Overview

The Studiomaster PA Series power amplifiers are dual-channel professional audio devices designed for robust and reliable performance in various sound reinforcement applications. These amplifiers are built with Studiomaster's renowned technology, offering high reliability, solid stability, and superb acoustic characteristics.

Function Description

The primary function of the PA Series amplifiers is to amplify audio signals for loudspeakers. They operate in three selectable modes: Stereo, Mono, and Bridge, providing flexibility for different sound system configurations. In Stereo mode, both channels operate independently, allowing for separate amplification of two distinct audio signals to two loudspeaker loads. Mono mode combines the inputs to provide similar outputs to two separate loudspeaker loads, useful for driving multiple speakers with a single mono signal. Bridge mode combines the power output of both channels to drive a single, higher-power loudspeaker load, typically used for subwoofers.

The amplifiers feature balanced/unbalanced input signal connectivity through parallel XLR and 6.3mm (1/4") stereo phone jacks for each channel, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of audio sources. Output termination is provided via 4-way Speakon connectors for each channel, facilitating secure and efficient connection to loudspeakers.

An essential feature is the built-in limiter circuit, which protects both the amplifier and connected speakers from being overdriven by high input signal levels. This circuit prevents distortion of the output level when it exceeds its maximum, safeguarding full-range speakers and their high-tone piezo drivers from harmonic signals resulting from over-steering. For subwoofer applications, the limiter can be switched off to achieve an "extra punch."

The amplifiers also incorporate a Low-cut switch, which filters low frequencies from the input signal at 20 Hz. This protects speaker cones from unwanted and inaudible low frequencies, improving overall sound clarity and speaker longevity. An HF Protection switch guards the amplifier against high-amplitude, high-frequency signals at the output, reducing amplifier power to protect internal circuitry and speakers if such signals persist for more than 10-15 seconds. This protection has no effect on normal music playback.

A Ground/Lift switch allows the input connector and chassis/circuit ground to be separated, addressing earth loop problems and reducing hum. An external earth terminal is also provided for additional ground connection, if needed.

Usage Features

The PA Series amplifiers are designed for ease of use and integration into professional audio setups. They feature a rugged 19" rack-mountable chassis, making them suitable for installation in standard equipment racks. The front panel includes a master switch for powering the unit on and off, and a power ON indicator light that confirms correct channel operation. Individual volume controls for each channel allow for precise adjustment of output levels.

Indicator LEDs on the front panel provide crucial operational feedback:

  • Signal indicator (Green LED): Lights up to indicate the presence of a signal in the final stage, typically with signals higher than -20dB.
  • Limiter-peak indicator (Red LED): Activates when the internal limiter is engaged to prevent clipping, indicating that maximum amplification has been reached. Continuous illumination suggests excessive signal input.
  • Mute indicator (Yellow LED): Lights up to indicate a muted channel status, which can occur due to a 3-second switch-on delay, continuous voltage on the channel output, short circuit, or thermal protection of the channel or transformer.
  • Thermal protection indicator (Red LED): Illuminates to signal excessive temperature. When tripped, the amplifier remains in mute status until normal operating temperature is restored, indicating overheating of both channels and the transformer.

Rear panel controls include a configuration switch to select between Mono, Stereo, and Bridge modes, offering versatile application options. A sensitivity switch allows selection between 0.775V or 1.2V input sensitivity, depending on the source. The limiter switch can be toggled ON or OFF, as described above.

For safety, a circuit breaker (MCP) is included to prevent amplifier failure from sudden surges or continuous high current supply.

Maintenance Features

The PA Series amplifiers are built for durability and long-term performance, with several features contributing to their maintainability and protection:

  • Extensive Protection Circuitry: The amplifiers are equipped with comprehensive protection against temperature (both transistor and transformer), overload, over voltage, DC offset, RFI (Radio Frequency Interference), and output short circuits. This circuitry also safeguards against variations in AC supply due to genset mains fluctuations.
  • Air Intake Grill: Located at the front, this grill facilitates air intake for cooling. Regular cleaning of the air filter and ensuring the grill is not obstructed are crucial for maintaining optimal operating temperatures and preventing overheating. The cooling system utilizes 2 or 4 variable-speed high CFM fans (depending on the model) to dissipate heat effectively.
  • DC Fuses: Specific DC fuses are provided for different models (e.g., 2 x 12A for PA 1.5/2.0, 2 x 20A for PA 3.0, etc.) to protect the power amplifier PCB from excessive current.
  • Serviceability: While the units are designed with no user-serviceable parts inside, the manual emphasizes referring all servicing to qualified service personnel. This ensures that any internal inspection, maintenance, or repair is performed correctly, preserving the amplifier's integrity and warranty.
  • Robust Construction: The rugged 19" rack-mountable chassis is designed to withstand the demands of professional use, contributing to the device's overall longevity.

The design prioritizes stable operation and protection against common electrical and thermal issues, minimizing the need for frequent maintenance and extending the product's lifespan.
