Product Features
The features of the SybronEndo Vitality Scanner 2006 are
presented below in the form of a series of statements describing the
function of the instrument in a step by step manner. Each statement
is followed by a paragraph with related information.
1. When the probe makes contact with a tooth, the Vitality
Scanner tur
ns on automatically. The Vitality Scanner will turn
on automatically as soon as you estab
lish a good electrical contact
between the probe tip and a tooth.
An indicator light on the probe
w
and lights up when the Vitality Scanner turns on. The automatic
turn-on feature prevents you from getting a false diagnosis due to
poor electrical contact and it eliminates the possibility of jolting
your patient by suddenly establishing good contact after initially
having had poor contact between the probe and the tooth. The Vitality
Scanner will not turn on when you test a tooth with a porcelain
crown–a situation in which electrical pulp testing in general becomes
invalid. An optional Mini-Tip is available which allows you access to
the tooth below the crown margin. You may also test metallic fillings.
Be cautious, however, with the readings you may receive from metallic
fillings since the resistance of a metallic filling is considerably lower
than that of natural tooth material, resulting in lower response levels.
2. After the unit turns on, the intensity of the electrical stimulus
will increase automaticall
y
. The rate of increase in the strength of
the stimulus can be controlled b
y a panel w
heel.
The voltage output
is generated electronically so that the level rises slowly in the beginning
of the test and more quickly at the end.
3. When y
our patient senses the stimulus, lift the probe from
the tooth and read the stimulus level on the display. The patient
will percei
v
e the stimulation as a pulsating pressure, w
armth, or
tingling which slowly builds in strength unlike the sudden jolt common
with other pulptesters. The display will stop incrementing when you
break the contact between the probe and the tooth. The output voltage
will reset to its lowest value after a delay of two seconds, but the
display will continue to show the reading until you begin testing
another tooth. If you reestablish contact within the delay interval, the
pulptesting sequence will continue without resetting. This way you
can avoid accidentally resetting the Vitality Scanner if you momentarily
lose contact between the probe and the tooth.
4. The display will automatically reset when you move to
another tooth. The automatic reset feature allows you to quickly
and easil
y test a multitude of teeth simply by moving the probe from
one tooth to the next. The output stimulus level resets automatically
after each test. Unlike other pulptesters, our unit’s reset feature prevents
you from accidentally shocking a patient if you forget to reset your
unit manually.
5. The top value on the response scale is 80. A top value of 80
w
as chosen because it gives you higher resolution in your results. If
you reach a value of 80 in a test, the indicator light on the probe wand
will start flashing. Once the light begins to flash, the testing sequence
is complete.
6. False negative and false positive indications can be detected
and a
v
oided. A f
alse negative indication occurs when a healthy
tooth does not respond to maximum stimulus, i.e. a reading of 80. It
can be caused b
y moisture on the surf
ace of the tooth or b
y a metallic
filling making contact with periodontal tissue. Other conditions that
can cause a false negative reading are severe calcification of the
pulpal tissue or other conditions that result in the degradation of the
neural response.
