Usage Features:

  • Vent-Free Operation: Eliminates the need for a chimney or vent, offering greater flexibility in installation locations.
  • Decorative Purpose: Primarily intended for aesthetic enhancement, providing the look and feel of a traditional fireplace.
  • Compatibility: Designed to be used with approved vent-free gas log heaters. Users must ensure the gas log heater's BTU/hr rating does not exceed the firebox's maximum recommended input.
  • Safety Screens and Hood: The firebox must be operated with the provided firebox screen and hood in place, and screens must be closed before running the installed gas log heater to ensure safe and efficient operation. Replacement hoods are available (J4353 for 50", J4354 for 42", J4355 for 36").
  • Optional Accessories:
    • Mosaic Masonry Brick Kits: Available in various colors and patterns (Warm Red, Ivory, Midnight, Slate Grey) and styles (Full Stacked, Split Stacked, Herr Full, Herr Split) for 36", 42", and 50" models, allowing for customization of the firebox interior. These panels are installed after the firebox is placed in its permanent location.
    • Outside Air Kits: Optional kits (AK4F for floor installation, AK4 for sidewall installation) can be purchased to provide combustion and ventilation air from outside the home, which may be required in certain installations or for improved air quality.
    • Cabinet Mantels: The firebox can be installed with a cabinet mantel, which can be purchased from a retailer or custom-built.
  • Installation Flexibility: Can be installed against a wall or directly on the floor.
  • Clearance Requirements: Specific minimum clearances to combustible materials must be maintained around the firebox, mantel, and ceiling to ensure safety. Detailed diagrams and tables are provided in the manual for these clearances.
  • Gas Line Installation: Requires proper gas piping to the firebox location, with an access hole for the gas line that will be covered by the cabinet mantel. All gas piping and connections must be tested for leaks by a qualified service person.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: The manual advises keeping the firebox area clear and free from combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors and liquids.
  • Professional Servicing: Installation and servicing of gas hearth products should be performed by professionals certified by the National Fireplace Institute (NFI) as NFI Gas Specialists.
  • Brick Panel Installation: If mosaic masonry brick panels are used, they should be installed after the firebox is in its permanent location. Grouting instructions are provided, emphasizing the need to allow 72 hours for the grout to cure before operating the fireplace.
  • Part Replacement: Replacement parts should be ordered through an IHP distributor or dealer, using the model number, serial number, part number, description, quantity, and installation date. Only manufacturer-approved parts should be used.
  • Inspection: Regular inspection of the firebox and gas log heater is recommended to ensure proper operation and identify any potential issues.
  • No Unauthorized Modifications: Any changes to the firebox or its controls can be dangerous and are not recommended. Using unapproved blower inserts, heat exchanger inserts, or other accessories is prohibited.

Safety Warnings:

The manual contains numerous safety warnings, including:

  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: A significant danger, potentially leading to death. Proper ventilation and adherence to installation guidelines are crucial.
  • Hot Surfaces: The firebox front and screen become very hot during operation and remain hot for a time after shutdown. Children and adults should be kept away to prevent burns or clothing ignition.
  • Combustible Materials: Do not place clothing or other flammable materials on or near the appliance. Maintain specified clearances to combustibles.
  • Drafts and Flame Patterns: Avoid fans blowing directly into the firebox or any drafts that alter burner flame patterns, as this can cause sooting.
  • Lifting Hazard: The firebox is heavy, and single-person lifting can cause injury. Assistance should be used when moving or lifting the unit.
  • Unapproved Parts: Only masonry brick panels and other parts approved by IHP should be used. Substitute materials can lead to poor performance and safety hazards.
  • Ventilation Requirements: The firebox requires a specific volume of indoor combustion air. In some cases, additional permanent openings or an outside air kit may be necessary to ensure adequate ventilation, especially in tightly constructed homes.
  • Gas Leaks: All gas piping and connections must be tested for leaks by a qualified service person. Do not operate the appliance if a leak is detected.
