Overview

This document outlines the features, operation, and maintenance of the Technaxx Hand Crank and Solar Radio TX-238, a versatile device designed for emergency and everyday use.

Function Description

The Technaxx TX-238 is a multi-functional radio equipped with both AM and FM bands, allowing users to tune into a wide range of broadcasts. Beyond its primary radio function, it integrates a super bright LED torch, providing illumination in low-light conditions. A key feature is its ability to charge mobile devices via a USB-A output, making it a valuable tool during power outages or in remote areas. The device incorporates multiple power generation methods: a solar panel for charging under sunlight, and a hand crank for manual power generation. For enhanced portability and ease of use, it includes a hand strap. An extendable radio antenna ensures optimal reception across different environments.

Usage Features

Initial Setup and Battery Activation: Before the first use, or if the radio has been unused for more than 60 days, it is crucial to activate the internal battery. This can be done by charging the device with the hand crank for 3-5 minutes or by placing it in direct sunlight for 3-5 minutes. This initial charge ensures the internal battery is properly activated and ready for use.

Radio Operation: To operate the radio, turn the volume control clockwise. This action simultaneously switches on the radio and allows for volume adjustment. Users can select between AM and FM radio bands to access desired stations. For optimal reception, it is recommended to extend the radio antenna fully. Tuning into a station is achieved by rotating the "Tuner" dial. A green light, labeled "TUN," illuminates when a good reception is established, indicating a clear signal.

Flashlight Operation: The integrated LED flashlight is activated or deactivated by pressing a dedicated button located on the top of the unit. This provides a convenient source of light whenever needed.

Power Generation Methods: The TX-238 offers three distinct methods for power generation:

  1. Solar Energy: For solar charging, place the radio in medium sunlight for approximately 10-12 hours. A red "charging light" will indicate when the unit is actively charging. This method is ideal for passive charging over extended periods.

  2. Hand Crank: The hand crank provides an active method of power generation. For general charging, turning the crank handle for approximately 1 minute (at a rate of about 130 revolutions per minute) can provide 15-20 minutes of continuous light from all three LED lamps or 15-20 minutes of radio function at medium volume. If charging a cell phone, this amount of cranking will yield approximately 3-4 minutes of talk time. For initial battery activation or after prolonged disuse (over 60 days), crank the handle for 3-5 minutes in any direction. The red light will be on during cranking, signifying active charging.

  3. USB Port Charging: The device can also be charged via a Micro USB port. Simply insert one end of the charging cable into the Micro USB socket on the radio and the other end into a USB port on a computer or a compatible USB power adapter. A red light will illuminate to indicate that the NI-MH battery is charging.

Charging External Devices: The solar crank radio is capable of charging USB devices, such as mobile phones or MP3 players, using its internal Li-ion battery or by continuous cranking. To charge an external device, plug one end of the charging cable into the radio's USB port and the other end into the device to be charged. It is important to note that this feature is primarily intended for emergency use and should not be considered a replacement for a standard power bank. The supplied charging cable is designed for Micro USB/iPhone devices (with an adapter); for other USB devices, their original charging cables should be used.

Charging and Discharge Indicators: The red charging light turns off once the radio's battery is fully charged. In cases of battery overcharge or a detected short circuit, the USB output will automatically deactivate to protect the device and connected equipment.

Maintenance Features

General Cleaning: To maintain the device, wipe its exterior with a soft, damp cloth. For cleaning the lamp's lens, use a standard lens cleaner or an eyeglass cleaner. It is crucial to avoid using harsh, abrasive, or solvent-based substances for cleaning, as these can damage the device's surfaces.

Water Resistance: The radio is designed with an IPX3 water resistance standard, meaning it is protected against spraying water. However, it is not completely waterproof, and users are explicitly warned NOT to submerge the device in water.

Safety Precautions: Users are advised to keep the device dry at all times and to disconnect it when not in use. The device should not be operated near car heating vents or in direct sunlight. Adequate ventilation is required during operation, so users should ensure that fan or cooling vents are not blocked and the device is not covered. The device is not recommended for use in life support applications where its failure could compromise safety or effectiveness. It should also not be used in the presence of flammable anesthetic mixtures, fumes, or gases. Before connecting a battery charger or adapter, always consult its manual to ensure compatibility with the device's technical specifications. When connecting AC extension cords, use the heaviest practical gauge. Surge protectors, line conditioners, or UPS systems should not be plugged into the device.

Disposal: The packaging materials should be sorted by type for disposal, with cardboard and paperboard going into waste paper and foils into recyclables collection. Old electronic equipment, including this radio, must not be disposed of with household waste in the European Union and other countries with separate collection systems. Consumers are legally required to take old devices to designated collection points in their municipality or district to ensure proper recycling and prevent negative environmental impacts. Electrical devices are marked with a specific symbol to indicate this requirement. Similarly, batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of with household waste. Consumers are legally obligated to dispose of all batteries and rechargeable batteries, including those containing harmful substances like cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), or lead (Pb), at designated collection points or with retailers. This ensures environmentally friendly disposal. The product should be returned to a collection point with the battery fully discharged.
