Overview

This manual describes the installation, usage, and maintenance of Swanstone Shower Wall Kits and Panels. These products are designed to create durable and aesthetically pleasing shower enclosures.

Function Description

Swanstone Shower Wall Kits and Panels are designed to provide a waterproof and easy-to-clean surface for shower enclosures. They are installed over a prepared sub-wall, such as moisture-resistant drywall, marine-grade plywood, or cement board, to create a seamless and protective barrier against water. The panels are bonded to the wall surface using 100% clear silicone sealant. The kits can include flat panels, corner moldings, and soap dishes, allowing for various configurations and a finished look. The installation process involves careful measurement, cutting, and dry-fitting of panels, followed by the application of silicone sealant and temporary bracing to ensure proper adhesion. Optional apron strips can be added for extended coverage beyond the shower base.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Material: Swanstone products are made from a solid surface material that is stain and abrasion resistant.
  • Sealant: Requires 100% clear silicone sealant for bonding to walls. The recommended application rate is one tube of sealant per 1440 square inches (10 square feet), with an average shower requiring 4 to 10 tubes. GE brand 100% silicone is NOT recommended.
  • Panel Dimensions (Examples from Kit Contents):
    • Flat Panels: Various sizes indicated by model numbers like SS-6296, MSMK-7230, MSMK-8430, MSMK-9630, etc.

  • Weight: The box containing a Swanstone kit can weigh in excess of 280 pounds, requiring appropriate lifting devices and multiple people for movement.
  • Installation Temperature: Panels should be installed at temperatures not less than 65°F (18°C) and not in areas where the temperature may drop below freezing (32°F / 0°C).
  • Wall Requirements: Walls must be solid, plumb, and square within 1/8" of true.
  • Sub-Wall Material: Recommended 1/2" (13 mm) moisture-resistant drywall, marine-grade plywood, or concrete board.
  • Tools Required: 100% clear silicone sealant, color-coordinated silicone, caulking gun, circular saw (60-80 tooth carbide blade), saber saw (bi-metal blade, 14 teeth per inch), drill (3/8" drill bit), hole saw (for faucet/shower head), tape measure, masking tape (2" wide), level, compass or dividers (for scribing), clean paper towels or shop towels, 2x4 lumber (for bracing), industrial grade hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional), denatured alcohol.

Usage Features

  • Versatile Installation: Swanstone panels can be installed over various existing surfaces including sheetrock, greenboard, cementboard, wood, plaster, cement/concrete, and old tile (ceramic, if solidly adhered; plastic tiles must be removed). Wallpaper must be removed.
  • Customizable Fit: Panels can be cut to fit specific shower dimensions, including openings for faucets and shower heads. Scribing techniques allow for precise fitting against uneven walls.
  • Corner Soap Dish: Optional corner-mount soap dishes can be stacked or placed in opposite corners, providing convenient storage. A recommended height of at least 43" from the shower floor is suggested for mounting.
  • Corner Molding: Optional corner moldings can be installed to cover gaps between panels, providing a clean finish, especially if panels are not scribed for a tight fit.
  • Bracing for Adhesion: Temporary bracing (2x4 lumber) is required for 24 hours after installation to ensure proper silicone curing and panel adhesion to the walls.
  • Aesthetic Options: Available in flat, subway tile, or square tile patterns. For tile patterns, panels must be installed in the same direction (vertically or horizontally) to ensure grout lines align.

Maintenance Features

  • Stain and Abrasion Resistant: Swanstone products are designed to resist stains and abrasions, making them durable for daily use.
  • Easy Day-To-Day Cleanup: Surfaces can be wiped clean with warm water, a soft cloth, and normal household detergents or cleansers (e.g., Fantastic, Formula 409, Clorox Clean-up, Handy Andy, Mr. Clean, Dow Scrubbing Bubbles, Lysol Foaming Tub and Tile Cleaner, Top Job, Lestoil). Cleaners should be rinsed off within five minutes of application.
  • Abrasive Cleaners for Luster: Occasional scrubbing with household abrasive cleaners helps maintain the original luster of the product.
  • Caulking Joint Inspection: Monthly inspection of caulking joints is recommended for damage or signs of separation. Cracks should be reapplied with color-matched 100% silicone sealant to prevent water leakage. Failure to inspect and repair caulking joints will void the warranty.
  • Warranty:
    • Residential Limited Lifetime Warranty: Covers defects in materials or workmanship for the original purchaser in residential applications, as long as the product remains in its original place of installation and is installed and maintained according to instructions. Does not cover labor or other costs of removal/installation, or incidental/consequential damages.
    • Commercial 30-Year Limited Warranty: Applies to the original purchaser in commercial applications under the same conditions as the residential warranty.
  • Repair: Information on surface repair is contained within the manual, though specific details are not provided in the "Maintenance & Surface Repair" section summary.
