Overview

The Sureguard ScareCrow-360° is a motion-activated animal deterrent designed to humanely keep unwanted animals out of a specific area. It offers an environmentally friendly and safe alternative to chemical repellents. The device employs three distinct repelling actions that operate horizontally in all directions, providing 360-degree coverage. This ensures that the deterrent is active regardless of the direction from which animals approach.

Function Description:

The ScareCrow-360° utilizes a combination of blue sentinel lights, motion sensors, ultrasonic sound, and white flashing lights to deter animals.

  1. Blue Sentinel Lights: These lights flash continuously, once per second, emitting light over 360 degrees. They are designed to deter wary animals over long distances at night, ranging from 50m to 200m. The flashing light also serves as a visual indicator during daylight hours that the device is switched ON. The blue sentinel light can be switched off if not appropriate for a particular setting.

  2. Motion Sensors: The device is equipped with three PIR (Passive Infrared) motion sensors, providing full 360-degree protection. These sensors detect the body heat of animals. When motion is detected within their range, they trigger a 15-second burst of ultrasonic sound and activate the white flashing lights. The sensors are most sensitive when animals walk across their viewing area rather than directly towards them. It's important to avoid placing the device near foliage that might cause false triggering during windy daylight hours, especially when not in Night-Mode.

  3. Ultrasonic Sound: The ScareCrow-360° features three wide-band ultrasonic speakers that produce high-frequency sounds audible to animals. The device varies the frequencies emitted to target the unique hearing ranges of many different animals. It's important to note that the hearing range of birds is typically too low to hear ultrasonic sounds, so while the flashing lights might offer some deterrent effect, this device is not specifically recommended for birds. All three speakers activate simultaneously with motion detection.

  4. White Flashing Lights: Six white flashing lights are activated simultaneously by motion within the range of any of the three PIR motion sensors. The combined flashing pattern of the white lights and blue sentinel lights is designed to simulate an up-down motion of the device, which animals are particularly wary of at night.

Usage Features:

The ScareCrow-360° offers several user-selectable operating modes and features to optimize its effectiveness for different situations and animal types:

  • Operating Modes: Users can select between two operating modes:

    • 24-Hour Mode: In this mode, the device is active continuously, with motion sensors and lights operating both day and night. This is the default mode when the device is first switched ON.
    • Night-Mode: In Night-Mode, the motion sensors are inactive during daylight hours. A green LED shines through one of the sensor windows to indicate that the device is in Night-Mode. This mode is particularly recommended for deterring nocturnal animals like possums and rodents.
  • Adjustable Sentinel Light: The blue sentinel light can be switched ON or OFF by a quick press and release of the Power Button. Sureguard generally recommends keeping the sentinel light active for optimal deterrence.

  • Placement and Height Adjustment: The device comes with a sturdy 3-piece metal post, allowing users to adjust the working height of the motion sensors to match the height of the target animal. For maximum height, all three pieces can be used. For non-soil areas, the metal post can be placed into a heavy, soil-filled pot. The device also has a flat base, enabling installation on stable, flat surfaces at various heights without the post. For example, it can be placed at ground level to sense rodents or on an elevated object for other animals. It is crucial to ensure the device is placed firmly to prevent false triggering from wind and to avoid placing it where it can sit in water.

  • Animal-Specific Recommendations: The manual provides guidance for deterring various animals:

    • Cats & Dogs: Visiting pets should learn to stay away quickly. Pet cats and dogs may require more time to adapt, and the deterrent should remain in place.
    • Deer, Wallabies, & Kangaroos: Always keep the Sentinel Light operating and the device active continually.
    • Foxes: Use Night-Mode if visitations occur at night and always keep the Sentinel Light operating. For protecting poultry, multiple devices may be needed to ensure sentinel light visibility from all approach directions.
    • Possums: Use Night-Mode for best results and keep the device active continually. The motion sensor should be at the same height as the possum (e.g., along a fence, up a tree, or at ground level).
    • Rabbits: Keep the device active continually. Shorten the support post for appropriate motion sensor height and use the Sentinel Light if possible.
    • Rodents: Use Night-Mode and place the device in a dry location at ground level.
  • Persistence: Sureguard recommends leaving the device switched ON even after animals stop visiting to send a strong message that the deterrent is always present.

Maintenance Features:

The ScareCrow-360° is designed with convenient power and charging options:

  • Solar Powered: The device is solar-powered with an internal Lithium Rechargeable Battery. For optimal charging, it should be placed in full sun, away from any shadowing.

  • USB Charging Port: An external USB charging port is provided. Before first use, the internal battery should be fully charged using a 5-volt USB charger and the supplied cable. The USB charger can also be used if solar power is low due to many cloudy days.

  • Low Battery Indication: A low battery is indicated in three ways:

    1. A Red LED shining through one of the sensor windows.
    2. The White LEDs being dimly lit.
    3. The device failing to switch ON.
  • Weather Resistance: The enclosure is weather-resistant to an IP44 rating, ensuring durability in various outdoor conditions.

The Sureguard ScareCrow-360° aims to provide a reliable and humane solution for animal deterrence, with flexible settings and power options to suit different user needs and environments.
