Overview

This document provides instructions for installing and maintaining a Sure Fit Wheelchair Cover and Cushion, Style #83140, designed to fit standard manual wheelchairs. The product is patent pending.

Function Description:

The Sure Fit Wheelchair Cover and Cushion is a multi-component accessory designed to enhance the comfort and aesthetics of a standard manual wheelchair. It consists of four main pieces: a foam cushion, a cushion cover, a frame cover, and a seat cover. The primary function is to provide additional padding and a refreshed appearance for the wheelchair, while also offering practical features for ease of use and maintenance. The foam cushion offers customizable comfort, allowing users to choose between a softer memory foam side or a more supportive blue layer. The covers are designed to fit securely onto the wheelchair frame and seat using a system of gripper strips, ensuring they stay in place during use. The design also accounts for the wheelchair's folding mechanism, allowing the frame and seat covers to remain on the chair during folding, provided the cushion is removed.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Style Number: 83140
  • Compatibility: Fits standard manual wheelchairs, with or without footrest extensions.
  • Components:
    • Foam Cushion: Features a white memory foam side for comfort and a blue layer for support.
    • Cushion Cover: Quilted, designed to encase the foam cushion.
    • Frame Cover: Designed to cover the wheelchair frame, including armrests and back. It has handle openings at the top back and incorporates gripper strips for secure attachment.
    • Seat Cover: Designed to cover the wheelchair seat, also featuring gripper strips for attachment.
  • Attachment Mechanism: Utilizes multiple sets of "gripper strips" for secure attachment of the seat cover to the frame cover, and the cushion to the seat. The frame cover also uses gripper strips to secure itself to the armrests and frame.
  • Folding Compatibility: The frame cover and seat cover can remain on the wheelchair during folding, but the cushion must be removed prior to folding. All gripper strips should be re-secured after folding.

Usage Features:

  • Customizable Comfort: The foam cushion offers two distinct comfort levels. Users can place the white memory foam face up for more comfort or the blue layer face up for more support, depending on their preference.
  • Secure Attachment: The system of gripper strips ensures that all cover components are firmly attached to the wheelchair, preventing shifting or slippage during use. This includes securing the seat cover to the frame cover, the cushion to the seat, and the frame cover to the armrests and frame.
  • Easy Installation: The instructions detail a step-by-step process for installing each component.
    • Cushion Assembly: The foam cushion, kept in its plastic poly bag, is inserted into the quilted cushion cover, then the bag is removed, and the cover is zipped shut.
    • Frame Cover Installation: The frame cover is laid flat, handle openings are identified, and it's placed over the back of the wheelchair, with handles inserted through the openings. Gripper strips on the arm covers are then wrapped around the arm frame (both back and front sets) and pressed firmly to secure. Fabric arm covers are positioned over fasteners, and skirts are allowed to fall between the frame and wheels.
    • Seat Cover and Cushion Installation: Four flaps with gripper strips inside the frame cover are used. The two back flaps are tucked behind the seat. The seat cover is placed on the seat, aligning its gripper strips with those on the frame cover and pressing them together. Gripper strips on the seat cover's skirt are paired with strips inside the front of the frame cover's skirt and pressed firmly. Back flaps are pulled up onto the top of the seat cover. Finally, the covered cushion is placed on the chair with the zipper facing the back, and its gripper strips are aligned to secure it to the seat.
  • Folding Convenience: The design allows the frame and seat covers to stay on the wheelchair when it is folded, simplifying the process and reducing the need for complete removal and reinstallation. However, the cushion must be removed before folding.
  • Safety Precaution: Users are reminded to "Always apply brakes of wheel chair before applying cover" to ensure stability during installation.
  • Pre-Installation Recommendation: Familiarity with manual wheelchairs is recommended prior to applying the cover.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cushion Cleaning: The foam cushion can be spot cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent. It should never be submerged in water, machine washed, or dry cleaned. It is crucial to allow the cushion to dry completely before reinserting it into the cover to prevent moisture-related issues.
  • Cushion Reinsertion Tip: For easier reinsertion into the cover, the cushion can be folded in half.
  • Ongoing Security: After folding the wheelchair, it is important to "Always secure all gripper strips" to maintain the integrity and fit of the covers.
  • Customer Support: A dedicated phone number (800-914-7298) is provided for additional assistance, indicating a commitment to post-purchase support.
