Overview

The Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model: B028) is a versatile zoom lens designed for Nikon and Canon cameras, offering an exceptionally broad focal length range from wide-angle to super-telephoto. This lens is part of Tamron's Di II series, indicating it's optimized for use with APS-C format DSLR cameras. The "VC" in its name signifies Vibration Compensation, Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system, while "HLD" refers to the High/Low torque-modulated Drive, a new autofocus motor technology.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD is to provide photographers with a single, all-in-one lens solution that covers an immense range of photographic scenarios without the need to switch lenses. Its 18mm wide-angle end is suitable for landscapes, architecture, and group shots, while the 400mm telephoto end excels in wildlife, sports, and distant subjects. The lens features an internal focusing (IF) system, which means the overall length of the lens does not change during focusing, contributing to better balance and handling. The VC mechanism helps to reduce image blur caused by camera shake, particularly beneficial at longer focal lengths or in low-light conditions, allowing for sharper handheld shots. The HLD autofocus motor is designed for precise and quiet operation, making it suitable for both still photography and video recording.

Usage Features:

  1. Attaching and Removing the Lens: To attach, align the lens attachment mark (11) with the camera's mounting mark and rotate until it clicks and locks (clockwise for Canon, counterclockwise for Nikon). To remove, press the camera's lens release button and rotate the lens in the opposite direction. Always turn off the camera power before attaching or removing the lens. For Canon cameras, align with the EF lens mark (red circle).

  2. Switching Focus Mode (AF/MF): The AF/MF switch (13) allows selection between autofocus (AF) and manual focus (MF). In AF mode, the lens will automatically focus. In MF mode, the focus ring (9) is used to manually adjust focus. It's crucial not to force the focus ring in AF mode to prevent damage.

  3. Vibration Compensation (VC): The VC switch (12) activates or deactivates the image stabilization system. When set to ON, the VC mechanism helps reduce blur from camera shake. Pressing the shutter button halfway stabilizes the viewfinder image. VC is particularly effective in dimly lit locations, where flash photography is prohibited, or on unstable footing. However, it should be turned OFF when shooting from a tripod or during bulb photography (long exposures) to avoid malfunctions. The viewfinder image may appear blurred momentarily after pressing the shutter button halfway, which is normal for the VC system.

  4. Zooming: The zooming ring (6) is rotated to adjust the focal length from 18mm to 400mm, allowing for flexible framing.

  5. Zoom Lock Mechanism: The zoom lock switch (10) allows the zoom ring to be locked at the 18mm position to prevent zoom creep during transport. To engage, align 18mm on the focal length scale (7) with the focal length mark (8) and push the switch to the LOCK position. To release, push the switch toward the camera.

  6. Lens Hood: A bayonet-type lens hood (HB028) is included to minimize stray light and protect the front element. To attach, align the hood attaching alignment mark (2) with the hood release mark (5) on the lens, then rotate until the hood locking mark (3) meets the hood release mark (5). The hood can be stowed in reverse by attaching it backward. When using the camera's built-in flash, the hood should be removed to prevent vignetting.

  7. Shooting Precautions: The internal focusing system provides a wide shooting range. When using the built-in flash, always remove the lens hood to avoid darkening the image perimeter. For close-up photography, the lens itself might block the flash, causing a dark semicircle. An external flash is recommended in such cases. The lens is not guaranteed for use with mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras.

Maintenance Features:

  1. Cleaning: Dust and dirt on the lens should be removed with a blower or soft brush. Avoid touching the lens surface with fingers. For fingerprints or oil, gently wipe the lens with commercially available lens cleaning paper or a clean, soft cloth (like microfiber) dampened with lens cleaner. Always wipe from the center outwards. Do not use silicone cloth on the lens surface. The lens barrel can be cleaned with a silicone cloth; avoid benzene, thinner, or other organic solvents.

  2. Storage: To prevent mildew, store the lens in a clean, cool, and dry place. If using a lens case, include a commercially available drying agent and replace it periodically.

  3. Contacts: Avoid touching the lens-camera interface contacts (14). Dust or stains on these contacts can lead to communication problems between the lens and camera, potentially causing malfunctions.

  4. Temperature Changes: Sudden temperature changes can cause moisture to form inside the lens and camera, leading to malfunctions. To prevent this, seal the equipment in a plastic bag or similar container until it adjusts to the ambient temperature before use.

  5. Disposal: The CE marking indicates conformity with European Community (EC) directives. The product should not be treated as household waste but collected separately for the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment. Proper disposal helps prevent negative environmental and health consequences.

The Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD is a comprehensive and robust lens designed to offer convenience and versatility to photographers using APS-C DSLRs, enabling them to capture a wide array of subjects with a single lens.
