Overview

The Strongway 12 Ton Hydraulic Shop Press (Item# 46270) is a robust piece of equipment designed for a wide range of pressing, bending, straightening, and forming operations in automotive, truck, implement, fleet, and industrial repair shops. Its primary function is to apply significant force to workpieces, facilitating tasks such as the installation and removal of bearings (alternator, power steering pump, axle, transmission), seals, and u-joints.

Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 12 Ton
  • Bed Opening: 3-1/8 inch
  • Work Range: 0-24 inch
  • Stroke Length: 6-7/8 inch
  • Inside Bed Dimensions (L x W): 16-5/16 x 3-1/8 inch
  • Overall Dimensions (L x W x H): 20-7/8 x 19-11/16 x 48-7/16 inch
  • Safe Operating Temperature: 40°F – 105°F (4°C - 41°C)

Usage Features:

The shop press requires careful assembly and adherence to safety guidelines before operation. The assembly process involves attaching rail sections to posts and cross members, securing the upper crossbeam, and installing the hydraulic bottle jack and middle bolster. The design allows for the middle bolster to suspend between the left and right frame posts, providing adjustable working height. The 12-ton hydraulic bottle jack is placed between the middle bolster and the upper crossbeam, with its position adjusted by nuts. Lower bolster pins and the lower bolster are then inserted, followed by the bolster plates on the lower bolster.

Before first use, a critical "System Air Purge Procedure" must be performed to remove any air introduced into the hydraulic system during shipment. This involves turning the release valve counterclockwise, pumping the handle several times, then closing the release valve and pumping until the ram reaches maximum height. Trapped air is released by carefully pinching the oil fill plug. The ram is then lowered, and the release valve is closed to check for proper pump action. This ensures the hydraulic system operates correctly and safely.

When operating the press, the bed frame pins are inserted to the desired height, and the bed frame is lowered onto them. Bolster plates are placed on the bed frame as needed. The workpiece must be positioned securely on the bed frame or pressing block, taking precautions to prevent it from falling. The release valve is closed firmly by turning it clockwise using the notched end of the jack handle. The jack handle is then inserted into its socket, and the ram is pumped until it nears the workpiece. Proper center-loading of the ram and workpiece is crucial to avoid off-center loads. The load is applied by pumping the handle, ensuring not to exceed the rated capacity. The workpiece should be stabilized to prevent it from falling when the load is removed. Once the work is completed, the release valve is slowly turned counter-clockwise in small increments until the ram is free from the workpiece and fully retracted. The workpiece can then be cautiously removed.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Strongway shop press.

  • Inspection: Before each use, the press should be carefully inspected for damage, wear, broken or missing parts (e.g., pins), and to ensure all components function correctly.
  • Binding: If the product binds under a load, a higher capacity equipment should be used to safely lower the load. After un-binding, the equipment must be cleaned, lubricated, and tested. Rust, dirt, or worn parts can cause binding and should be addressed.
  • Cleaning: Moving parts obstructed by debris should be cleaned with a cleaning solvent or degreaser. Existing rust should be removed with a penetrating lubricant.
  • Lubrication: The equipment requires proper lubrication for safe operation and to prevent damage. Pivot points should receive a periodic coating of light lubricating oil to ensure free movement of pump piston linkages. Saddle extension threads, if requiring lubrication, should be cleaned with a dry cloth and then treated with a drop of bearing grease, distributed evenly. Lubrication frequency depends on usage: monthly for light duty and weekly for heavy/constant use. A high-grade light penetrating oil or lubricating spray should be used. Abrasive materials should never be used on surfaces.
  • Rust Prevention: Rams and pump plungers on the power unit assemblies should be checked daily for signs of rust or corrosion. If visible, they should be cleaned as needed, especially when extended without a load.
  • Hydraulic Fluid Management: The hydraulic cylinder assembly should be kept approximately 80% full of hydraulic fluid. To add oil, the jack is positioned on level ground, the saddle is lowered, and the oil plug is removed. Oil is filled until just beneath the lower rim of the fill hole, ensuring dirt and other materials are kept clear. The oil plug is then replaced, and the air purge procedure is performed.
  • Replacing Jack Oil: To replace the oil, the jack is positioned on level ground, the saddle is lowered, and the release valve is opened (4 full turns). The oil fill plug is removed, and the jack is turned on its side to drain the old oil. Hydraulic fluid must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations. After draining, the jack is returned to level ground, the saddle is lowered, and new oil is filled to the correct level. The oil plug is replaced, and the air purge procedure is performed.
  • Important Fluid Warnings: Only anti-foaming, good-grade hydraulic jack oil should be used. Motor oil, hydraulic brake fluid, alcohol, glycerine, detergent, or dirty oil must never be used or mixed with hydraulic fluid. Improper fluid can cause premature failure of the jack and a sudden loss of load.
  • Storage: After use, the ram should be fully retracted, the handle placed in the upright position, and the press stored in a dry, indoor location. If stored outdoors, all parts must be lubricated before and after use.

The product is covered by a limited warranty from Northern Tool and Equipment Company, Inc. for one year from the date of purchase, covering material defects and workmanship under normal wear and tear. The warranty is void if the product is modified, misused, or improperly maintained.
