Overview

The SYSTRON DONNER TL8-3 Series is a stabilized triple power supply designed for laboratory and systems applications, particularly those utilizing IC circuitry. It provides flexible and dependable sources of DC power with high reliability.

Function Description

The primary function of the TL8-3 Series power supplies is to transform and rectify an AC input into a well-regulated, stable, and adjustable DC output. It offers three independent outputs, allowing simultaneous power delivery to various circuits, such as a typical IC (digital or analog) breadboard and two additional auxiliary power sources. Output voltages and currents can be independently monitored.

The unit operates in a constant voltage mode, maintaining a preset voltage across the output terminals as long as the load does not exceed the rated output current. It also features automatic current limiting for short-circuit protection, which limits the maximum output current to approximately 110% of the rated output. In the event of a short circuit, the output voltage drops to zero and returns to its previous level upon removal of the short circuit.

An optional Automatic Overvoltage (OV) Protection feature (available for output A only) prevents the output voltage from exceeding a programmed threshold. This protection can be internally adjusted via an access slot in the cover.

Important Technical Specifications

  • 220 VAC ± 10%; 47-65 Hz

Output:

  • Triple Floating; isolated from ground, 300 VDC max.
  • Output A: 0 to +8 VDC, 3 ampere (rating reduces to 2 ampere at 0 VDC).
  • Output B: 0 to +32 VDC, 1 ampere (rating reduces to 0.5 ampere at 0 VDC).
  • Output C: 0 to -32 VDC at 1 ampere (rating reduces to 0.5 ampere at 0 VDC).
  • All outputs are referenced to a common return electrically isolated from chassis ground.
  • Regulation, Line: 0.02% or 2 mV* for 200-240 VAC line change, at any output within specifications.
  • Regulation, Load: 0.02% or 5 mV* (no load to full load, at any output within specifications).
  • Ripple: 500 µV RMS; 3 mV p-p (10 MHz).
  • Stability: 0.05% or 10 mV* for 8 hours after warm-up (measured at constant line voltage, load, and ambient temperature).
  • Temperature Coefficient: (0.02% + 400 µV)/°C.
  • Temperature Range: 0 °C to +40 °C.
  • Recovery Time: 50 microseconds to within 0.05% or 15 mV* of output voltage, for 80% step change in rated load (0.2 load to full load).
  • Short Circuit Protection: Automatic Electronic Current Limiting.
  • AC Power Input Protection: Fuse.
  • Voltage Adjustment Range: Continuously adjustable vernier controls.
  • *Whichever is greater.
  • At maximum line voltage condition, the total output current should not exceed 80% of total allowable current.

Physical Specifications:

  • Size: 7 7/8" W × 4 7/8" H × 12 9/16" D
  • Weight: 16 lbs.

Usage Features

Front Panel Controls:

  • AC POWER: Toggle switch to control input power.
  • VOLTAGE ADJUST (Coarse/Fine): Potentiometers to adjust voltage output with a resolution of 1 mV on the fine control.
  • METER SELECT (V, I): Rotary switch (2 positions) to control the function of the output meters (Volts or Amps).
  • Metering: Three independent dual-range meters (combination Volt/Ammeters) allow simultaneous monitoring of voltages and current for each output.
  • Overload Indicator: A front panel lamp indicates an overload condition on any of the three outputs.

Terminals:

  • Front panel terminals include: Positive output A, Positive output B, Negative output C, common return, and chassis ground.

Grounding:

  • Either side of any output may be grounded, or the outputs can be used in a floating condition.

Warm-up:

  • No warm-up time is necessary for operation, but a 30-minute warm-up period is recommended to reach rated stability.

Precautionary Measures:

  • Wire Size: Proper wire size for AC input lines is crucial for regulation and ripple. The maximum AC impedance from the breaker box to the power supply input should not exceed 0.75 ohms.
  • Voltage Regulator and Inverter Inputs: Do not use voltage regulators or inverters as a primary power source, as non-sinusoidal AC outputs can cause serious loss of regulation.
  • Systems Considerations: For systems applications, separate power lines to the AC distribution box are recommended to minimize cross-coupling. AC input cables should not be run close to output load cables to minimize AC ripple.

Maintenance Features

Receiving Inspection:

  • Each instrument is carefully inspected and in perfect working order upon shipment. It should be checked immediately upon receipt. Any damage or failure to operate requires an immediate claim with the transportation company.

Repairs:

  • For service, contact the nearest SYSTRON-DONNER representative. They will provide service or arrange for factory return.
  • Always specify both the model and serial number for warranty claims or repair inquiries.

Troubleshooting Guide:

  • A detailed troubleshooting guide is provided, including possible problem areas, symptoms, and recommended checks for 0 to +32V Output, 0 to -32V Output, and 0 to +8V Output.
  • It advises checking voltages across circuit components with a 20,000 ohms per volt voltmeter or oscilloscope.
  • For intermittent issues like poor regulation or ripple, an oscilloscope is necessary to determine dynamic changes.

Calibration Procedure:

  • A step-by-step calibration procedure is outlined for maximum voltage, maximum current, and meter circuit adjustments.
  • Required test equipment includes an Oscilloscope (Tektronix Type 561), Differential Amplifier Plug In (Tektronix Type 63), Time Base Plug In (Tektronix Type 67), Differential VTVM (Fluke Model 825A), and DC Ammeter (Weston Model 901).
  • Internal control settings are factory preset but can be adjusted if necessary due to component aging or replacement.

Component Quality:

  • All components are of the highest quality, subjected to 100% incoming inspection.
  • Electrolytic filter capacitors are computer-grade with a life expectancy exceeding ten years.
  • Silicon transistors are "derated" and temperature-aged for high reliability.
  • Rectifiers are hermetically sealed silicon units, and zener diodes are temperature-stabilized.
