Overview

The tekmar Snow/Ice Sensor 090/094 and Sensor Socket 091 are components designed for use with tekmar snow/ice melt controls, including types 654, 661, 662, 664, 665, or 667. These devices are intended for installation in snow melt slabs to detect snow and ice conditions, enabling automatic activation of the snow melting system.

Function Description

The Snow/Ice Sensor 090/094 is an in-slab sensor that measures three key parameters: slab temperature, sensor surface temperature, and sensor surface moisture level. This allows for automatic snow/ice detection and slab temperature sensing. The sensor is designed to sit flush with the slab surface after being mounted into the Sensor Socket 091. The socket is installed directly into the snow melt slab, ideally halfway between the heating elements or pipes, to ensure representative readings.

The sensor contains two 10k Ohm thermistors: one for slab surface temperature and one for sensor heater temperature. The sensor also detects surface water. The heating element resistance between the red and black wires should be approximately 50 Ohms. The water detection resistance between blue and black wires should be 2,000,000 Ohms when dry, and between 10,000 and 300,000 Ohms when wet.

Usage Features

  • Automatic Snow/Ice Detection: The sensor continuously monitors slab conditions to automatically detect the presence of snow or ice.
  • Slab Temperature Sensing: Provides accurate temperature readings of the slab surface.
  • Long Wire Included: The 090 model comes with a 65' (20 m) cable, and the 094 model with a 208' (63 m) cable, reducing the need for in-field splicing.
  • Durable Design: Engineered for long life in driveway and walkway installations.
  • Mounting Solution: The Sensor Socket 091 provides a dedicated mounting solution, including a mounting plate, to simplify installation and ensure proper sensor placement.
  • Compatibility: Specifically designed for use with tekmar Snow Melting Controls. Operation with third-party control systems may lead to electrolysis failures not covered by the tekmar Limited Warranty.

Installation Considerations:

  • Sensor Location: The sensor should be placed in a location representative of average slab temperature and moisture conditions, avoiding areas affected by abnormal temperature conditions (e.g., near buildings, hot air exhaust, sunny spots) or areas with poor drainage where standing water could accumulate.
  • Traffic Areas: While placing the sensor in traffic areas can trigger melting due to passing traffic (desirable in commercial settings), it may be preferable to locate it away from traffic in residential installations to reduce fuel consumption.
  • Sloped Surfaces: On sloped driveways, the sensor must be installed near the lowest elevation to ensure proper detection of runoff water.
  • Conduit: The sensor cable should be run in its own conduit, separate from high voltage wiring. The conduit from the sensor to the junction box should be shorter than the supplied cable length. Additional 18 AWG, 5-conductor cable can be spliced at the junction box to extend the total length up to 500' (150m).
  • Drainage: Adequate drainage under the socket is crucial for the sensor's longevity. The mounting plate includes a drainage hole.
  • Concrete/Paver Installation: A plastic plug is provided to prevent concrete from filling the socket during pouring. For brick pavers, surrounding pavers should be mortared to the socket for good thermal conduction.

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Cleaning: The sensor is installed in a harsh environment and can accumulate dirt, salt, and grime, which can inhibit proper water detection. It should be checked and cleaned regularly.
  • Cleaning Procedure: Before cleaning, the control power must be shut off. Use a soft bristle brush and warm soapy water to clean the sensor surface. Avoid using a steel wire brush, as it can damage the sensor. Thoroughly dry the sensor surface with a paper towel before re-powering the control.
  • Salt and Brine Contamination: Exposure to de-icing agents (road salt, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride) can compromise water detection and permanently damage the sensor. It is recommended to locate the sensor away from areas exposed to these agents, such as tire track areas or near curbs where contaminated water may splash.
