Overview

The TAG Heuer Calibre HEUER 01 Chronograph is a sophisticated self-winding automatic timepiece designed for precision timekeeping and robust performance, embodying TAG Heuer's long-standing commitment to technical innovation and endurance in Swiss watchmaking. This watch combines traditional craftsmanship with modern design, making it a high-performance sports watch suitable for various rigorous conditions.

Function Description

The watch features a comprehensive display for both standard timekeeping and chronograph functions. For timekeeping, it indicates the hour, minute, and second, along with a date display. The chronograph functions include a 60-second counter, a 30-minute counter, and a 12-hour counter, allowing for precise measurement of elapsed time. The chronograph is operated via a start/stop button and a zero reset button.

The self-winding automatic movement is powered by the natural motion of the wearer's wrist, which activates a rotor to wind the mainspring. When fully wound, the watch has a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. This ensures continuous operation even when not worn for a short period.

The tachymeter scale, a notable feature, allows the wearer to measure average speed over a fixed distance, typically 1 kilometer or 1 mile. To use this, the chronograph is started at the beginning of the measured distance and stopped when the distance is covered. The seconds hand then points to a number on the tachymeter scale, indicating the average speed in km/h or mph. This function is particularly useful for sports and racing enthusiasts.

Usage Features

Setting the time and date is straightforward. The crown has three positions:

  • Position 1 (Normal position and manual winding): In this position, the watch can be manually wound by turning the crown clockwise. This is useful for starting the watch after it has stopped due to a depleted power reserve.
  • Position 2 (Rapid date correction): Pulling the crown out to this position allows for quick adjustment of the date by turning the crown clockwise until the desired date is displayed. A crucial warning is provided: the date should not be changed between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. to prevent damage to the calendar mechanism.
  • Position 3 (Time correction): Further pulling the crown to this position enables the adjustment of the time by turning the crown in the desired direction.

After any adjustment, it is essential to push the crown back into position 1 to ensure the watch maintains its water-resistance.

The chronograph offers two main timing modes:

  • Single Timing: To measure a single event, first ensure the chronograph hands are at zero by pressing the zero reset button (B). Then, press the start/stop button (A) to start the timing and press it again to stop. The elapsed time can then be read. To reset the hands to zero, press button (B).
  • Cumulative Timing: This function allows for measuring several consecutive times, adding them together to get a total measured time. Similar to single timing, the hands must be at zero before starting. The start/stop button (A) is used to start and stop each interval. For example, to measure two consecutive times, start the first time with (A), stop it with (A) to read the first time, then start the second time with (A), and stop it with (A) to read the second time. The process can be repeated for additional intervals. After all measurements, the hands are reset to zero using button (B).

Maintenance Features

To ensure the reliability and preserve the appearance of the TAG Heuer watch over time, several maintenance guidelines are recommended:

  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning with fresh water and soap is advised, especially after exposure to salt water. For frequent or prolonged water use, a steel and/or gold bracelet is recommended due to its durability.
  • Condensation: In cases of sudden temperature changes, slight condensation may appear under the crystal. This is usually temporary and should disappear on its own without affecting the watch's function. If condensation persists, it is recommended to consult an official TAG Heuer dealer.
  • Pressure Seals: Over time, the pressure seals that ensure water-resistance can deteriorate. It is recommended to have the water-resistance checked annually by a TAG Heuer dealer, who can replace the seals if necessary.
  • Crystals: Some watch crystals feature anti-reflective treatment to enhance readability. While effective, this coating can show marks from wear and tear, which are considered normal and not covered by the warranty. Under normal use, the coating performs satisfactorily.
  • Automatic Movement: To maintain the precision of the automatic movement, TAG Heuer Service Centers recommend a service every 4 to 6 years. This interval can vary based on how the watch is used.
  • Gold Plating: Components with galvanic gold plating are sensitive to friction on hard, rough surfaces, which can cause the thin layer of gold to wear out over time. Under normal conditions, the plating should meet expectations.
  • Titanium Carbide Coating: Watches with titanium carbide coating, applied by spraying, are also sensitive to friction. Impacts or mishandling can alter this thin layer, and such alterations are not covered by the international warranty. The coating is designed to satisfy requirements under normal use.
  • Bracelets/Leather Straps: Leather straps, particularly those made from crocodile leather, are treated for humidity resistance. While crocodile leather is certified from farmed animals, it is a natural material, and its use in water should be limited. To maintain leather straps, cleaning with a soft, dry cotton cloth is recommended, avoiding abrasive products. It is normal for leather to darken slightly over time. Rubber straps should be washed regularly with soap and water, especially on the inner surface, for comfort. Metal bracelets should be cleaned with soap and water once a month. To prevent accidental opening, steel and/or gold bracelets are fitted with a double security or button clasp.

The watch is designed with water-resistance up to 100 meters, and features luminescent hands for visibility in low light conditions, a leather strap or steel bracelet with a folding buckle and security push buttons, and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal for durability and clarity.

TAG Heuer provides spare parts for a period of 10 years from the date of purchase. The manual also emphasizes that inappropriate use or handling, such as not properly securing the crown after adjustments, can invalidate the guarantee.
