Attention:
The
tape tenslon balance is a delicate
piece
of
preclslon
englneerlng
and should
be hardled
accordlngly.

Stabilislng IdIer
The ldler
wheel is
situated
between the tape
tenslon
balance and
the
head-block. It ls coupled
to a large
fly-wheel urderneath the deck-plate with
a
taper
flt.
Durlng
fast wlnd
and in the
stop
posltion,
the fly-wheel is magnetlcally de-coupled. It ls only drlven vla the taper durlng
"re-
cord" and
"playback".
Thls
avoids
tape damage due
to
excessive strain.
When
the deck mecha-
nism is
propped
up, the coupllng of the
fly-wheel
is
not reliable. Therefore, no wow
and
flutter
measurements should be taken in thls
position.
The fly-wheel
should
not be
allowed
to rub
on
anythlng, ln
partlcular
cables
that may have
slipped
out of
posltion.
A sllght rattle of the fly-
wheel durlng switchlng is of
no
consequence.

Tape Llft Mechanlsm
The
tape lifting lever
is sltuated
between the erase head and the record head,
It
is
actuated by
two electro-magnets
ard
has two operatlng
posltions:
Durlng
fast wird
(
high speed and
reduced
speed
),
the tape
ls
llfted
off
all
the
heads.
In
the
stop
position,
the tape
remains
in contact with the heads
and can there-
fore be monitored. Monltoring during fast wind is
possible
by operatlng the
Ieft
hand knurled wheel.
In order to brlng the
tape
into contact
wlth
the heads
gently,
the
return
of the tape liftlng lever
is delayed by
means of
a dash-pot. The degree
of damplng
can be adjusted by means of the red
knurled wheel
at
the back of the dash-pot cyllnder. Two small hoLes can be opened more or less
by turning the wheel, thus
alterlng
the damping the the cylinder. This wheel,
however, should
only be turned by
a
few degrees.
Furthermore,
the
distance of the
tape from the replay
head in the half llfted
posltlon (
monitoring
durlng
fast
wlnd
)
can be adjusted. A tape wlth a I kc/s tone should be used for this
purpose.
First Ioosen the Iock nut on the
connecting
rod of the right
hand solenoid of the tape lift mecha-
nism. Swltch lnto
playback
and
turn the hexagonal section of the
solenold-end of the
rod
so that
the tape
Just
remains
ln contact
with the head, when the
left hand knurled wheel
is
operated.
