 105CM.
- The drum must be rotated straight down and the tilt brake engaged to lock it in place.
- Maximum towing speed is 55 m.p.h. (90 km/hr), reduced for poor road conditions or inclement weather.
- Warning: Do not tow with the drum in the dump position, as this can cause instability and tipping.
Maintenance Features
The manual provides a maintenance schedule to ensure the machine's reliability and service life.
Daily:
- Engine: Check oil levels in the engine and engine reduction unit. Consult the engine manual for specific oil recommendations and change frequencies.
Weekly:
- Idler Shaft Pillow Block Bearings (Electric Drive Models): Grease these bearings.
- Diesel Gearbox: Check oil level (should be visible at the pipe plug) and lubricate with SAE30W to SAE80W oil.
- Chain and Sprockets (Chain Drive Models): Lubricate with a few drips of SAE 30 motor oil or spray chain lube.
Monthly:
- Trunnions: Grease in two places.
- Drum Spindle: Grease in two places.
Yearly:
- Wheel Hubs: Repack four tapered roller bearings and replace wheel seals. Install washer and nut, torque to 20 ft. lbs., back off one turn, then torque to 7 ft. lbs., back off to the first slot, and insert a cotter key.
General Maintenance Notes:
- Cowl: Do not operate the mixer with the cowl removed.
- Pinion and Ring Gear: Do NOT lubricate these components as they will collect abrasive materials and accelerate wear.
- Grease Type: Use any Grade #1 lithium base grease for applications requiring grease.
- Gearbox Gasket Kit: P/N 23197.
Cleaning:
- Thoroughly clean the mixer inside and out at the end of each day.
- The drum can be scoured by operating it for 2 minutes with a gravel and water mixture, then discharged and hosed down.
- Before cleaning, shut off the engine/motor and disconnect the spark plug wire or electric cord.
- Spray the mixer with water before the mix dries. Scrape out dried mix as necessary, but do not beat on the drum with shovels or hammers to avoid damage.
- Warning: Never pour or spray water on the engine or motor. Never put hands or any object into the drum while the engine or motor is running. Always disconnect the spark plug wire or electric cord when cleaning inside the drum.
Safety Decals:
- The manual lists several safety decals that should be replaced if damaged or missing: Warning Decal (SN-92) P/N 55011, Safety Instruction Decal (SN-67A) P/N 55046, Warning Decal (SN-8) P/N 55127, and Safety Chain Decal (Front Post, SN-66) P/N 55121.
The manual also includes a "CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING" on page 19, though the content of this warning is not provided in the extracted pages.
