Tape
Transport
The
preferred
operatlng
posltlon
for the tape transport
mechardsm
is
horizontal.
However, lt can
also
be mounted ln a sloplng
posltlon
wtth the rear ralsed but the angle should not be
greater
than
3 0c).
The
recorder remalns
fully
operatlonal
wlth the tape deck opened. In thls
posltlon
the
plnch-wheel
wlll drop by lts own
weight
agalnst
the capstan shaft. Thls wlll
cause
a sllght
tenslon on the
threaded tape lf
the capstan motor ls runnlng. However,
wow
and
flutter measurements
should
not
be
taken with the tape-deck opened.
All sub-assemblles
are equlpped wlth
plugs
and sockets.
Consequently, they can be replaced
ln
the mlnlmum of tlme, by undolng a
few
screws.
The
very low wow ard
flutter flgures
of
the
STUDER
J-37
are
due to
a
number of features of the
tape transport. The small distances
between the tape drlven ldler and the heads, arrl between the
heads and
the
capstan,
help to
prevent
undeslrable
longitudlnal oscillations
In
the tape
and
brlng
the
resonance frequensy well
above
the
audible
range. It was therefore
possible
to omlt any tape
drtven ldlers
between the heads, which
mlght
have urdesirable slde-effects.
Head Block
The removable head block has a
cast
alumlnlum
houslng. The high lmpedance heads are mounted
ln thls castlng ln such a way that adjustlng around
thelr three
axes
ls
posslble.
To malntaln even
wear, the head
faces
are approx.
1/10 mm
(
.004"
)
narrower than the tape. The dlmenslons of
the heads and the sceenlng are chosen so as
to malntaln
a
good
low frequency response. The
record
and
replay heads
are
mounted ln
p-metal
screenlng cans to
prevent
plck-up
of stray
mag-
netlc ftelds. The tape enters ard leaves the head-block
vla tape
guides.
The
guldes
are
made
of
a
very hard and wear-resistant
metal. The
lnner clearance
of these
guldes
ls f"
(
25.4 mm
)
whlch
coresponds
to the nomlnal tape wldth.
The small
dlstances between the stablllslng ldler,
the heads,
and
the capstan ensure exceptlon-
ally
low flutter flgures.
The connestlons
from the
head block
to the recorder
are
made vta TUCHEL contact strlps whlch
are
well
screened
inslde the head-block.
To remove the head-block cover
plate,
a coin or screwdrlver should
be inserted lnto the slot on
the rear of the head-block
ard
glven
a slight
twlst. Thls
glves
access
to
the three screws whlch
hold the head-block to the recorder. The head-block can be
removed by urdolng these three
screws.
The heads
are
flxed to the head-block by means of 4
screws.
