1. Introduction
SDC-30 controllers use the open source Sedona framework. The SDC controllers are programmed either
with the dedicated Sedona Workbench or with AX Workbench. The Sedona Workbench is a dedicated
programming tool for Sedona products.
The AX Workbench is a much wider tool used with Niagara Framework products e.g. JACE, Hawk and
TONN. The SDC-30 controllers can be programmed using AX Workbench range products, allowing the
existing AX Workbench users easily integrate the SDC controller programming into the AX Workbench
Suite.
In this application note both stand-alone Sedona Workbench as well as Niagara AX workbench installation is
reviewed.
2. Sedona Workbench Installation
Sedona Workbench is the dedicated tool for programming SDC-30 controllers and SDC-TS touchscreen
devices.
The Sedona workbench is available for downloaded from SyxthSense web-site, or supplied on the Sedona
Workbench CD.
To download from SyxthSense web-site, go to the Support Forum:-
http://www.syxthsense.com/support1.php

Overview

The provided document, "SDC Sedona Application Note 001 Sedona/AX Workbench Installation," details the installation and licensing procedures for two software tools used to program SDC-30 controllers: the dedicated Sedona Workbench and the more general Niagara AX Workbench.

Function Description:

The SDC-30 controllers utilize the open-source Sedona framework for their operation. These controllers can be programmed using either the Sedona Workbench or the AX Workbench.

  • Sedona Workbench: This is a specialized programming tool specifically designed for Sedona products, including SDC-30 controllers and SDC-TS touchscreen devices. It provides a dedicated environment for developing and deploying applications on these devices.
  • AX Workbench: This is a broader tool within the Niagara Framework ecosystem, commonly used with various Niagara products like JACE, Hawk, and TONN. Its compatibility with SDC-30 controllers allows existing AX Workbench users to seamlessly integrate SDC controller programming into their existing AX Workbench Suite, minimizing the learning curve and consolidating their toolset.

The document outlines the installation process for both standalone Sedona Workbench and its integration into Niagara AX Workbench, catering to different versions of AX Workbench (3.4.xx, 3.5.xx, and 3.6.xx or later).

Important Technical Specifications & Usage Features:

Sedona Workbench Installation:

  1. Software Acquisition: The Sedona Workbench can be downloaded from the SyxthSense support forum or obtained via a Sedona Workbench CD. Access to the support forum requires registration and elevation to Partner level, which can be requested by contacting support@syxthsense.com.
  2. Download and Unzip: Users need to locate and download the "Sedona Workbench Bundle" zip-file from the "SDC Sedona Controller Range" and "Software" sections of the support menu. After downloading, the file should be unzipped, creating a "SDC Customer CD" folder.
  3. Setup Execution: Within the "SDC Customer CD" folder, users navigate to the "Sedona Workbench v1.0.47 Software" subfolder and run setup.exe.
  4. Windows 7 Specifics: For Windows 7 users, it is crucial to run setup.exe as "Run As Administrator" to ensure proper installation. This is achieved by right-clicking setup.exe and selecting the "Run As Administrator" option.
  5. Desktop Icon: Upon successful installation, a "Workbench" icon will appear on the desktop, allowing users to launch the Sedona Workbench software.
  6. Administrative Privileges for Operation (Windows 7): Even after installation, Windows 7 users must run the Sedona Workbench as an administrator. Failure to do so will result in the Host ID changing every time the software is run, which will prevent the software licensing from working correctly. To configure this, users need to locate the executable wb_w.exe (typically found in ./Sedona/SedonaWorkbench-1.0.47/bin/wb_w.exe), right-click it, select "properties," and tick the "Run As Administrator" box.
  7. Licensing:
    • Demo Mode: Upon initial execution of wb_w.exe, the software automatically connects to the Niagara Central licensing server. The Sedona Workbench operates in a 30-day demo mode before ceasing to function.
    • Temporary License: To run the software in an initial full demo mode, users can register on the Niagara Central website. The website will automatically send a temporary license file, which needs to be installed according to the email instructions.
    • Full License: For full software licensing, users must send their "Host ID" to support@syxthsense.com. SyxthSense will then register the software and send back a license file, which needs to be installed in the ./Sedona/SedonaWorkbench-1.0.47/licenses folder.
    • Persistent Licensing: After the license file is installed, the software will connect to the Niagara Central licensing service upon subsequent runs, becoming permanently licensed and enabling controller programming.

AX Workbench Installation (Sedona Integration):

The integration of Sedona functionality into AX Workbench depends on the specific AX Workbench version.

  • AX Workbench Versions 3.4.xx or 3.5.xx:

    1. Sedona Image Files: Users need to download the "Sedona_Folder_For_AX3.4and3.5.zip" file from the SyxthSense support section under "SDC Sedona Controller Range" and "Software." This file is referred to as "AX Workbench Sedona Upgrade Files."
    2. Copying Files: After downloading, the contents of the Sedona folder from the image pack must be copied into the 'Sedona' folder within the NiagaraAX installation directory (e.g., C:\Niagara\Niagara-3.4.xx\sedona or C:\Niagara\Niagara-3.5.xx\sedona). This effectively integrates the Sedona software (version 1.0.xx) into the AX Workbench.
  • AX Workbench Versions 3.6.xx or later:

    1. License Feature Requirement: For Sedona to work with AX Workbench versions 3.6.xxx or later, the Sedona feature must be explicitly licensed in the AX Workbench license file. Users can verify this by opening their existing license file with WorkPad and searching for "Sedona license line."
    2. Options if Sedona License is Missing:
      • Request License Feature: Users can request the Sedona license feature from their AX Workbench Supplier.
      • Use Older AX Workbench Versions: Alternatively, users can opt to use AX Workbench versions 3.4.xx or 3.5.xx, following the installation procedure outlined above.
      • Install Sedona Workbench Separately: Users can install the dedicated Sedona Workbench tool for programming SDC controllers. In this scenario, the existing AX Workbench license can be copied to the Sedona license folder (e.g., Niagara/Niagara3.6.xx/license/) after the Sedona Workbench runs for the first time. It is crucial not to attempt to license the Sedona Workbench through Niagara Central if an AX Workbench license for 3.6.xx already exists, as a license can only apply to one Host ID at a time.
    3. Installation Steps (with Sedona license feature):
      • Obtain and Install Framework: Users need to obtain and install the Sedona_Framework_TXS-1.1.xx using the "Tools...Sedona Installer tool" from the SyxthSense website.
      • Obtain and Add TEU Sedona License Feature: Users must obtain and add the license feature set for TEU Sedona (TEU-SED).
      • Copy Image Pack: The files and folders from the support image pack need to be copied into the 'Sedona' folder within the AX Workbench installation directory (e.g., C:\Niagara\Niagara-3.6.xx\sedonaBundles\Sedona_Framework_TXS-1.1.xx\sedona). This integrates the Sedona software, which is considered an optional feature in these versions.

Maintenance Features:

The document primarily focuses on installation and initial licensing, with limited explicit mentions of ongoing maintenance features. However, the licensing process itself implies a form of maintenance:

  • License Management: The requirement to send a Host ID for full licensing and the installation of license files are critical for maintaining software functionality.
  • Administrator Privileges: The repeated emphasis on running the Sedona Workbench as an administrator on Windows 7 highlights a necessary "maintenance" step to ensure consistent Host ID recognition and prevent licensing issues. Failure to do so would necessitate re-licensing or troubleshooting.
  • Software Updates (Implied): While not explicitly detailed, the mention of specific software versions (e.g., Sedona Workbench v1.0.47, Sedona software 1.0.xx, Sedona_Framework_TXS-1.1.xx) and different AX Workbench versions suggests that updates and compatibility management are part of the ongoing maintenance of the programming environment. Users would need to ensure they are using compatible versions of the Sedona framework and AX Workbench for optimal performance and to access the latest features.
  • Support Forum: The availability of a support forum and the contact email (support@syxthsense.com) serve as crucial maintenance resources for troubleshooting, obtaining updates, and resolving licensing or installation issues.
