WARNING
WARNING: Ensure that the door, clamp ring, and
pressure warning lock are fully closed and secured
before attempting to pressurize the vessel.
2.0 O-Rings
There are two O-rings on the D2000 Quick Opening
Closure. The large, cross-sectional diameter O-ring
located on the periphery of the closure’s barrel collar
provides positive sealing and is protected from damage
by tools, pigs, or debris (refer to Figure 3). The second
O-ringon the pressure warning lock screwseals the
pressure warning lock in the bushing (Figure 7).
Consider O-ring material compatibility with pipeline
product; certain chemicals may cause the O-rings to
swell. Swollen O-rings may prevent the clamps from
engaging and properly closing the door. Consult TDW
for proper O-ring selection.
Figure 7. Warning Lock Screw O-Ring
Always clean and coat the O-rings with a thin film of
grease each time the closure is open. Inspect for cuts,
scratches, and deterioration. Replace O-rings if there is
any sign of damage.
3.0 Clamp Ring
WARNING
WARNING: Never force the clamp ring operating
mechanism if the clamp ring does not operate
freely.
The clamp ring (Figure 8) should always operate freely.
Do NOT force the clamp ring operating mechanism or
use a “cheater” pipe on the handle of a lever-operated
clamp ring. Damage to components may result.
Damaged components could prevent the clamp ring
from closing fully.
Figure 8. Clamp Ring Opening
If excessive force has been applied on the clamp ring
operating mechanism, the component attachment
welds should be visually inspected for damage and/or
examined by any common NDT method. Should any
questions or difficulties arise at the time in the use of
the TDW clamp ring closures, please contact TDW
immediately.
4.0 Pressure Warning Lock
The closure contains a pressure warning lock as shown
in Figure 8. In accordance with ASME code, this lock
alerts the operator to pressure in the vessel before the
closure is opened.
Figure 9. Pressure Warning Lock
Ensure the threads are clean and free of defects.
Inspect the O-ring and bushing. Keep the assembly
free of paint. Also, lube the bushing threads
periodically.
CAUTION
CAUTION: Do not overtighten the pressure warning
lock. Doing so may damage the threads and will
make it difficult to remove.
NOTE
: Apply only a thin film of lubricant/grease to
c
losure components. Over-greasing may prevent the
clamps from engaging and properly closing the door.
NOTE: The clamp ring pivot pin should be lubricated at
all points along the pin; not just the front of
the pin.
NOTE
:
Certain pipeline products, such as heavy crude,
may contain excess debris or paraffin. Thoroughly
clean the clamp ring of any excess byproduct to
ensure it closes fully.
NOTE
: Ensure that the pressure warning lock is
secured to the closure via a cable or chain to av
oid
misplacement during operation.

Overview

The D2000 Quick Opening Closure is a device designed for pipeline applications, enabling quick and easy access to the pipeline interior. These closures are engineered for efficient operation by a single person, ensuring both safety and ease of use. Proper operation and maintenance are critical to maintaining the closure's safety features, efficiency, and operational ease.

Function Description

The primary function of the D2000 Quick Opening Closure is to provide a secure, yet easily accessible, seal for pipeline ends. This allows for the insertion or removal of pipeline tools, such as pigs, or for internal inspection and maintenance. The closure utilizes a clamp ring mechanism to secure the door, which, when properly closed, forms a positive seal against the pipeline pressure. A key safety feature is the pressure warning lock, which alerts the operator to residual pressure within the vessel before the closure can be fully opened, preventing accidental depressurization or injury.

Usage Features

The D2000 Quick Opening Closure is designed for straightforward operation. The clamp ring mechanism allows for quick opening and closing, making it suitable for applications requiring frequent access. The design emphasizes ease of use, enabling a single operator to manage the closure. However, it is crucial that the closure is not forced during operation. If the clamp ring operating mechanism does not move freely, it indicates an issue that needs to be addressed, rather than applying excessive force, which could damage components and compromise the closure's integrity.

The closure door face must always be parallel to and concentric with the face of the barrel collar to ensure proper sealing and operation. Any misalignment can lead to operational difficulties and potential safety hazards. For larger sizes (16-inch and up), the door hinge mechanism includes setscrews that allow for adjustment to correct any vertical misalignment of the door, ensuring it remains parallel and concentric with the barrel collar.

A pressure warning lock is integrated into the closure, serving as a critical safety interlock. This lock prevents the closure from being opened if there is still pressure inside the vessel, thereby protecting the operator from potential hazards. The threads of the pressure warning lock must be kept clean and free of defects, and the O-ring and bushing should be regularly inspected. It is also important not to overtighten the pressure warning lock, as this can damage the threads and make removal difficult. To prevent misplacement, the pressure warning lock should be secured to the closure via a cable or chain.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the safe and efficient operation of the D2000 Quick Opening Closure. A dedicated maintenance kit is available, containing grease, penetrant spray, and other tools necessary for the upkeep of the O-rings, clamp ring, and pressure warning lock.

O-Rings: The closure features two O-rings: a large, cross-sectional diameter O-ring on the periphery of the barrel collar for positive sealing, and a smaller O-ring on the pressure warning lock screw. Both O-rings must be kept clean and coated with a thin film of grease each time the closure is opened. Regular inspection for cuts, scratches, deterioration, twisting, or swelling is crucial, and any O-ring showing signs of abnormality should be replaced immediately. Consideration of O-ring material compatibility with the pipeline product is also important, as certain chemicals can cause swelling, potentially preventing the clamps from engaging properly.

Sealing and Mating Surfaces: The O-rings, sealing surfaces, and mating surfaces must be cleaned and coated with a thin film of grease before the closure is closed. This lubrication helps ensure a proper seal and smooth operation. Over-greasing should be avoided, as it can hinder the clamps from engaging correctly.

Clamp Ring: The interior surfaces of the clamp ring should be cleaned and lubricated with a thin film of grease. All hinge points on the clamp ring, including the pivot pin at the bottom, require regular lubrication. The maintenance kit provides ThermaPlex aqua bearing grease, though other suitable greases can be used. It is important to lubricate all points along the pivot pin, not just the front. The clamp ring should always operate freely; if excessive force has been applied to the operating mechanism, the component attachment welds should be visually inspected for damage or examined using common NDT methods. Accumulation of debris or paraffin from pipeline products, especially heavy crude, can impede the clamp ring's operation, necessitating thorough cleaning to ensure full closure.

Door Hinge Bearings (for 16-inch and larger sizes): The door hinge bearings are oil-impregnated, sintered bronze and do not typically require lubrication. However, they should be checked at regular intervals for excessive wear. Lubrication points and adjustment instructions are provided to guide maintenance.

Adherence to these maintenance guidelines is critical to ensure the D2000 Quick Opening Closure continues to operate safely, efficiently, and with ease. Any issues or difficulties encountered during use should prompt immediate contact with TDW for assistance.
