Overview

The Stryten Energy Li510 is a lithium-ion battery system designed for material handling applications, serving as a direct replacement for existing lead-acid and lithium-ion systems. It is self-contained and offers advanced features for safety, performance, and ease of use.

Function Description

The Li510 battery system provides power for material handling vehicles. It incorporates a Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors various parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature to ensure safe and efficient operation. The battery communicates its status to the vehicle via a CAN bus and to the operator through an external Stryten Energy display. Key functions include deep discharge protection, automatic charge cycle control, and a warning/alarm system to alert operators of potential issues.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Battery Chemistry: NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt)
  • Operating Conditions/Storage Temperature: -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C)
  • Maximum Charge Rate: Not to exceed 0.7 C (70 Amps per 100Ah capacity)
  • Communication: CAN Open Communication (optional customized communication available)
  • Display: Curtis Engage II or Opus A3 (external display options)
  • Voltage and Capacity: See battery label for specific values.
  • Charger Recommendation: Stryten Energy M-Series X-3 and X-7 chargers are recommended for best performance; ELI series chargers are also approved.
  • Undervoltage Alarm Thresholds:
    • 24V: 20.3 V
    • 36V: 29.0 V
    • 48V: 40.6 V
    • 72V: 58.0 V
    • 80V: 60.9 V
    • 96V: 81.2 V
  • Overvoltage Alarm Thresholds:
    • 24V: 29.8 V
    • 36V: 42.5 V
    • 48V: 59.5 V
    • 72V: 85.0 V
    • 80V: 89.3 V
    • 96V: 119.0 V
  • Internal Battery Temperature Alarms (Discharge):
    • Below -4°F (-20°C): Alarm (3 beeps/sec for 15 seconds), then disconnect.
    • Reaches 140°F (60°C): Alarm (3 beeps/sec for 15 seconds), then disconnect.
    • Derating message transmitted at 131°F (55°C).
  • Internal Battery Temperature Alarms (Charge):
    • Charging forbidden below 32°F (0°C).
    • Reaches 122°F (50°C): Alarm (3 beeps/sec for 15 seconds), then disconnect.
    • Charge current derating occurs at 113°F (45°C).

Usage Features

  • Quick Start: To activate, press the ON/OFF button for one second. The button will flash green rapidly during power-up, then steadily flash green once per second in normal operation. A flashing red indicates a warning or failure.
  • Deep Discharge Protection: When the charge level is low, the buzzer beeps once per second, indicating the need for immediate charging. If the battery becomes deeply discharged, the buzzer will beep rapidly (3 times per second) for 15 seconds before the battery turns off. A reset button allows a single attempt to drive the vehicle to the charger before permanent shutdown. Deep discharge should be avoided to prevent sudden vehicle stops and potential damage.
  • Charging: The Li510 must be charged with a Stryten Energy certified battery charger. It is recommended to charge at every opportunity (e.g., breaks) to extend battery life and increase productivity. The battery system features "EZ Charge" with two separate connectors for the truck and charger, offering internal automatic control and drive-away protection. After charging, the vehicle can be immediately returned to service without a rest or cooling phase.
  • Warnings and Alarms: A warning buzzer (one beep per second) activates for conditions such as under/over voltage, under/over current, under/over temperature, and communication errors. If the condition worsens, the alarm frequency increases to three beeps per second, and the BMS will shut down the battery after 15 seconds.
  • On/Off Button LED Indicators:
    • Standby mode: LED Green Off, LED Red Off.
    • Active (no alarm/warning): LED Green Once per second, LED Red Off.
    • Warning: LED Green Off, LED Red Once per second.
    • Alarms: LED Green Off, LED Red Three per second.
    • Button press (<5s to reset warnings/alarms): LED Green On as long as button is pressed, LED Red Off.
    • Button press (>5s to move from active to standby): LED Green Off, LED Red On as long as button is pressed.
    • Button press (in standby to active): LED Green On as long as button is pressed, LED Red Off.
  • Battery Discharge Indicator (BDI) Configuration: If the forklift uses a BDI, it should be configured for NMC chemistry or with parameters that match the Li510's State of Charge (SOC) display. A table is provided to assist with BDI setup for various nominal voltages.
  • External Display: An optional advanced display (Curtis Engage II or Opus A3) provides detailed information including voltage, current, temperature, and SOC. The display shows the SOC from 100% to 0%. A flashing LED indicates low SOC, prompting the operator to charge. If ignored, the battery automatically shuts down at 0% SOC. A flashing wrench symbol indicates a battery fault, requiring service contact.

Maintenance Features

  • General Maintenance: Do not open the battery; only authorized Stryten Energy service personnel are permitted to do so, otherwise, the warranty will be void. Before any inspection, the battery must be turned off and unplugged from both the charger and the vehicle.
  • Cable and Connector Inspection: Regularly verify the condition of all external cables and connections. Ensure the connector to the forklift is inserted tightly and that power cables are not rubbing on metal surfaces.
  • Periodic Full Charging: To balance the cells, the battery should be fully charged to 100% SOC at least once per week, and ideally once per day. The charger screen will indicate "Complete" when fully charged.
  • Connector Cleaning: Ensure the blue coding key is properly installed in the charger connector. Clean the interior mating surfaces of the 2 power pins and 4 aux pins on the charger connector with 95% ethanol or 91% isopropyl alcohol and swabs. This should be done at least every six months in clean facilities, or more often in facilities with high airborne material.
  • Storage: Before storage, charge the battery to 50% SOC, power it off, and disconnect it from both the vehicle and the charger. The Li510 has a very low self-discharge rate and can be stored for up to 12 months before requiring a recharge. Store batteries in a dry and frost-free room within the specified operating/storage temperature range.
  • Cleaning: Never clean the system or parts with a vapor jet or spray water, as dirt and water can cause major damage. Use only a moist and clean cotton cloth for cleaning. Avoid chlorine-based disinfectant wipe-downs.
  • Recycling: Battery recycling may be required in accordance with local laws. Contact Stryten Energy or regulatory authorities for information. Do not include the battery with lead-acid battery recycling.
