(6) Driver monitoring system
With more older and younger drivers on the road, collisions caused by driver inattentiveness
(looking to the side or falling asleep) are increasing. Therefore, more modern vehicles are being
equipped with advanced safety technology such as EyeSight.
While advanced safety technology is useful for reducing the task load imposed on the driver, it can
also be a cause of inattention, due to drivers carelessly thinking that the "advanced safety
technology will keep the car from being involved in any collisions".
To combat this, we have developed the driver monitoring system, that serves as the vehicle's "eyes"
within the passenger compartment. The vehicle monitors the driver's status and provides alerts at
the appropriate times.
䙟 Location
The components of the driver monitoring system are located in the upper center
portion of the instrument panel.
䙟Principles of the driver monitoring system
An infrared LED is projected on the driver and the camera captures images. The captured
images are used to calculate the driver's face orientation, closing and opening of the eyes, and
facial characteristics.
