Overview

The Orbiter Swing Set, model PB 8330, is a residential playground designed for children aged 2 to 10 years, with a maximum combined weight capacity of 345 pounds. It features a three-position swing beam, accommodating two swing belts and one trapeze bar. Each swing position has a maximum recommended swinging weight capacity of 100 lbs, with a maximum swing beam load of 300 lbs. The swing set is intended for private backyard use only and should not be used in public settings.

Technical Specifications:

  • Overall Dimensions: The swing set occupies a safety zone of 21'-5" in length and 26'-8" in width. The height of the swing beam is 7'-0".

    • Two Swings with Chains (04-0002)
    • Four Anchor Its and four Anchor It Straps.
  • Hardware: The assembly requires a variety of fasteners, including carriage bolts (3/8" x 5-1/2", 3/8" x 5", 3/8" x 4"), lag screws (3/8" x 2-1/2", 5/16" x 1-1/2"), panhead screws (1/4" x 2-1/2", #8 x 3/4"), flat washers (3/8", 5/16", 1/4"), lock washers (3/8", 1/4"), torque washers (3/8"), lock nuts (3/8"), and bolt caps.

Usage Features:

  • Safety Guidelines: The manual emphasizes several safety precautions, including adult supervision, instructing children not to walk near moving parts, avoiding twisting swing chains, sitting properly on swings, and not getting off equipment while in motion.
  • Clothing Restrictions: Children should not wear loose-fitting clothing, drawstrings, scarves, or other items that could cause strangulation.
  • Footwear: Well-fitting, full-foot enclosing footwear is recommended; clogs, flip-flops, and sandals are inappropriate.
  • Helmet Removal: Children should remove bike or sports helmets before playing.
  • Surface Conditions: Avoid climbing when equipment is wet due to slippery surfaces.
  • Obstruction Clearance: The playset should be placed on level ground, at least six feet from any obstructions, and clear of overhead obstructions.
  • Anchoring: The equipment must be fully erected, bolts tightened, and anchored to the ground before use.
  • Swing Height Adjustment: The height of the trapeze bar and swing belts can be adjusted by clipping the chains onto different links. All swing belts must maintain a minimum clearance of 8 inches from the protective surfacing.
  • Protective Surfacing: The manual strongly recommends installing shock-absorbing protective surfacing under and around the play equipment to a depth suitable for the equipment height (80" maximum fall height). Loose-fill materials like wood mulch/chips, engineered wood fiber, shredded/recycled rubber mulch, sand, or pea gravel are suggested, with specific depth requirements (9 inches for equipment up to 8 feet high, 6 inches for equipment less than 4 feet high). Poured-in-place surfaces or pre-manufactured rubber tiles are also options, but typically require professional installation. Surfacing should extend at least 6 feet in all directions from the equipment. For to-fro swings, surfacing should extend a distance equal to twice the height of the top bar from which the swing is suspended, both in front and behind. For tire swings, surfacing should extend in a circle with a radius equal to the height of the suspending chain or rope plus 6 feet.

Maintenance Features:

  • Periodic Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial for safe enjoyment.
  • Beginning of Play Season:
    • Tighten all hardware.
    • Lubricate all metallic moving parts.
    • Check protective coverings on bolts, pipes, edges, and corners, replacing if loose, cracked, or missing.
    • Inspect moving parts (swing seats, ropes, cables, chains) for wear, rust, or deterioration, replacing as needed.
    • Check metal parts for rust, sand, and repaint with nonleaded paint if found.
    • Inspect wood members for deterioration and splinters, sand down splinters, and replace deteriorating members.
    • Reinstall plastic parts removed for cold season.
    • Rake and check depth of loose-fill protective surfacing materials, replacing as necessary to maintain appropriate depth.
  • Twice a Month During Play Season:
    • Tighten all hardware.
    • Check protective coverings on bolts, pipes, edges, and corners, replacing if loose, cracked, or missing.
    • Rake and check depth of loose-fill protective surfacing materials.
  • Once a Month During Play Season:
    • Lubricate all metallic moving parts.
    • Check moving parts (swing seats, ropes, cables, chains) for wear, rust, or deterioration, replacing as needed.
  • End of Play Season (or below 10°F):
    • Remove plastic swing seats, tents, sandbox cover, tire swing, slide, and other specified items, storing indoors or discontinuing use.
    • Rake and check depth of loose-fill protective surfacing materials.
  • Warning Labels: Owners are responsible for maintaining the legibility of warning labels.
  • Wood Preservation: Applying a sealer or stain every two to three years (or more often depending on climate) is recommended to minimize natural defects like warping, splitting, checking, twisting, shrinkage, and swelling.
  • Disposal: When disposing of the playset, ensure all components are handled according to local waste ordinances. Disassemble the equipment to prevent hazards. Do not burn preserved wood.
