DOUBLE LINE OPERATION
Models SA7000AC, SA7015AC, SA12000AC and
SA12015AC are factory equipped with a pulley
block and hook and 50’ of cable for double line
operation. This increases the pulling capacity of the
winch as shown, however, care must be taken to
allow adequate motor cooling. Note that with dou-
ble line, a pull of 25’ requires reeling in 50’ of cable.
For intermittent use only. Ratings at left are based
on 10’ pull. For longer pulls motor cooling periods
must be allowed.
MAXIMUM CONTINUOUS RUN TIME 3 MINUTES
CAUTION: CONTINUOUS RUNNING IN
EXCESS OF 3 MINUTES WILL DAMAGE WINCH
MOTOR.

Overview

The StrongArm Electric Winch, available in models SA5000AC, SA5015AC, SA7000AC, SA7015AC, SA9000AC, SA9015AC, SA12000AC, and SA12015AC, is a 120 Volt AC powered device designed for pulling loads. It is explicitly stated not to be used as a hoist for lifting, supporting, or transporting people or loads over areas where people could be present, emphasizing its function as a pulling tool rather than a lifting one.

Function Description:

The StrongArm Electric Winch is designed to pull loads using a cable wound around a reel, powered by an electric motor. It offers both single and double line operation, with double line operation significantly increasing pulling capacity for certain models. The winch is controlled by a switch for "in" (loading) and "out" (unloading) directions, and an automatic stop/lock feature engages when the switch returns to the OFF position. A clutch lever provides a means for releasing a load without power, allowing for controlled speed or free-wheeling to manually remove cable. An auxiliary handle is included for emergency manual operation in case of power failure.

Important Technical Specifications:

The winch models are categorized by their dead weight capacity and cable length on the reel.

  • Dead Weight Capacity (LBS.):
    • SA5000AC & SA5015AC: Up to 1,200 lbs (single line)
    • SA7000AC & SA7015AC: Up to 1,800 lbs (double line)
    • SA9000AC & SA9015AC: Up to 2,700 lbs (single line)
    • SA12000AC & SA12015AC: Up to 4,000 lbs (double line) These capacities are based on 10' pull with 15' of cable on the reel and a 10% rolling friction factor. Capacities adjust based on the length of cable on the reel, as illustrated by a graph showing decreasing capacity with increasing cable length.
  • Rolling Load Capacity (LBS. and KG): The manual provides a detailed table for maximum rolling load capacity at various incline percentages (5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 50%, 70%). For example, the SA12000AC/SA12015AC can handle 26,700 lbs (12,111 kg) at a 5% (3°) incline, decreasing to 6,100 lbs (2,767 kg) at a 70% (35°) incline.
  • Approximate Load Speed (FT./MIN.): Speed varies significantly between models and depends on whether the reel is full or empty, and under no load or full load. For instance, the SA5000AC/SA5015AC operates at 35 ft./min. (no load, full reel) down to 9 ft./min. (full load, empty reel). The SA12000AC/SA12015AC is slower, ranging from 9 ft./min. (no load, full reel) to 2 ft./min. (full load, empty reel).
  • Motor Type: 120 Volt AC electric motor.
  • Continuous Run Time: Maximum recommended continuous run time is 3 minutes. Exceeding this can damage the winch motor.
  • Cable: Equipped with high-quality aircraft cable. Specific models (SA7000AC, SA7015AC, SA12000AC, SA12015AC) are factory equipped with 50' of cable for double line operation. Cable attachment methods vary by model, with some winding over the top of the drum and others under the drum.

Usage Features:

  • Mounting: The winch must be securely attached to a structural member or frame capable of sustaining loads exceeding the winch's capacity. It can be fastened with three 1/2" bolts, nuts, washers, and lock washers, or optionally using keyhole slots in the base with quick-mount shoulder studs and a 3/8" bolt for secure positioning.
  • Double Line Operation: Available on SA7000AC, SA7015AC, SA12000AC, and SA12015AC models, utilizing a pulley block and hook to increase pulling capacity. This mode requires reeling in double the cable length for a given pull distance (e.g., 50' of cable for a 25' pull).
  • Clutch Operation: A spring-loaded clutch lever allows for controlled release of a load without power or free-wheeling for manual cable removal. The lever returns to the engaged position when released but can remain in free-wheel if rotated completely forward.
  • Emergency Handle: Provided for manual operation during power failures. It engages with the drive shaft and can be cranked in either direction with the clutch in the engaged position (or free-wheel for easier cranking). For SA9000AC, SA9015AC, SA12000AC, and SA12015AC models, the handle has a safety clip that re-engages the clutch if control is lost during clockwise cranking.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always read instructions carefully before installation, operation, or service.
    • Never exceed rated winch load.
    • Keep at least three turns of cable on the reel.
    • Do not use vehicle pulling power to increase capacity.
    • Place a blanket or rug over the cable during winching to minimize whipping in case of breakage.
    • Secure the load properly after winching; do not rely on the winch to support it.
    • Remove the auxiliary handle when not in use.
    • Use with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) when outdoors.
    • Use only with a three-pronged grounded outlet.
    • Avoid operating in rain, wet conditions, or while standing in water.
    • Block vehicle wheels when pulling a load.
    • Maintain control of speed when releasing a load with the clutch.
    • Never force the clutch lever.
    • Pay attention to winch sound and load tension to avoid overload, as there is no circuit breaker overload protection.

Maintenance Features:

  • Periodic Inspection: Recommended annually, or more frequently in adverse conditions (e.g., saltwater, dusty environments).
  • Cable Inspection and Replacement: Inspect for kinks, frays, or abnormal stiffness. Replace at the first sign of damage. Instructions are provided for removing the clutch handle, cover, and rope clamp to replace the cable.
  • Lubrication: Periodically lubricate the cable with light oil. With the cover removed, grease all gears on the inside of the winch base and apply a drop of oil to all bearings in the base. Sparingly oil bearings in the clutch mechanism and a drop of oil on the roller clutch (do not use grease in the roller clutch).
  • Component Checks:
    • Inspect the gear train and drive shafts for wear or loose bearing fits.
    • Ensure the clutch mechanism, brake pads, and brake disc are clean and oil-free.
    • Check roller clutch operation: disc should turn clockwise with the motor shaft but not counterclockwise.
    • Verify all nuts, bolts, and retaining rings are tight and secure.
    • Check the power cord for wear or frays.
  • Clutch Adjustment: If the clutch is slipping, it can be adjusted in ten-degree increments by removing the clutch spring, rotating the O-ring, expanding the ring, lifting the spring keeper, rotating the keeper clockwise to the next serration, and reinstalling the O-ring.
  • Pulley Block and Hook Assembly (for SA7000AC, SA7015AC, SA12000AC, SA12015AC): Check that the pulley rotates freely on the bronze pulley spacer. Occasional greasing is recommended.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual directs users to the Dutton-Lainson website for a troubleshooting manual, allowing diagnosis of problems based on winch model and symptoms like "Cable Damage" or "Motor runs but winch fails to pull cable."
